Apparently not. This was trending on twitter yesterday, which I assume is where the initial post came from.
The year 1816 did not have a summer in the northern hemisphere because of a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer
i wish that would happen again. imagine football saturdays in september not being a billion degrees and feeling like fall (this doesnt apply to you because even in a nuclear winter columbia would still be a million degrees in september)
Reminds me of when I found out Dolph Lundgren was a genius: After graduating from high school with straight A's, he spent some time in the United States in the 1970s on various academic scholarships, studying chemical engineering at Washington State University and Clemson University. He studied chemical engineering for a year at Washington State University. In the late 1970s, he enrolled at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. In 1982, Lundgren graduated with a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney. Lundgren was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983. He would later quit studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after two weeks to pursue acting.
The weather was not in itself a hardship for those accustomed to long winters. The real problem lay in the weather's effect on crops and thus on the supply of food and firewood. Cloud of fog and lessened sunlight obliterated crops and such. The shortages of feeding fatass americans and the amount of livestock we eat would be outrageous. Food prices would be astronomical
TIL that the phrase 'humble pie" comes from the Medieval Ages where the lower the ranks in the household, the worse choice of cuts you got to eat from the animal. The lowest servants got the innards of the animal that were barely edible on their own so they were cooked up into pies
In July and August, lake and river ice was observed as far south as northwestern Pennsylvania. Frost was reported as far south as Virginia on August 20 and 21.[13] Rapid, dramatic temperature swings were common, with temperatures sometimes reverting from normal or above-normal summer temperatures as high as 95 °F (35 °C) to near-freezing within hours
The wildest part about this is that even though 200 years ago isn't ancient, I'm sure 99.9% of people had no clue what was going on and probably assumed it was the end of days or God was punishing them or something.
1. In Nigeria, the trunk of a car is called the boot 2. Mt Everest isnt the tallest mountain in the world. It's the highest above sea level. The tallest mountain in the world is in Hawaii that starts on the sea floor and rises above into an island
This is dumb. The entire planet is a rock, if you’re going to count the below sea level rock height of one mountain, why wouldn’t you count the other? Why isn’t the rock underpinning Everest and below sea level considered part of its height at that point?
That is included in its height already. You want to discount the rock below Everest that is below sea level for some reason.
Mountains are measured from the base. The hawaii mountain's base starts at the sea floor. Everest's base starts wherever it does on a land mass. Feel like youre over thinking this one.
Mountains’ heights are measured from sea level. What is the base of Everest? Is it floating on air at sea level!
You're wrong stop being wrong. https://www.businessinsider.com/earths-tallest-mountain-is-hawaii-2015-6
If you grant Everest the same luxury, its base extends below sea level as well. Do we think that the Himalayas don’t lie on top of rocky support that contributes to the elevation at the top of Everest?
The tallest mountain from base to peak is Mauna Kea. That's not debatable. The tallest mountain above sea level is Everest. Also not debatable. The furthest point from the center of the earth is Mount Chimborazo. Facts are what these things are. https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/highestpoint.html
The last two are facts. The first is not. It requires an arbitrary designation of “dry prominence” that isn’t anything more than an arbitrary decision and cuts off calculation of Everest’s height at sea level. Because ...
There isn't any ocean underneath so you're proposing having it go to the center of the earth or what here facts
To its base. Which for all mountains on earth would probably be the lowest point on the earth’s crust, since all elevation rises from there.
Methinks AlternativeFactsRule climbed Everest and doesn't want to give up his claim to climbing the tallest mountain.
All this debate about Everest and no correction on the boot. That should be attributed to Great Britain. Rule Britannia!
I humbly submit the following as the official theme song of the thread. Feel free to post this as an introduction to whatever it is you learned.
7 of the 8 planets were discovered before humans knew Antarctica existed. And the 8th planet was discovered just 30 years after we discovered Antartica
Watching cbb this weekend and started googling facts on Wikipedia. Noticed that Cincinnati (2) has more national championships than Ohio State (1). I was like man, I bet that makes for some discussion in the Buckeye state. Then I noticed that Cincinnati's 2 came right after Ohio State's 1, and they beat them for it. And both had a couple runner ups in there as well. This was all in the 60s Historian herb.burdette, do you have anything to add to this cbb history lesson?
