Does anyone have any takes on Cynic? I listened to Focus a while back and couldn’t get that into it, but one of the review channels I follow talked about Traced In Air the other day so I’ve been listening to that, and I like it better. Curious if there any fans on here.
I liked Focus a lot a while ago. I recognize how revolutionary that album was. Tried to listen to them again recently and wasn’t feeling it. Felt dated, for lack of a better term.
Yeah agreed, I understood it was very influential but with the synthesized vocals and whatnot, dated seems like an accurate word for when I first heard it.
http://www.invisibleoranges.com/spectral-lore-mare-cognitum-wanderers-review/ The split double album between Spectral Lore and Mare Cognitum is really good. It’s progressive atmospheric black metal, with a good dose of melody. Each song is about a different planet in the solar system, inspired by Gustav Holst’s classical work. The bands alternate songs, result is really epic in scale. I recommend to any of you guys who like progressive music or black metal.
i like this 2015 album from Outre-Tomb. HM-2 death metal from Montreal. Montreal has one of the world's great regional metal scenes, from tech death to black metal.
i started getting into I.N.R.I. by Sarcafago (from Brazil). this album came out in 1987 and still sounds very modern. all the black metal bands in the second wave took heavy influence from this album; both the aesthetics in the photo on the cover (corpsepaint, etc), and the music (Bathory-style aggressive thrash with Satanic imagery). this is one of, if not the, the first instances of blast beats appearing in metal. the riffs are absolutely sick - check out 'Nightmare' as an example. this album is probably as influential as Bathory, Venom, and Motorhead in laying the groundwork for black metal.
Khemmis released their Doomed Heavy Metal EP today. Has some live tracks, the Dio cover previously mentioned, and I think a new track
I like them both but only one of them does massive guitar harmonies in like every song so Khemmis for me I guess
also this "mini" album is basically 3 live songs and a cover. the other two had been previously released in some form or another. Empty Throne was on something called a "flexi-disc" from Decibel magazine a few years ago, so probably hard to track down but it was out there. i don't blame any band for trying to make a buck but this is kind of lame.
Elder all day. One man band Ripped To Shreds has a new release. Now signed to Pulverised Records. Last album was pretty good.
new Ulcerate is out. older stuff is too dissonant and atonal for me, but this release is laced with weird melodies. super dense, like being in a thunderstorm. this and the Mare Cognitum/Spectral Lore split album are two early contenders for my personal AOTY.
