I think they could have massaged the Rose character's story in this a little better by having her still recovering from her injuries from the end of TLJ instead of saying "Leia wants me here" and benching her that way. That probably would have been the nicer way to do it.
Canto Bight thematically was good but there had to be a more tonally consistent and not like blaring B plot to deal with it, which B plots don't often work to begin with except in sitcoms and series let alone a movie.
It felt like the side stories about Jack Bauer's daughter in 24 in the early seasons that served only to give a character something to do while the real action was happening elsewhere, even though that something ultimately led nowhere and only served to make things worse for the main characters in the end.
I sat these last three days being like you fools are making shit up finding reason to be upset. I was the fool lol
I liked TLJ but a big criticism of it is that Canto Bight was completely unnecessary and could’ve been better served elsewhere
Because in the grand scheme of things, all she did was stop Finn from sacrificing his life at the end of TLJ
I was cool with Canto Bight. I think it served a purpose of simultaneously creating a rebellion fighter out of Finn and adding a feeling of desperation to the situation at hand. That being said, TROS basically nullified TLJ a whole so it’s whatever
I don’t hate Rose, she was ok, but I thought too much of the story was devoted to her backstory, and we still barely knew who Finn and Poe were.
I don’t disagree. I, personally, just don’t see what she truly added to the story in the grand scheme of things.
I just thin after TFA all the major players were kinda scattered. Finn needed to be solidified imo and Rose was a catalyst for that. I have MUCH bigger issues with Poe’s arc in TLJ than I did with the Rose/Finn story
I'm indifferent on Rose but thought it was bullshit that JJ gave the actress the Jar Jar treatment after all the nonsense she dealt with on social media after TLJ came out.
1. She’s mostly just a love interest in a B plot who is not traditionally pretty so people either want her to have a bigger role or want someone nicer to look at so they’re mad on both sides 2. She had the worst most contrived piece of dialogue in the movie that had no subtlety whatsoever when she saves Finn
While I agree, not sure what you do with her. It's already a very busy movie. Not much time to cram anything else in.
Much as I loved Poe's arc in TLJ, I'll say that I would have liked it better had he and Finn been sent on a mission instead of splitting them up. Even if you do the same thing in TLJ but switch out Rose (don't create that character at all) for Poe, I think a lot of the complaints diminish. There would be a butterfly effect to such a change but all for the better I think. I really like Finn's arc in the movie, how he goes from caring only for Rey to being a genuine do or die Resistance warrior, how he sees what being a "just in it for me" attitude leads to (DJ) and deciding to be better. All that is great. Rose was unnecessary other than to give Finn someone to bounce off of
Is Rose supposed to be Chinese? There is about an 85% chance of this comment being stupid but including Chinese hero characters in massive movies is a cynical thing some movie studios do. The second Pacific Rim movie definitely did this. And yes I realize China does not exist in a Galaxy far, far away
no idea but the actress’ last name is Tran and I’m pretty sure that’s Vietnamese for whatever it’s worth.
This seems strange to me considering how well big action movies do over there. Admittedly I know very little about how the Chinese movie market works. I was just spitballing about how someone who was a main character in the second film was basically thrown away here
-I want to know where Luke's green saber was. I thought for sure that Ben was going to get it somehow after he turned back to the light and chunked his red saber into the water. I get them not featuring it in TLJ because of the decisions made with Luke's character. But since that was pretty much whitewashed in this movie I thought we'd get to see it present day (not just in a flashback). -Also wanted the backstory from TFA of how Anakin's saber was found. "A good story for another time". Well...no more movies so I guess we'll never know. -I winced and smiled at the same time at Luke's "a Jedi's weapon deserves more respect" and "I was wrong/scared". I was like dang, so much for TLJ. I personally hated what they did with Luke in TLJ but at the same time was surpised at how overt it was in TROS. -Two legit WTF moments for me: 1) Rey using lightning 2) Han showing up -Holy crap at the first fifteen minutes or so. I couldn't catch my breath. -With Palpatine being my favorite character, I was kind of disappointed in how he went out. I was really hoping Anakin would come back in some way. At least appear as a ghost and assist. I feel like they totally did away with his redemption in ROTJ. -I thought it was nice seeing Luke training Leia.
Tran definitely is. I have second-generation Chinese friends who said their parents told them to never trust Vietnamese people. So big here as necessary
We talking bout dialogue? I’ve long come to accept that Star Wars strength isn’t in its dialogue. I can’t watch TFA because I cringe
I would say that JJ wasn’t being petty making this movie but when you take into account the helmet, the benching of Rose, the retconning of Rey’s background, the jab at the lightsaber toss, bringing back weird dismembered Snoke clones, having to send Lando and Chewy to recruit when Luke was billed as “the spark” to relight the resistance at the end of TLJ, etc. it’s really hard to say there wasn’t some pettiness to it
Casual fan here who just saw the movie this afternoon and caught up on the thread. Wanted to throw in my two cents and say this was my favorite of the three movies. Was interesting to get everyone’s takes. I went in thinking it’d suck but was pleasantly surprised.
Outside of the last episode I think the mandalorian has been mostly awful but as long as that Baby Yoda got dem little cute ass eyes and dem cute ass ears and dem little cute ass force chokes I’m never gonna be 10 minutes late for that shit
I've never really understood this criticism of TLJ. JJ put him on that island isolated from everyone else for years. What exactly was supposed to happen in TLJ if not expand upon that. When JJ put that in and didn’t deliver it, I don’t think he knew what the story was and was leaving that for Rian or Colin because he wasn’t slated to do IX at the time
i had no idea that star wars fan thought luke was like Rambo I thought his TLJ evolution, acknowledging the huge passing of time and just knowing shit happens, was completely in keeping with the original trilogy character.
I think part of it was that he was essentially the McGuffin of TFA for the most part I really dug what RJ did with him in TLJ but I can understand it rubbing people the wrong way
