Piggy backing of this. Tom might not even be her real father so it make sense. Remember the grandparents questioning paternity. Also I think she was brainwashed as well when that guy said she believed she was a princess and the pink walled room.

That or maybe she thinks (or misremembers) the guy on the screen is the uncle, since I think it is strongly hinting that the uncle (and perhaps the mom somewhat unknowingly) was heavily involved in her disappearance. Her dad’s appearance has changed and I think he looks more like the uncle during the time of the call. I took it as a case of mistaken identity/misremembering on behalf of the girl, but my impression certainly could be wrong.

Or that the girl was aware that Tom Pursell was not her father (but Tom wasn’t aware, or chose not to believe) and she was referring to the “uncle” as her father. I felt the fact that the uncle was screwing Mrs Purcell and may bs Julie’s true father was heavily hunted by the relatives at the funeral (unreal this was not followed up on). Honestly feel like this scenario is more likely.

Or...the father she knew was a drunk, non-caring, shell of who he is now, so he doesn’t look or act like the dad she knew when she was a kid.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I think this is a rather boring season. The acting is convincing, the dialogue is solid, and the promise of season 1 gives me hope; however, if season 1 never existed, I'd have little desire to continue. At the least, I wouldn't feel compelled to watch new episodes as they're released. This is like a 90-minute movie needlessly stretched to 8 hours.

Perhaps this season would be less boring if it weren't in so many ways a mirror of season one.

    Dead child? Check.
    Posed in death scene? Check.
    With stick figures? Check.
In the deep, rural South? Check.
    Possible church involvement? Check.
Possible involvement of state politician? Check.
    Detective duo? Check.
One detective stoic and aloof? Check.
Other detective more laid back and humorous? Check.
One detective with rocky marriage? Check.
    Detective duo that separates? Check.
One detective with a drinking problem? Check.
Detective duo that gets back together to investigate, despite one being hesitant? Check.

Now perhaps what will ultimately make the third season great (or at least much better than the second) is that the payoff will be starkly dissimilar to the first season despite the buildup being pretty much the same -- and in doing so, it will make you question everything about the buildup. Otherwise, it will just look like Pizzolatto has chosen the tried, true, and easy way out from season two's letdown by rehashing tropes from the first season.

And, listen, I'm far from the only who has said that not much has happened in some of these episodes. The first five episodes could have easily been pared down to three. Nothing wrong with a season being six episodes long. The first season was awesome because it spent a lot of time creating mood. But with the third season being so much the same, the pace is tedious.

That was kind of the point. That's why he picked up on it finally. At the time they weren't thinking conspiracy because the investigation had more to do with the firefight, but eventually we know the cop who appears to plant it disappears.

I think it’s Kindt? The message about the father on TV is relating to Kindt, not Tom Purcell. Also, Will died from trying to save his sister? It was an accident so they did the whole religious hands thing. In short, I don’t fucking know

Yeah I don't have any idea how the religious thing gets involved...seems like we've gotten very little info around that part of Will's death.

Still think the sign changer dude is gonna end up getting involved somehow...that's my tinfoil hat theory

I think the mom may have been involved with giving Julie away. When Will died by accident, she was involved with placing him in that position. it’s been speculated that whomever crossed his hands both knew the church picture and had affection for him. They never really said where she was that night, only that she was out entitled to a life or something. She also said she has the soul of a whore and that she made some serious mistakes during her conversation with Amelia. Perhaps she agreed give Julie away in return for money from the rich chicken dude. Not sure about church dolls but maybe they are just left behind for misdirection.

It’s great. Acting is on another level and the story is pretty intriguing even though it may be going a tad slow. The show I think is more focused on the relationships of people that surround the investigation than its getting credit for and that works just fine for me

One detail that I thought was dumb was Woodard's posthumous conviction. While there have been some notable examples historically, that just isn't done in modern times (and I consider 1980 to be modern). It's a huge waste of resources that serves no purpose (and is probably incompatible with our ideas of justice and due process - I mean, how can a dead man hire an attorney? Participate or testify in his own defense?).

It's an annoying detail that has been grating at me.

Also, Woodard was estranged from his kids, but now all of a sudden they know for a fact that he had nothing to do with the Purcell kids murder/kidnapping? Even though he also slaughtered a bunch of rednecks and cops, and they seem to accept that he was capable of that? Doesn't seem right to me. If they know something that exonerates Woodard, have they told the detectives? We haven't been shown anything like that.

So... no, it's not perfect, but I still think it's an excellent show and I love it almost as much as Season 1.

I'm in till the end with this show, but I agree with you. There are a lot of scenes, particularly in the most recent episode (I'm thinking of the two 1990 interviews they did with the kids, one who knew Julie recently and the other with the teens who were originally suspects) that are well-written, well-acted and entertaining to watch but ultimately have no impact on the larger plot. They're just filler.

IMO, True Detective has always been easiest to understand when viewed like it was a band. The debut album was a smash hit because the band spent their entire lives writing it. The record label wants to capitalize on that success, so the band rushes out the follow-up and in the process can't decide whether to repeat the formula of the debut or break away and do something different -- so they end up getting caught between the two. (This is understandable, IMO.) The third album goes back to the basic, tried-and-true formula where the songs are simultaneously different and the same.

It is what it is, and I think the true test of Pizzolatto's talent as a story-teller will come in Season 4, assuming there is one.
