Oh, I know. I never expect him to ever match that album. But, I also appreciate everything he’s done since. 400 unit is such a solid band
There were quite a few songs that sounded way better live than on the album. Isbell and his strings sounded so pure and smooth.
Snakes and I will take all of the credit for pushing Overseas I've said it before, but I heard it in Santa Barbara which was the first time he played it (no Shires) and I was hooked. It was unnamed at the time he played it. The lyrics from the start and guitar hook are so damn good.
The more I listen the more I love this album more. Last night was special. His story about river was cool. Cobb made Jason play the piano and sing in studio so that’s actually him playing the keys at the beginning. every band should do a livestream like that after they put out a record. What a cool idea.
After a weekend of thorough listening: 1. Dreamsicle 2. Be afraid 3. Only children 4. Overseas 5. It gets easier 6. Letting you go 7. River 8. St. Peter’s autograph 9. Running with our eyes closed 10. What I’ve done to help
It is pretty wild that they released one of the two worst songs on the album as a single that got a ton of play on satellite radio. ETA: Although that’s not totally atypical in today’s music scene.
I feel like Be Afraid would have fit better on TNS. And River could be a Springsteen song (his own song about the same subject notwithstanding)
Slow it way down, friend. River is a killer song in its own right but we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves mentioning it in the same sentence as The River.
The Isbell-Springsteen comparison is a good one though because both are some of the best narrative songwriters ever. That story in Rolling Stone about Isbell meeting the Boss and Springsteen singing Traveling Alone to him is amazing.
Agreed, not comparing it to The River at all but put that comment in there because of the song he has by that name. Mostly meant more stylistically with the piano and vocal intro/first verse
Sounds like we just got our lines crossed. To me, The River is quite possible Springsteen’s most powerful song. If I’m putting an Isbell tune up against it it’s Elephant. Same desperate yet resigned energy.
"hey man I love that song 'i grown tiiiiired of travelin' alone'"...what an unreal feeling for Springsteen to tell you that
Think American Aquarium’s new album has a bigger Springsteen feel than Isbell’s. Lamentations might be their best album.
Just turned onto this podcast and I fucking love it. The catalog of guests is incredible. Won't let me embed Spotify for some reason. https://open.spotify.com/episode/75xQ11xLsUut5rIHhqemHJ?si=0d11ZrhSSFqLI4OV3wiwOA
Isbell was on last night SiriusXM with David Fricke on the Writer's Block show. Pretty good listen if you have the sub as they covered the current situation, John Prine, Muscle Shoals sound, David Crosby. Jason said he's been jamming a lot of Led Zeppelin at home.
Just listened to the 2nd Cooley stream from last night, pretty solid. Played a fast Where The Devil Don’t stay which was interesting
Not surprised but the August Isbell gig I had tix for is postponed until June 2021. Surreal to have tix for something that far in advance.
