McKinsey predicts near doubling of unemployment in Europe Spoiler Unemployment in Europe could nearly double in the coming months, with up to 59 million jobs at risk from permanent cutbacks as well as reductions in pay and hours because of the coronavirus pandemic, estimates from consultancy McKinsey said. The consulting firm estimated unemployment levels in the 27-member state bloc peaking at 7.6% in 2020 and a return to pre-crisis levels in Q4 2021. But in a worst-case scenario, unemployment could peak in 2021 at 11.2%, with a recovery to 2019 levels by 2024. Euro zone unemployment fell to a 12-year low in February, the month before coronavirus containment measures began to be introduced widely across Europe. The jobless rate was 7.3% in the 19 countries sharing the euro zone, the lowest level since March 2008. McKinsey said that the levels of impact would vary between demographic groups and industry sectors. "Losing those jobs would not only be a tragedy on an individual level, but would also be very painful from an economic perspective," McKinsey said in its report. The study highlighted a close link between level of education and the short-term risk for jobs, "potentially exacerbating existing social inequalities." Half of all jobs at risk are in customer service and sales, food service and builder occupations. In Europe's wholesale and retail sector, 14.6 millions jobs could be threatened, 8.4 million jobs in accommodation and food and 1.7 million in arts and entertainment. The European Commission, the bloc's executive, proposed earlier this month a wage-subsidy scheme to encourage employers to cut workers’ hours rather than their jobs, a plan that could be worth 100 billion euros ($108.76 billion) in borrowing guaranteed by all EU countries. The Commission expects the EU to go into a deep recession this year because of the coronavirus outbreak, which has slowed economic activity to a crawl across the 27 members states.

Are those pm2.5 filters any good if they’re put in a cloth mask with a filter pocket? Or just a glorified coffee filter situation?
I wear glasses and feel it's a weak barrier but doesn't hurt. Further, I have an n95 mask I have reused about five times to this point but cover it completely with a mask cover. While out, any adjustments are made touching that exterior mask cover. I don't wear gloves while out, I don't see how it's truly any different than no gloves. They're not going to magically repel contamination.
There is always a spare 30-45 seconds where I cackle in disbelief and slipping sanity while doing the "disinfect and put away the groceries" dance. I know they're saying there is minimal risk from food but I can handle the price of being overcautious in pursuit of my and my family's health.
I’m pages behind on all the Fla arguments, but a few things (not arguing with you specifically): 1) Desantis has always been selfish. No one should defend him. 2) Between fam/friends/work, I’m connected to people in 10+ counties. People are home. Restaurants are closed, etc. Many people are doing the right thing. 3) Beaches..... they are/were empty everywhere. Fishing captains are hurting tremendously. I have been seeing the random “people still on beach!” article from time to time but that is only the case for the random jogger/walker. 4) Some website used a photo of people on the Pinellas beach from a bar resort spot. The picture had a volleyball court. The resort hasn’t had that net up in a year. 5) You have people online complaining due to genuine care but then you have people online that are just miserable people and in all reality don’t care. 6) I have no doubt Desantis will open us up soon and get many killed.
Others itt can confirm this, but I've read that there are risks associated with vacuum filters. Similar to the other DIY masks early on that used Hepa furnace filters. There is a possibility of harmful chemicals/fibers included in the filter.

People needed to be scared to do the right thing. Telling everyone “pretty much mostly old and sick people are gonna die” would not have worked. The unfortunate side effect of that has been that tons of normally rational people have been scared over the edge, quietly thinking to themselves, “what...what it’s ME that dies...what...what if I kill my KIDS??!!” That is not meant to be an insult or a joke about the mental states of so many, it’s truthfully what has happened and I hope we can get some form of relief to reel them back in. I don’t don’t mean relief in finite terms, that’s a long time away, but we need good news and fast.

The US has been doing a great job distancing for the most part. The site below was predicting 80k deaths by June 1 not too long ago and it's down to 60k. I think we’re blowing past 60k pretty easily. We’re more than two-thirds of the way there. I do think more people have been good about social distancing than haven’t, which makes me think it’s going to rise again once governments loosen and people get antsy.
This time last week we were at 22k, on that trajectory we’re likely to see 55-58k by next Sunday. New cases nation wide has been pretty steady day to day.

On the masks, I believe the predominant thinking is that it prevents outbound droplets from reaching past the mask. But they can also give you a better chance if the droplets are coming at you. The Cambridge study found good efficacy in most materials even when particles smaller than coronoavirus were shot at them. You could be a healthy 25 y.o. and succumb to this virus. You have no idea what it might do to you. Obviously you have better odds if you're younger and healthier, but encouraging mask use to become a societal norm would probably prevent quite a few asymptomatic, infected ppl from spreading the virus (and lowering the R0). Yes and no. Unless I’m misreading statistics, the virus generally attacks the same groups it was before we shut everything shut down. It works, but people need to regain mental stability.
I have a P100 mask, I literally look like fucking bane with this thing on but wore it both times I left my house this weekend Lowe’s was a zoo in Columbus but they only let 100 into the store and everyone was in masks. Think the home improvement stores are probably doing well during this crisis
