Bunk and McNulty in real life Pierce: Our chemistry—it's been a great friendship from the bat. He has a great curiosity about things. He's very well read, loves to go out and have a good time. I think we share that approach to life.
Elba: I couldn't afford to stay anymore. This was literally the last audition that I was up for that could change my life. It was in December when was I auditioning. In January, my lease was up, my daughter was about to be born. It was like, Get this job and you stay. Don't get this job and you won't be able to afford to stay and you'll go back. The day my daughter was born was the day I got the job. "Man it feels good when it happens like that, two days from going back to sellin crack"
Michael K. Williams (Omar Little): They kept writing—I knew that dude was gay—all they kept doing: Omar rubs the boy's lips. Omar rubs the boy's hair. Omar holds the boy's hand. I'm like, "Don't gay people fuck? You know what I mean? Don't they kiss? Don't they grab each other? I was like, Listen, we've got to step it up."
Anybody following this irl case up in Baltimore involving the "Gun Trace Task Force"? Not that it's surprising or anything but they have evidence that a group of cops was straight up robbing people for years. The fucking cops themselves are Omar!
In my mind....conversations exactly like the one below are happening and have happened in precincts across Baltimore.
Y’all should listen to the NYT Daily podcast. The last three days has been a series called Charm City and it’s basically about how Baltimore turned into the shitshow that became the Wire.
So I’m finishing the series for the first time tonight, only the finale left. Did they intend for this show to end after season 5? I mean did they write the whole season knowing and planning for this to be the final one? Just seems like there is a lot left to happen in one episode. I don’t doubt it’ll be good though
Yes, and no... They came back with a short final season order from HBO, 10 episodes instead of 12 or 13, so they knew that the whole time. Compressed some time lines and made the finale long and quite full. And great, even if the 5th season wasn't the best of the bunch, the finale is pretty damn perfect
I believe they had some initial plans to do a 6th season & focus on the Latino fluctuation in Baltimore but it got scrapped for some reason
I hadn't seen an episode of Breaking Bad until about a month ago and binged it all. It's really good but its no Wire for damn sure
Ehh i love both equally. Season 5 of the wire leaves the GOAT series up for discussion. If s5 were stronger as a whole, it would be no contest
While seasons 1 & 2 of BB leave a bit to be desired. The building up of the storyline on their crumbling marriage wasn't fantastic TV. The process was long and drawn out.
I really enjoyed it. Definitely in my top 5 best shows, maybe top 3. Omar was amazing as expected, but all the acting was fantastic. The “fuck” scene and sheeeeeeeeit will be top of mind forever I feel like. I thought they buttoned things up pretty well. Definitely wasn’t disappointed in the finale. Breaking Bad is number 1, but to be fair, I went into that one with no expectations and went into The Wire hearing best show ever, so it wasn’t really a fair comparison. I enjoyed the realism, or at least what I perceive as realism, of the wire. No glorifying stuff. Police departments are driven by stuff other than protect and serve, and there’s no long term glory in drug dealing. You might get capped unexpectedly at a corner store or dropped in an alley for a misunderstanding.
This may be unpopular, but season 2 almost lost me. It wasn’t bad, I just didn’t care about any of the characters after they introduced such a compelling world in season 1.
Season 2 is so easy to hate your first watch. You get invested in everything with D and then they just completely shift gears. It gets better with time
Yep. A lot of people (including me) thought season 2 was a let down after the first season on the first watch. You appreciate it and like it much more after you complete the series and watch it again
I'll never understand that. I cut my teeth on s2 (watched it when it first aired having not seen s1) and it was just as engrossing and compelling as it needed to be to get me to go watch s1.
That makes sense though. The reason I wasn’t as into season 2 was because season 1 was so compelling I wanted to see more about it. So I spent half the season just sort of waiting on Avon and crew to be involved.
That scene alone should have got someone an emmy nod. Unbelievable not one person was even nominated in an acting role.
