It had so much hype. I remember when it came out all the hype about it but then we went and saw it. It was kinda “meh”.
I'd have to rewatch BWP as an adult to reaffirm but I'm in the same boat. Think I saw it when it came out around 14yo and have never had an inkling to watch it again in 25 years. Todays movie was Talk to Me and it was fantastic. Acting was pretty good by all the younger cast. Took me a while to place the mom as Eowyn from 2 Towers
Blair Witch was great for what it was when it came out. The marketing and hype was great. However, people have done found footage better since
Disagree. Works as both a psychological realistic horror and as a supernatural horror and has a simplicity that makes your imagination go crazy. Plus, the fact that they're barely acting by the end of it makes it so much more impactful.
If you include things like V/H/S you still think BWP is the best found footage production out there? Def gonna add it to the list but HH LLC set a pretty high bar.
I do. While I do like a lot of horror movies, I find realistic horror movies the scariest. Blair Witch Project, The Strangers, hell even Hush are ones that really scare me. I can enjoy stuff like Hell House LLC, but it's patently ridiculous with its premise.
Saying The Blair Witch Project is better than Hell House LLC is NOT a controversial take. Quite the opposite.
The Blair Witch Project is one of a handful of movies that legit scared the shit out of me and probably traumatized me when I saw it in theaters at the age of 13. The marketing campaign was phenomenal and obv the internet was way different back then and people couldn't ruin it on twitter and whatnot.
All this is true. Also, the fact that EVERYTHING is improvised is incredibly impressive. And, it takes a relatable fear that everyone who's ever camped in the woods has experienced (what the fuck is that moving around out there?) and uses that to scare the fuck out of you while showing you NOTHING.
Is that because of the movie or because you're just scared of spiders? I've been bitten by a brown recluse and it actually made me no longer scared of spiders because it was not a big deal.
True Statement. Fucked me up as a kid. I checked under the toilet before shitting for a real long time
I respect the hell out of the BWP. It’s the kind of low budget film every creative wishes they thought of. From its early internet marketing, is it real or is it fake, to the creativity of its writing and actors. To the sub genre it rekindled and made into juggernaut. I was 20 years old, graduated FSU and was taking some courses at UCF and the hype for the film around town was still palpable. It was still playing in semi full theaters in 2000. It just didn’t hit for me as a scary or psychological film. I absolutely loved the end but found everything else very redundant and kind of boring.
First horror movie of the month was "Deadstream." Holy shit, I loved it. It's a found footage horror-comedy about a live streamer spending the night in a haunted house. I used to watch livestreams a good bit, so that might be why a lot of the jokes landed for me, but I thought it was great. Very fun movie. Has some good jump scares, but it's definitely more of a comedy overall. One of the better films in this genre I've seen. Highly recommend it. It's on Shudder.
+1 for Grave Encounters. I watched just about every found footage film there is a year or two back. Other than As Above, So Below (and Hell House LLC), Grave Encounters is near the top for me.
Forgot about Grave Encounters. Another one not well known is The Last Broadcast. Made about a year or two before Blair Witch. Been awhile since I have watched, but remember liking.
Audiences are a lot smarter now than they were in 1982. You can make an anthology piece under that banner without causing massive revolts, although I don't honestly understand why you don't just make a horror anthology under some novel banner
I like Halloween 3. Is that a minority opinion? I remember the first time I watched it I was pissed.. I was like this isn’t Halloween..: However after rewatches I found myself enjoying it.
I don’t really remember it but thought the concept of an anthology was cool. Wearing my Trick R Treat shirt right now and wish they would have continued that series the same way instead of a one off.
Started a few days early but have watched these so far. Us No one Will Save You The Thing Hell House LLC Brotherhood of the Wolf
Watched the first 3 shorts from the original VHS last night. So far it's been about 90% douchey sexual harassment on camera and 10% demon girl killing two douches. The "Second Honeymoon" episode was fucking bad. Hoping the rest get better.
Trash Humpers is probably the most disturbing found footage film along with Cannibal Holocaust. Dashcam, Host, Deadstream are among the funnest. I think the same guy who directed the Boogeyman directed Dashcam and Host. I didn’t really care for The Boogeyman.
Anyone going to see the new Exorcist this weekend? The previews continue to look terrible and the early reviews confirm that take (currently 21% on RT). I have regal unlimited and still not sure if that's enough of a reason to sit through this mess. But i did catch a showing of the original on the big screen last night as part of a 50th anniversary deal this week and enjoyed that at least. Spoiler: 50th anniversary
So far this month House on Haunted Hill Hocus Pocus Hocus Pocus 2 Halloween Halloween II Halloween H20 Halloween Resurrection I Know What You Did Last Summer I Still Know What You Last Summer Scream S2 S3 S5 S6
I wish I could watch a full month of horror movies like some of you guys, but I just have way too much other stuff still to get through. But I'll do it for the last week of October - looking forward to Us, Dawn of the Dead and Suspiria, amongst some of my other faves.
I saw Suspiria on a VHS rental way too young and immediately fell in love. Own it on Blu-ray and try to watch it every year. I actually really enjoyed the new one but it lacks the Argento look and that Goblin soundtrack (witch!!!)
It’s really good. Didn’t like the decision on how they filmed the climax, kind of blurred the glorious gore.
agreed on that went and saw the 50th anniversary Exorcist also, wish they’d just done the original cut instead of directors though
