I did, years ago. He and I obviously have creative differences. Nobody has been advocating following the books to the letter. It's about taking liberties while still being true to the source material.
No, it isn’t about the length. Thematically, the scouring doesn’t have a place in the movies. The books are about the hobbit’s journey, he movies are ultimately about the destruction of the ring. Once it melted in the fires of mount doom, it was over. Tacking anything else on is wierd, including what Jackson did tack on
I watch Fellowship and TT Extended Edition probably at least once a week. I have a problem that I don’t want fixed
Tolkien was a linguist firstly, and had invented one of the elvish tongues well before the stories of Middle-Earth were conceived. In a lot of ways, he created the stories to give his new language(s) a reason for existence. The other reason was to create a 'British mythology' akin to Norse and Greek mythology. I don't know much about George MacDonald.
LotR has the same problem as HP, they were made in an age where people had convinced themselves that one book=one movie and there was no changing that. They could have Made LOTR a 6 movie masterpiece and it would have been exponentially better than what we got.
And made a fraction of the money because most people who watched LOTR trilogy have never read the books It’s like what my music teacher in HS told me, “were not up here to show off how musically smart we are, we’re up here to please the idiots in the crowd”
Amazon paid $250m for the rights and it has a $1 BILLION WITH A B budget https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/l...v-series-landed-at-amazon-not-netflix-1099213
250 million per season (when adding in the cost of the rights) seems like it will be near impossible for them to even break even on the show.
Might lure people without prime into getting prime. New people to prime discover the 2 day shipping that comes along with their streaming service. New people shop more on amazon than before. Extravagant marketing to increase their market share. Might not break even, but it will bring in a lot of new prime subscribers, which is their ultimate goal.
It took Tolkien several years to write it, though I think it was more due to writers block than craftsmanship.
Awesome. I just finished a re-read of The Silmarillion last week and have been going through withdrawals. That helped.
So explain it to me like I'm 5, should I watch the movies first or could I be completely oblivious to the LOTR franchise going into the TV series and not be lost as to what the fuck is going on?
Yes, it is in the plans regardless, but is it necessary before the TV series? I need to prioritize my viewing agenda this summer.
and if you haven't cared enough to watch the blockbuster movies, why would you care about this much more obscure television show?
it is one of the most famous movie series of all time and shawn is out here in 2018 wondering if he should check them out to be ready to go for an amazon prime series did you just not read at all growing up, shawn? do you have any familiarity with the plot?
My wife claims one of those movies is always on TV. I always make sure to watch when I see it on just to annoy her
Watch the the LOTR trilogy and then the Hobbit films. LOTR movies have extended versions that are like 4+ hours each, and I prefer those, but I think the regular versions are on Netflix.
