According to this Athletic article, Fanatics has the NFLPA license, not the NFL, so that would make sense: Fanatics is set to announce the acquisition of famed trading card company Topps on Tuesday, people with knowledge of the deal told The Athletic. Fanatics last year gobbled up licensing rights from MLB, the MLBPA, the NBA, the NBPA and the NFLPA, leading many in the industry to believe that Topps would have little choice but to eventually sell to Fanatics, the preeminent power in licensed merchandising. Fanatics declined to comment. Fanatics is starting a next-generation trading card company that will give sports entities — such as the NBPA and NBA, along with MLB and MLBPA — partnerships in the venture. The NBPA and NBA will have equities in the new venture with Fanatics, The Athletic previously reported. Fanatics' deal with MLB will make it the league's trading cards licensee when Topps' current deal expires in 2025. Fanatics is led by Michael Rubin, the founder and executive chairman who has taken over as chief executive. He is also a co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils.
I guess I just assumed that by fanatics having rights to NBA and NFL (just PA) that acquiring Panini was an afterthought? I have not read too much in to this clearly. So by panini selling would just give fanatics rights to spectra, prizm, optic/donruss, etc.. formats?
I would imagine what would happen is Fanatics would buy Panini America and produce cards under whatever brands Panini America owns and Panini Group would continue producing soccer stuff for the European market.
If Fanatics acquires the rights to Upper Deck products I'll start doing some cartwheels. My body needs SP Authentic and Exquisite back.
Anyone following the Bowman’s Best Rookie Card Debate? Apparently prospects were numbered as prospects the last few years. This year, they are numbered normally like actual rookies and vets. Beckett is labeling all prospect base cards in this set as their official RC. Includes most of the big name prospects (Wander, Witt, Jasson etc.) Base Wander prices starting to soar on eBay.
I thought you had to make a MLB appearance to then be a rookie following year, so Beckett is just making shit up themselves?
So basically Beckett just inflated the price of Bowman's Best and anything 2022 with Wander in the set will be a vet card?
No different than retail stores raising the price on hangers and blasters to match resell. I am just gonna go dark on collecting for a bit.
Ive shifted to soccer as my primary chase now. MLB/NFL/NBA just got so out of hand. I’ll buy stuff when I find it(rare) and usually stash anything that’s halfway decent.
Sure. But Topps Series 1 was going to be Wander's first rookie and Beckett just swooped in and pulled a fast one.
Bought my nephew and I a few hobby boxes. Topps 2021 Update Series Hobby Jumbo Box, 2021 Allen & Ginter Hobby Box and 2021 Heritage High Number. No idea if I wasted $300 or not but I thought what the hell. He’s just now getting into baseball and thought it would be something fun to share with him.
Itching to buy a hobby box and so far, the Bowman's best Master looks like a solid buy? 4 autos in there I believe.
So tried to search through the thread but couldn't really find what I was looking for. Basically have a ton of baseball cards from 89-92ish and hockey cards from 92-96ish that I really don't have a use for. Looked through COMC last night to see if there was anything worthwhile and just set aside the ones listed for $20+ (only a handful). Is there a good place to sell these that doesn't require a ton of effort? Sorry, I'm sure this question has been answered 100 times in here but I really haven't followed this stuff for 15+ years.
eBay is the easiest but fees suck. I think myslabs.com is going to start allowing raw cards to be sold on there. Fees are only 1% if you want to wait until they open that up.
Thanks guys, appreciate it. Dumb question but if you do sell something, how much does it usually cost to ship? What kind of case do people expect you to ship the card in?
eBay has an option to send cards under $20 in a plain white envelope. Over usually in a bubble mailer. And put the card in a top loader with a piece of painters tape holding it closed.
Unless something has changed, Beckett considers Wander Franco's card in that his rookie, so there's that. Apparently any 2022 cards with the RC designation won't be a true rookie.
I think Topps bears more of the blame since the card falls into the category of what counts as a rookie card. Beckett, however, could have done the obvious thing and recognized it as a prospect card knowing that series 1 is being released next month and Wanders card is the biggest rookie name in the checklist.
What size of penny sleeve and top holders do I need for the good hits? What size of thickness for the relics?
Generally the standard 3x4 top loader(35pt) will cover you just fine. For the thicker ones(parallels) you'll need 55pt, and relics I believe are 100 or 130. Sleeve wise just get the ultra pro penny sleeves. They should be ~$1 for a bag of 100
Has anyone else been following this drama that Backyard Breaks started last week? Cliffs: They were doing a case break and they said "well, whoever has the worst luck gets this last pack as a consolation. They open the pack and it has a Trevor Lawrence Kaboom Gold #/10. One breaker is like "well it is only fair that they get it" while the other guy is saying "well no, that isn't fair, we can't give that card away for free." They both agree that they'll keep it. They obviously got a ton of backlash for that so they decided they'd give it away to a random person on their Twitch channel. Well, that person just so happened to be a friend of theirs. What a shitshow.
Those guys are the culmination of all the bullshit in the hobby since it boomed in the last two years. It also gives a very bad name to the good breakers in the hobby.
what the fuck is the purpose of paying to participate in a break if all the best cards are going to be kept by the people doing the break. What a laughably bad joke.
People should know exactly what they are paying for when you open their stream and one dude is wearing a college basketball uniform and the other one is in a cut off T-shirt and dyed hair. Then watching them backtrack in their apology video was just as bad. “Well the box has three mini boxes and we were only giving two of those mini boxes away, not the third one which had the card in it.” Fuck those guys. I see breakers like this on tiktok all the time now, charging $70 for a blaster you can get on eBay for $50. Like why at the extra $20 to have them rip for you, you think they will get bigger hits? OH SHIT LOOK AT THIS SWEET Lamelo Ball base card, man that’s a good hit. Fuck it is, people can go buy those for $3-$5 anywhere. I understand it’s all just a gamble and I love to rip some boxes too but I’m also honest about the money I’m losing and not blind to the risk. I’ve enjoyed being back in the hobby after taking a long time off and the collection I’ve built is good for me. But these types of people are ruining it.
I watched them for a week or two as background noise while working and quickly stopped after realizing how full of shit they were. I feel bad for anyone who has bought from them and gotten screwed. They opened these fanatics mem boxes that were supposed to be like 5 or 10k worth of stuff and every single person who had a slot got completely screwed.
I’ve joined a couple breaks ever. A few random team case breaks to see if I get lucky when I’m bored, or in sets I want Royals/Chiefs cards but don’t want to buy a box. I’m amazed at the folks that join breaks daily or go on spree’s on Loupe, but I appreciate the content it provides lol
