Also it sucks being a poor club and not being able to spend any money on transfers, is this what Liverpool fans feel like?
signing a player on the decline on a free transfer at massive wages? I'm afraid that's not Liverpool you're thinking of...
I still don’t understand why players in situations like this in this sport continually end up signing contract extensions. You almost never see younger players leave on a free. Some players may not want to risk being left out but PSG won’t bench him next year. They want a major fee to sell him. Is it a fear of hurting the club/issues with fans if he leaves on a free after they paid 150 or 160 or whatever they paid for him? I feel like he’s easily a 1 million a week player if he moves on a free and he can likely structure a contract similarly to lebron in Cleveland where he has get out options or maybe a fairly low release clause. player power has certainly increased in the sport as far as trying to get moves out of clubs but we haven’t really seen it with the running down of contracts and the demands of lower release clauses so the player retains more control over his future.
I would imagine a release clause that is lower than the price a club is paying for a player is probably a nonstarter in most contract negotiations.
wouldn’t work on a new contract tor a player being bought tor a high fee. For a player bought for a smaller fee or homegrown so no fee? Or a 2nd contract like in the situation with mbappe? I think it makes sense. If mbappe goes to PSG and says he will sign a 4 year extension with a €50 million euro release clause or leave for free next summer, there isn’t much PSG could do. Release clauses could also be structured to lower over time to incentive to stay at least a certain set of years. It’s done a lot by smaller clubs when signing players. Upamacano and konate at Leipzig are 2 examples. I just think it’s inevitable that we see top players doing the same. Haaland at Dortmund and de ligt at juve did it so I guess it’s not unheard of. I look at Harry Kane’s situation at Tottenham also. Signed a 6 year contract. No clause out. Sure he never thought he would need to leave Spurs at the time but he isn’t paid nearly enough to sign away his entire prime with absolutely no bargaining power. He could have put a release clause in at 70 or 80 million valid after 2 years. Or becomes valid if they miss champions league or even if they have a manager other than poch. I just think the creativity on contracts has been lacking. I suspect one issue with this is a lot of agents get paid by multiple sides in a deal. The club pays the agent not just for the help with the transfer. They’re also paid to make sure their client signs a contract that benefits the club above the player.
city not fucking around in the South American teenage market this window. Word was that city and chelsea would be more active in that market with the Brexit rules coming into play but only city actually doing it so far.
Release clauses certainly make sense for extensions or 2nd contracts. It’s arguably dumb behavior for a player not give themselves a way out or wage increase bargaining power in that case. Especially if they are still young or in their prime. Dortmund and Juve still stand to make a substantial amount of money on Haaland and De Ligt even if they just end up getting the release clause price. Dortmund stand to make €50m on a reported €70m release clause and Juve will make about €65m on a €150m clause. Honestly don’t see anyone ever playing that for De Ligt tho. Kane is more of unique situation since he was an academy product. You will just never see a transferred player get a release clause that’s less than what was paid for them, regardless of the increase in player power. A release clause guaranteeing a loss on an investment would just be hilariously bad business.
I kind of agree but isn’t a club guaranteeing a loss when they buy a 29 or 30 year old player? Those still happen. I could see it in a situation where the clause kicks in 2-3 years into the contract and it’s an older player but more likely it will be those 2nd contracts for players who’ve been successful and the club want to tie them down longer term. Especially true for academy products at big clubs. A clause doesn’t mean you have to leave but it gives you some power to control your career. I also think those sort of mechanisms becoming more common would lower fees in general and then allow the clauses to be even more prevalent.
Buying older players is definitely a loss as far as the cost of the transfer goes. Although at that point clubs are paying for experience and proven quality. They pretty much know what they are getting unless there’s just a substantial drop off in form. Also, unless the player is truly exceptional at their position, you rarely see 29+ year olds going for more than £40m these days. Zidane to Real back in 2001 was still the most expensive transfer for a 29+ year old until Ronaldo went to Juve. Haaland is so expensive because he still has enormous potential to get even better. Mbappe is so expensive because he’s already elite at 22 years old and a team could get 10+ years of world class striker play.
Mino doing Mino things imo. To me this screams nobody wants to pay Dortmund’s asking price so he’s trying to panic a club into ponying up the cash.
I just don’t see someone paying that along with his high salary. They should learn from keeping bale a year or two longer than they should have and loan hazard next season to let him potentially rebuild some value somewhere and sell next summer.
Is thinking Neymar ain't it a hot take? I feel like his selfishness and big game panic really undercut his credentials, and that's putting aside the diving business.
I don’t think that’s off but I also think the new contract is the right move for PSG with the uncertainty around mbappe also.
the big losers here are spanish papers that dont get to have another summer trying to float neymar back to barca rumors
I would disagree with big game panic being a thing but the off-the-pitch selfishness and the injury history would make me think twice of shelling out over a hundred million in transfer fees for him. Staying with PSG therefore makes the most sense to me.
Will be very interesting to see how PSG rebuild that squad assuming that mbappe goes to Real Madrid this summer.
I know real aren’t in the best financial position but if he wants to go there and won’t sign an extension with PSG then PSG have to try and find a way to make it work. Even if it’s some multi-year structured deal. Can’t lose him for free. I guess they could try and take the risk or maybe convince him to sign an extension with a release clause that real can trigger when their finances are better? That transfer just seems inevitable.
French clubs other than PSG are likely going to be raided this summer with the precarious financial position those clubs are in right now.
they also had a TV deal blow up in the middle of Covid. They took a deal that looked too good to be true and ended up being too good to be true and the company (mediapro) couldn’t make the payments. This article does a good job of explaining it. This plus covid plus cancelling their season early last season has a lot of the Ligue 1 clubs in massive trouble. The tv deal is 40% lower than the one they were expecting last summer. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fo...will-not-stop-ligue-1-hemorrhaging-money/amp/
