Watched it this weekend, best movie I've seen in a while. May still go see it in a theater but as a non-book-reader I'm glad I could watch at home with subtitles to pick up on a lot of the nuances I would have missed just trying to keep everyone straight. Really interesting to see how clearly the source material inspired Star Wars, as someone who knows none of the background. I know why they got all big-name actors, but part of me wishes that had gone with some more unknowns. My brain the whole time kept calling everyone Timothee Chalomet, Oscar Isaac, and Jason Mamoa instead of Paul, Leto, and Duncan. Torn between going out and buying the book or waiting to see if we get Part II, enjoying the film for what it is, then reading the books.
Where do we want this movie series to end at? It’s been a long time since I’ve read these, but is it the 3rd or 4th books that stuff really goes off the rails? As good as I’ve heard this movie is, I’m sure a lot of people would find it hard to suspend belief during God Emperor books and stuff.
Haven't ready any of the comments, was kind of a let down for me....they should have done a mini series. Crammed ALOT into 2.5 hours Visually extremely cool, really enjoyed that bit
I’m sorry, I want to do my part and all, but I’m done with theaters. I find it much more enjoyable watching a movie from the comforts of my own home
Part 2 a go, book 2 has to happen since it's a continuation of Paul DV back in August: “There is ‘Dune’s second book, ‘The Messiah of Dune,’ which could make an extraordinary film. I always saw that there could be a trilogy; after that, we’ll see. It’s years of work; I can’t think of going further than that.”
Curious why the little robot mosquito didn’t just kill him instead of stopping in front of his eye for like a stand off
They're supposed to be triggered by movement, so if you stay still you have a chance If they used infra-red instead, Paul would be dead and we'd have a short story instead of a multi-book saga
Emperor - Alexander Saarsgard Feyd - Alphe Allen Irulan - Anya Taylor Joy Alia - Some precocious kid actor
Still trying to figure out what this was Some modified gimp suit wearing human sex toy Big stretch to being Yueh's wife taken apart like a doll as she was likely tortured and killed A Harkonnen pet I'm betting on nothing significant or an early nod to Tleilaxu
Given how hot Arrakis is, you’re probably dealing with a near permanent thermal crossover so IR might not be the best choice.
These things are controlled by an assassin and the camera on them have poor visual quality due to the suspensor field that grants it flight. The field also makes them crazy slippery so it was a testament to Paul’s gifts that he was able to grab it like he did. Plus as Aptos said, they are designed to be attracted to motion to compensate for it’s weakness
Watched last night on HBO Max without having any knowledge of the story and really enjoyed it. Also sat there thinking the whole time "man this would have been awesome to see in IMAX or a Dolby Digital theatre." The visuals and sound was just insane. Only thing I could compare it to in that regard was maybe Interstellar. I might have to rectify that. Looking forward to waiting for part 2 and watching backstory/spoiler reviews on YouTube!
I hope when part 2 is released, they rerelease part 1 for a limited time. Be awesome to see them back-to-back in the theater.
I just hope there's a director's cut that gets released at some point, perhaps right before the 2nd movie comes out..
I've done the LOTR Triple header when RotK came out... Not sure I'd do that again but it was quite the day.
Saw it in IMAX last night. Was an awesome experience, but the sound may have been more impressive than the screen even (other than a handful of times when you couldn't pick up some quiet dialogue. I saw Dunkirk in the same theatre and had the same problem). Made those moments like ships bombarding and The Voice that much better.
Also shameless plug for those who love sci-if or fantasy to check out the Wheel of Time thread. New show looks amazing.
The first time I read the series it was somewhere in Children of Dune (Third book of the series) that it became convoluted. Earlier in this thread I posted that 4 movies is probably the max. Two for Dune, two for Dune Messiah.
I read it and then watched it at home. Going to see it in imax and then I’ll start the next book. Really enjoyed both the book and movie.
the execs were more concerned about hbo max performance than theaters, that is why they were waiting. it did well on both which is what they want.
I’m just still burnt about Blade Runner not doing great and I loved this movie. Didn’t want it to suffer the same fate.
What’s weird is I thought the book was dorky af so didn’t finish it, but I fucking love this movie. Then there is the expanse, and outside of Det. Miller and Amos, I thought the show was dorky, but I fucking love the book. Anyway I’ll stop talking about shit no one cares about and show myself out.
