Asking a true freshman to go into Autzen and Happy Valley and win and then also beat Michigan sounds like a recipe to torpedo a national championship caliber team. I really like Sayin's potential but he shouldn't start this year unless the other guys are awful.
If he proves to be better than the other guys on the roster, I’m not sure what playing Howard or Brown changes. I feel like Akron-Western Michigan-Marshall-MSU-Iowa sets up perfectly for a young QB getting their legs under them heading into Oregon, especially understanding a loss in the regular season isn’t going to hurt your playoff chances now. Edit to add: I absolutely agree it would be in everybody’s best interest if one of the veterans make a jump and grab that spot. This is just playing hypotheticals.
Not sure I agree on this.. We have seen 2 different freshman lead their teams to National Championships in the last several years. Lawrence as a freshman lead Clemson to an undefeated season, winning at FSU, at Boston College and then beating Pitt (ACC Champ Game, Notre Dame and the vaunted #1 Bama team in the title. Tua came off the bench to win a national title against the #1 Georgia team. On top of that, the reigning national champs had their QB only throw for 2900 yards and won with a stifling D and a dominant ground game. The game at Oregon is going to be tough no matter who is playing QB, but we will have a pretty soft 4 week lead up to that game. Also, our defense should keep every single game close, combine that with our skill guys on offense, the 1-2 punch at RB and we likely only need good QB play for most of the season. With the 12 team playoff its all about playing your best as the year closes. I could see a scenario where Sayin starts and the defense & ground game carries us early in the year and then he starts to figure it out. I just dont want another year where there our QB play is simply OK and never really gets better. Sayin has elite tools and could explode with playing time.
The only concerning news is that Brown is still getting reps. He should be washing cars at Ricart Auto.
