If you voted for Trump you were, at the very least, okay with his racist rhetoric. Does that make you yourself a racist? Maybe not, but you can't really fault people for lumping you into that category. I can't hang out at a car dealership then get mad when people think I'm looking to buy a car.
But you get offended when cops make the assumption someone hanging out in a high crime area may be breaking the law.
See, this would work so much better if the assumption would be made for all someones in such areas, but alas, there's that pesky data that refutes such an assertion.
I think it's largely always voting R and the current cultural climate that not only should your party win but if you don't constantly disparage everything about the other side your complicit with their agenda and a traitor the country. There are certainly plenty of racists and xenophobes that flock to Trump but I believe most simply hated Hillary and refuse to vote for Democrats. The actual opinions of the (R) does not matter it says (R) so that's what they're voting. It's amazingly stupid. I had a whole discussion with my mother in law last night about this. She and my FIL voted for Trump. She said over and over that "we're just tired of politicians" blah blah blah. She agreed that Trump is a vile human being and just awful but she thought it was important to send a point. I explained why Trump being elected likely ruined the chance for a decent third party candidate to be elected for at least a decade. However, Trump voters will not admit that just wanting to get a non-politician in was a mistake in this case and don't want to admit they made a horrible decision.
Recently read the book "Republic of Spin: An Inside History of the American Presidency" and it was funny to see how long some ideas have been around. For instance people were saying the above about Calvin Coolidge. Jimmy Carter would show himself picking peanuts to seem like a regular old guy. Etc.
What true intent? Trump got 63 million votes. It's very odd to assume that most of those people voted for him because deep down they don't like minorities. People voted for Trump because: (1) they like that he just says what he thinks! (2) fuck Hillary Clinton (3) he's a great business man (4) it says (R) next to me and not voting for (R) scares me (5) I'm not voting for a Democrat (6) DNC screwed over Bernie (7) he's not a politician (8) he's going to win us some deals (9) don't like minorities. My mother voted for Trump just because she's doesn't like Hillary. You don't have to have a deep down resentment of minorities to vote stupidly. She's admitted it's a dumb reason and regrets her decision.
It's also odd to assume that it's #9 on the list. Not sure if that's what you were going for, but that's how this post comes across. Also, your deep down language lets a lot of people off the hook. Sure, there's a distinction between deep-seated racist thoughts/actions and implicit bias, but unfortunately, the results of both tend to be way too aligned, e.g. Donald Trump as POTUS.
this side steps that the best predictor of voting for trump is racial resentment and sexism, many studies since the election show the same thing
Yes. If you're racist you would likely have voted for Trump. How in the world do you extrapolate that out to it means all or most of 63 million Trump voters are racist? It seems odd to me to hate that a racist like Trump lumps millions of Hispanics together as criminals and rapists yet at the same time believe that 63 million people that voted for Trump must be deep down racists.
it was the single best predictor is my point, so I'm adding context and priority to your list it also shows that if you voted for him you also had to be ok with his racism, it may not have been your #1 priority, but you knew about it and it wasn't a deal breaker
Because they're just vagueries with little to no substance that people throw out to get someone off their back. I won't get into it here but if you dig deeply on those things they can be unraveled to be proven untrue or that Trump is a much worse violator... but none of that matters and most people like that don't know what the truth is nor do they care. It's just putting a veneer on what truly motivates them.
I agree that racists are going to vote for Trump. I also agree that a lot of people probably have deep rooted biases towards certain minorities and likely shapes their world view in some way and are probably more likely to vote for Trump. It still does not mean that all people voting for Trump are racists or have an implicit bias against minorities. People vote for certain candidates for all sorts of reasons.
Speaking in absolutes is dumb, yes. Most people provide the caveat that they were either racist, had implicit bias, or were tacitly supportive of having an outed racist as the leader of our country. You're driving at possible reasoning behind the third pool of Trump voters, but that doesn't change the fact that in making such a decision, they valued other things ("that bitch" etc.) above keeping an outed racist out of the Oval.
I completely agree. Trump voters agreed with what he stands for or just completely ignored it. Either way they are complicit in some manner for what happens to minorities.
Record low unemployment for minorities. MAGA. Can we please go back to celebrating shot in the face day?
Phony numbers. The real unemployment is around 40%. Believe me. Phony numbers given to make politicians look good.
Yet another conversation where people play the "I'm not a racist card", then turn around and bleed subtle resentment towards minorities. Just so curious more southern posters are afflicted by a predilection towards racism so subtle, they actually think they accept diversity.
19 times Trump called jobs numbers ‘fake’ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ey-made-him-look-good/?utm_term=.ad1e4f559899
Good for him. Ill call bullshit on him too. You idiots actually believe 4/10 blacks are unemployed. Fucking laughable.
