3 slim thugs on the all Googan everything setup. Had a 4th but he jumped and spit me out. Iill just assume he was the biggest of the day.
Went to a river in an area that was just opened up for deer season. Only landed one but had strikes from several other decent ones.
I enjoy these two follows for fly fishing Both are from my original neck of the woods for chasing trout, the Driftless area https://youtube.com/c/DrewLooknFishy https://youtube.com/channel/UC_Vyjwm6dUtEWXUXehZZ7dg
Hopefully this colder weather should have the trout pushed up into the bayous. Excited to fish this weekend. Somehow my powerpole motherboard was fried , $350 later that's fixed. Also dropped like $300 getting a new GPS VHS installed. This boat is for sure a money pit.
i keep telling myself I don’t want a boat but then I find myself looking for one. Maybe a solo skiff or something similar. Then I’m like well I may as well get one o can take my kid on and a used Carolina skiff are fairly cheap. Then I’m like I don’t wanna take care of it and catch a shit ton of fish in the kayak anyways. Then I start over the process the next week.
As someone who has fished a shit ton out of a kayak , I can tell you, it is much more rewarding to have a boat. I loved fishing out of a kayak. But it is no comparison to a boat. You can just get to so many more places. You can get a skiff or small boat for you and your kid for $10k or maybe a little cheaper.
I’ll probably wait until he is a bit older. But I’m getting to the point where I have almost explored every lil water way from my launch. But I’m also discovering new ways to target fish. It’s a absolutely nuts how much better I am at catching fish now compared to last year. I would be stoked for 2 reds a trip and now I’m catching 10 plus every trip. Bull red and sheep’s are my goal doe this winter. But that requires me to learn a new spot
My dad had a 17 foot sailfish he sold right before I got back into fishing. It would have been perfect. We both regret him selling it.
I'm biased because I have a pathfinder but Maverick, Hewes, Pathfinder are great shallow water boats. If you don't want to spend a ton get a 18 foot pathfinder from the early 2000s. Can probably get one for like $15k. Will draft like 12 inches. Most will have a jack plate so you can lift the engine up out of the water and get into really shallow spots.
This is the newest addition to my rod lineup. Rod #5. Penn Battle 5000 on a 7 foot medium heavy ugly stick. Gonna put 40 pound power pro braid on it tonight as the main line. Planning to use for mangrove snapper, trigger fish, bull reds, smaller cobia, etc.
If you want a badass skiff that won’t break the back, check out a Towee. My buddy has one and it’s fantastic. Poles like a dream.
White trout, specks, and flounder. I don’t know how many white trout are in there but would guess I kept 20 in the 12 inch range.
yah that’s what everyone says. i was too wiped out to clean them. put a ton of ice on them. hopefully they’ll won’t be ruined in the morning.
White trout and specks are best for frying. They are awesome fried. Of all the inshore fish I think flounder is the cleanest and best. Redfish is great grilling on the half shell, pan cooking , or frying. It is very versatile.
Also Milkman was right, the white trout were mushy when I fileted them Sunday morning. You have to put pressure on a fish to hold them down as you run the knife through them , but when you did that the filet would just mush under your finger and fall apart. Also a 12 inch white trout filet is a tiny nugget. Still filleted all of them and found a friend that wanted to fry them and donated them to him. The state record white trout in MS is 6 pounds which blows my mind.
You can handle good size cobia with that. I use the same setup for inshore that I use for sightfishing cobia. I have a Penn Clash 3000 on a medium Fenwick World Class with 30 lb test that I’ve landed multiple 30+ lb cobia on and we were pulling them off rays. Your leader matters more when you’re fishing like that, though I realize that’s not how everyone targets them. I’ve fought 2 smaller sails on the same setup while we were fishing off rays, which was hilarious because I had zero chance of landing them, but it was still awesome to fight and watch them tail walk for 2 minutes or so.
I suck at fileting fish. That also is why I mainly catch and release because I feel bad butchering meat. Probs will start keeping a few here and there to practice. Think I mainly just need a better set up. Sharp knife and better surface than the tailgate of my truck
The old school Rapala knives are probably what I use the most. They’re cheap and if they wear out to the point where you can’t resharpen them, drop $10 for another. Bubba Blades are insanely overpriced and I would rather have a Dexter if you want higher end.
Do any of y’all edit and post on YouTube. I know it’s saturated but I kinda wanna do more. I have a go pro but I think I have to stop listening to music or it gets copyrighted lol
Damn son , tailgate of the truck? That's rough. Are there no marinas/harbors /boat launches with cleaning stations near you?
not familiar with the penn clash or that reel. You can def land cobia on smaller rods/reels you just have to set your drag properly.
I just looked at pics and I don’t have a clash. I have a Penn Conquer and Daiwa Saltiga. Point remains.
I do. Since my dad can't do the type of fishing I do anymore, I put together clips from each trip and send to him. Lets him see some of the rivers or parts of rivers he's never been to. So I don't do it to get views per se, but they're there.
nope. It’s tailgate of truck rundown wooden bench. I’m mad I didn’t put in an outside sink now in my house
That's weird. I guess you're fishing in a remote location. We have like 5 -10 different public places to clean fish here.
Do yall ever fish braided line with a jighead for inshore? Do you worry the fish will see the braided line? I guess you could tie the braided main line to a swivel then go with fluro for the leader tied to the jig head? Does anyone use fluro for the main line for inshore fishing? It's more expensive but it isn't THAT expensive. Long story short I was using a braided blue color main line last weekend tied directly to a jig head and the fish were still hitting it.
I use braid with fluro leader with FG knot. Tbh, the water is so dirty here you could go just braid. But I also hammer oyster beds so the braid gets frayed if I don’t use a fluro leader. long story short. Depends where you are fishing
i have wanted to lately, not because i am any expert or catch a lot of fish, but i get into quite a few precarious situations around rivers and an outtake reel would be fun to revisit.
