I know two people that have died HermanCainAwards style. While I have seen firsthand how families/friends are impacted, it still doesn’t move the needle for me re: their avoidable death. If anything I hope it makes the families/friends reevaluate how they can contribute to the greater good. Some of these people really need the unfortunate feedback about what is actually going on.

Unfortunately there's also people out there trying not to add a little milk or just a pinch of corn starch or baking soda to make their scrambled eggs fluffier. People are weird. ideally this rash of idiocy will lead to increased teacher pay and more funding for public education.

Been screaming this for a while. I don’t have kids and have had huge arguments with friends that do have kids about the state of and funding for schools.
A lot of these ppl are little Rush Limbaughs, just like Phil Valentine was. Their audience on the internet may be 10 or 10,000. Everything is connected. So the disinformation spreads from each little cell/group to the next almost instantly. It's a massive echo chamber and it creates a nasty feedback loop where the participants get their wrongheaded views reinforced more every day. It's an existential threat to all of us just like the Trump lies/insurrection are.
As much as I would like to say these people dying are genuinely so stupid that they would really believe this bullshit, they’re not. Normally functioning adults are making choices on what info to ‘believe’ based on other factors. Mainly politics.
The way some people go out of their way to give support to selfish assholes making all of this worse for the majority of people who do the right thing never fails to blow my mind.

I dont think it’s just you and it’s a large reason why I’ve left the political discussion on this board. I think Trump fucked us up heavy as a society to the point leftist have lost a lot of empathy. I’ve seen a lot of people I respect on this board take stances on the disenfranchised and people with obvious mental health issues that really disappointed me. I come from a place where I try and understand. It doesn’t always keep me from really fucking hating certain types but it does make me pause before I do

I think being for policy that you know work and also not taking into consideration that if we had those policies currently we wouldn’t be in such a shit hole is you not seeing the forest for the trees. The policy’s we have create these monsters and the policy we want significantly reduces it. We have media figures and officials who’ve for my entire life have convinced people it’s better to go broke from medical cost than it is to expect healthcare as a right. Ofc those same talking heads can convince them to act selfish during a pandemic

Does elite media have influence? Yes, obviously. But nowhere near to this all encompassing level you assign, I assume to have a defense for friends/family who spout these same things that might end with them in this thread. It's a two way street, especially in covid when elite media has been cowed by their audiences regarding covid.
Nooooope. Sympathy, on the other hand, isn't some innately deserved thing. We see what they have been exposed to, how they've been influenced, the choices they have made, and we make the choice to feel a sense of relief and some gratification in spite of it, because ultimately we believe that we are better off with these individuals out of the picture than we would be otherwise.
"I'll choose to do my own research" is their new dog whistle mantra they choose to repeat.
