I drink smoothies religiously, almost every morning for the past 10 years. Usually a leafy green/blueberries/banana/other fruit with non-dairy milk. Sometimes with yogurt, chia seeds, etc. I don't know much about nutrition other than it's really good and makes me feel awesome. I want to concoct the ultimate super-food-perfect smoothie recipe. Ancient tenets stupid shit. But not sure if some of these overlap or if I could substitute elsewhere. Here's my first draft Kale/spinach 1 banana 1 blueberries/raspberries Mango/pineapple/pomegranate seeds Chia/hemp/flaxseed mix 0% fat greek yogurt Oat/Almond/Soy milk 1 raw egg (you never taste it) What could I be adding? What is really not needed? Critique Me Capstone 88 Iron Mickey Truman Dump Nandor the Relentless miles fish Rabid Lyrtch
Ok let me get my nerd going. There is no superfood concoction you can really make. Your health will be the summation of soooooo many variables. Nutrition, exercise, stress, happiness/joy, genetics, environment, etc. then when you focus on nutrition that’s driven by daily habits over the course of decades. One meal, one week, one month is a spec of sand. Don’t get hung up in the minutia and let perfect be the enemy of good. Eat a well balanced meal full of lean protein, veggies, fruits, and as many other non-processed carbs over the course of your life to maintain a healthy weight and that will likely produce the best outcomes for you. Will taking your Vitamin A from 90% of daily recommended value to 100% change anything? Likely not. Will it hurt? Likely not. As for that particular smoothie, that’s pretty great, but it would also come down to the rest of your day. The closest way to know how your diet is going internally is to get a blood panel and see where some of those values are. If they’re lacking, add them in naturally or through supplementation. tl;dr eat a well balanced diet for years on years on years, exercise with a mix or cardiovascular workouts and strength training, manage stress best you can, find joy and happiness in your life. Don’t get bogged down in the minutia
I like my smoothies with spinach, strawberries, banana, flax, chai, milk. Ice and that’s about it. I’m not opposed to throwing in other fruits that need to be used.
Unless you’re eating for performance then it’s as much red meat, rice, veggies, and Ben & Jerry’s as you can stuff down your gullet without throwing up.
Wow thanks for shitting on my dream jk I think it's a psychological thing starting my day with such a nutrient blast, no matter how fake that placebo effect is. I have been reading a lot about the physical effect of stress on the body/mind/longevity. Crazy stuff that is so overlooked.
Pineapple is only used to brine pork before a long slow smoke, but the wife likes something stiffer and more hardwood.
Im not a smoothie enthusiast. My only critique is non fat Greek yogurt is gross. Regular 5% Greek yogurt is amazing and I probably eat too much of it. A little Greek yogurt w some honey is a great snack/ dessert. Also buy Chobani whenever you can. Great company that seeks out refugees and immigrants for employment.
Do you eat the whole thing in one meal? Would you eat all those ingredients separately in one sitting? How many calories does that come out to? Grams of sugar, etc?
Do you measure ingredients and do you regularly work out? If so what type of exercise. What time do you drink the smoothie and when do you eat lunch? What do you eat for lunch? What do you eat for dinner? Those answers will get us closer to optimization.
MLS asked this question to her nutritionist about the health benefits and got an answer along the lines of: "Well it largely depends on the diet of your partner" Fuck you lady.
I knock out a smoothie of two bananas, frozen strawberries, a couple blueberries, non sweetened almond milk pretty much every day I have work. Takes like 1 minute to make and while I'm sure there are a litany of reasons this is somehow unhealthy it's a program that has worked for me to not eat trash when I wake up.
Do the same smoothie every morning. Frozen berries Banana PB Tsp of matcha powder Scoop of protein powder
What machine do you use? Love my vitamix. Cayenne pepper adds a nice taste and benefits. For mornings I’ll add a few shots of espresso from time to time. Banana and avocado give good consistency. Everything in a smoothie depends what you’re wanting out of it.
Make a smoothie most mornings. Don’t care if it’s the “healthiest” but it’s got some good shit in it and my daughter enjoys it. Spinach Banana Strawberry Blueberries Raspberries Peanut butter Whole milk Protein powder Ice
Make a batch of smoothies every morning that I drink throughout the day so I don't have to worry about my greens intake Kale - 4-5 cups (I get the pre-chopped bags and stick them in the freezer, numbs the bitterness) Berry Flavored Powdered Greens - 1 scoop Orange Flavored Electrolytes - 1 scoop Ground Turmeric - 1/2 tsp Ground Ginger - 1/2 tsp Ground Cayenne - 1/8 tsp Black Peppercorns - 4-5 Ground Flax - 2 tbsp Flesh/Juice of a Lemon (sometimes the skin) Then I alternate topping off with either a banana or avocado throw in some ice and about 3 1/2 cups of water and you're left with a citrusy, sweet or nutty drink with a slight kick
Bunch of spinach (fresh) Banana (fresh) and/or apple Frozen fruit (some combo of frozen mango, papaya, pineapple, berries, cherries) 0% Greek yogurt Agave syrup Flax seed if I have it Add a bit of water to loosen it up profit
We’ve now had a “1 blueberry” and “a couple blueberries” smoothie recipes posted and I’m going insane.
