Absolute miracle there weren't more vehicles driving across when it went down - you can see several trucks only a minute earlier. This is still not going to have a happy ending though.
So lucky this wasn’t a few hours later during rush hour with hundreds of cars on the bridge. Besides traffic this will have a huge economic impact on Baltimore. The port will be out of commission for a while.
How were there not tugs to try and push the ship away from the bridge when it was clear it was off course? How were both sides of the bridge not immediately shut down to oncoming traffic? This is insane
Looks like the ship lost power just before entering as the lights go on and off all of a sudden. Assuming I didn't see a sped up version, it also looked like it took less than 25 seconds for it to collapse after it entered that area.
Yeah I think you're right. Probably lost hydraulic steering when it lost power. What a disaster. Not like you can just slam a boat that size in reverse and it just happens
On the entire United States. It's a major port and it will not be easy to just shift everything to other ports (that, I'm guessing, were already at near full capacity) while it's blocked by this bridge. This is quite bad.
Also jump up in your seat just before impact so you don’t feel it. Same applies for a falling elevator.
Real talk on surviving a submerged car. A lot of newer cars have headrests that can be removed and the pointy ends can be used to break the window.
Absolutely nuts how the whole bridge folds like a house of cards. Not only are you looking at months before the port can fully function, but that bridge will need to be rebuilt from the ground up because of how much collapsed. No sense in fixing it, that's a 3-4 year job ahead of Baltimore.
And good luck if it happens at 1.30 in the morning when it's pitch black. Pretty much reduces your chances from sub-50% to maybe 10%.
I’ve always hated driving over suspension bridges like the one in Memphis over the Mississippi River. Just gives me the willies. Too many movies I guess.
George Bush had demolition charges placed along the bridge. No other way it collapses like that from having one support struck.
I didn't expect multiple camera angles on a random bridge in the middle of the night. I feel awful for the people crossing it, terrifying.
I'm not sure how high the bridge was but I'm not certain you survive the collapse to try to then get out of your car that's in the water
That's a land and water transportation nightmare that's going to take years to fix. Gigantic fuck up.
"My buddy and I were at Fort Armisted Park...." Should start a separate investigation on what this guy was up to at that hour