Everybody loves Top 10 lists: Spoiler So here is a Top 7 list, instead: 1) Bananas are some of the cheapest items (by weight) that you’ll find in the produce section. Assuming you like them, always toss one in. They sweeten smoothies well, and also have pectin, which is a good thickening agent. 2) Still bananas. Freeze them when they start to brown. Too many people toss them, but peel them and throw them in freezer safe bags. Frozen bananas will eliminate the need for extra ice…Don’t forget to peel them, before freezing, or they will be a bitch. 3) Add a form of fat. If you make your smoothie more viscous with a healthy fat (nuts, nut butter, avocado, etc), the smoothie will aerate more and give it a better mouth feel. Soft serve ice cream tastes smoother, b/c of how aerated it is (and all of the sugar and fat). 4) Chocolate hides a lot of the taste of leafy greens. You can hid a salad’s worth of spinach or kale, in a big enough chocolate smoothie (peanut butter and mint [separately] are great to add in, too). 5) If you want a smoothie with texture, don’t add whatever you want to feel in the smoothie, until the end. Piggybacking off of #4, I’ll make a chocolate protein smoothie (inundated with enough greens to make the color green) flavored with peppermint extract, and will toss in dark chocolate chips towards the end on a lower speed. I end up with something that tastes like a mint chocolate chip milkshake. 6) If you like the milkshake consistency, then choose frozen fruit options. No need to add ice. 7) If you think you might make this a part of your daily life regimen, then invest in a quality blender. I’ve had a Vitamix for a decade now, and it runs as strong as it did when it was new (and I’ve used it nearly daily during that time). It also goes to such a high speed, that it pulverizes and aerates everything extremely well. There is a reason that smoothie shops use high-end blenders.
Water Spinach OR mixed greens Banana (fresh) and/or apple Frozen fruit (island OR berry mix from Costco) Flax seed Plant protein
If a female asks me if her dude's manjuice has nutritional value, I'm saying "absolutely" before she gets done with the question because everyone deserves some happiness.
2 scoops of chocolate peanut butter protein 1 banana handful blueberries handful strawberries greek yogurt chia seeds (idk what they do but wife makes me add them) oat milk 1 scoop peanut butter 3-4 ice cubes that's my go-to when i'm doin smoothies
That smoothie covers your nutrients. Any changes would be *extremely* nit picky. Yea stress has such a horrendous affect on aging, heart issues, really everything. Stress is needed for us to grow and adapt but managing it is the key.
My go to is simple: Leafy green: almost always kale or spinach Frozen fruit medley (Costco bags are good and cheap) Low-fat yogurt Acai juice Water and ice I'll add a banana if I think it'll go to waste otherwise. Flax seed oil and egg whites on occasion too.
- 1 medium banana - three scoops of the strawberry section of Neapolitan ice cream - avocado with the pit (important) - 1 cup bbq sunflower seeds for zest and texture - 3 tbsp canola oil - 1 poached egg - top off blender with milk/tea/baja blast depending on mood - push “on” and let it blend
Been doing smoothies for breakfast most days for about 11 years now. Here is my current version (yes it is expensive and yes it takes a few mins to make it): Water Non-Fat Non-sweetened Oat Milk (regular milk causes too much froth/air(same issue with whey protein)) Spinach - 1-1.5 cups (will add a bit of kale if I have some) 1/4 banana (mainly for the added sweetness) (freeze the rest for future smoothies) 4-5 frozen avocado cubes (sell them at publix in frozen fruit section) 3-4 frozen coconut cubes (sell them at publix in frozen fruit section) Frozen Blueberries (I eye ball it but probably a 3/4-1 cup) Frozen Strawberries (again, eye ball it but usually like 7-10 strawberries) 1 tsp chia seeds 1 tsp hemp hearts 2 tbs rolled oats *1 tsp psyllium husk powder (bahgawd the deluxe poops) *1 tsp of Orgain superfoods powder: https://orgain.com/products/organic-superfoods-powder *2 tsp orgain collagan and super foods powder: https://www.costco.com/orgain-collagen-+-superfoods,-unflavored,-1.6-lbs.product.100813940.html *1 tbs Vega Protein and Greens powder(Berry flavor): https://myvega.com/products/vega-protein-and-greens?variant=14574624800811 Blending order is important: 1. Blend these on high first- water, oat milk, spinach/kale, banana, avocado, coconut, blueberries, strawberries, chia, hemp, oats 2. Add everything marked with an * above after the first stuff if blended well- blend this batch on lowest setting (it is all of the powders) and you really just want to run it for a short bit to get it all mixed in. This will generally make about 30-35oz of smoothie which fits almost perfectly in a standard nalgene
½ cup Organic Probiotic Whole Milk Yogurt 1 Fresh Orange, peeled ½ cup Frozen, Diced Mango ½ cup Frozen, Diced Pineapple Honey, to taste (optional)
I'm a simple man... Handful of fresh spinach Frozen Blueberries and Strawberries Chobani Vanilla Greek Yogurt Water Sometimes I'll get crazy and mix in a banana or apple if I have some that are within a few days of going bad.
