Seems like those types almost always bust but I have no data to back up my thesis I love there’s NIL, hate that we’re so fucking dumb about it with no governance
yea seems like our fallback option after we miss on Curtis Spoiler and then we will need a fallback option after we miss on Bentley
Tracks w what Mizzou people are hearing tho. We look forward to welcoming him in the portal in 2 years
Not really relevant to this comment but just overall as a whole, I think portal stuff is going to change quite a bit in structure once this house case goes through so the focus is going to shift almost wholly back to HS recruiting starting in this 2026 class.
I guess it really boils down to if the house case goes through and has the intended enforcement / teeth they say it will have
already is cheaper to shop in HS than Free Agency. Issue is more of a risk, evaluation gamble going that route. But cheaper to retain a player than it is to tamper with one elsewhere.
consensus from the smart schools seems to be to focus HS spending on OL/DL, then focus on skill positions, and a QB that you can project who doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Use the Portal for your QB and poaching skill players that pop at smaller schools to round out the roster.
What is the possible time frame on that going through after the version they sent in this week got shut down?
agents are using the house case to move up timelines for recruits getting paid, especially in Southern California with some key reclassifications. I’m beginning to think it’s all bullshit
the majority of schools in the top 15 last year had a QB they pulled out of the portal. Now look at the projected top 3 QBs in the draft. All portal guys. Then go look at the top OL, DTs and DEs. Most stayed at their school all 3-5 years.
They had articles about it saying as much, Deloitte monitoring NIL deals as fair market value and then penalties for anyone not doing that. The thought would be that the house settlement would shield from lawsuits and allow enforcement of this. I don’t pretend to know any more than I have read in these articles on it.
teams are also front loading NIL deals so when the cap is instituted, the players are much cheaper "against the cap"
There’s going to be challenges to it. There already have been. I think state of Oregon already said they weren’t going to abide by the rules of disclosing nil deals. I think the thought is once house case goes through it would take federal legislation to dictate the rules or something to not have every state do this. Trying to recall what I read, not a lawyer.
yea the clearinghouse is not long for this world. Its either Federal Legislation or Employment Status that creates a uniform system, most likely the latter when the 2030s breakaway happens.
How many DTs has Texas brought in from the portal the last 15 months? OSU has brought in a bunch of OTs in the portal. Oregon brought in 3 highly ranked OL this year. OL and DL everywhere seem to be going for 7 figures because of the demand. QBs in the portal I get, but again, OSU, Texas, Georgia and Bama are all probably starting kids they recruited out of HS. All those programs seem smart and successful to me.
There has yet to be a big money HS QB that has worked out at the school they started at. Sayin and Manning are about to try and be the 1st. Every other QB transferred 1-2x before finding the right fit.
"Skill positions" also have an asterisk in terms of context because there are a lot more WRs who can go out and catch 60 passes for 800 yards across CFB than DL and OL who can competently play at the highest levels of CFB. So from a numbers standpoint, of course more RBs, WRs, CBs, etc., are going to be signed than QB, OL and DL because there are more of them.
And if we're basing it on NFL picks (with the QBs), at least 3-6 OL/DL (Simmons, Nolen, Harmon, Green, Scourton, Jackson) could go first round tonight after transferring.
the house should probably focus on improving the life's of americans and not capping how much money young kids get off THEIR LABOR
Admire your blind optimism, but good luck finding the 7 Dems willing to vote for it (which you dont need for a budget) Booker has been leading the way on the pro-athlete bill, so anything would need his support.
Ohio State took two OTs this cycle. Onianwa (Rice) will start at LT and is a one-and-done free agent. Daniels (Minnesota) is an Ohio kid we overlooked despite being Paris Johnson’s cousin. He has three years left. Other than that, we took Simmons in the 2023 portal, but that’s it for OTs.
So over a 3-year span, 3 of your 4 starting OTs will be from the portal, right? That seems to go against the idea that the "smart teams" aren't prioritizing or valuing OL in the portal.
We never had the blank check people assumed we had. Teams like UGA are just starting to play bag-ball instead of hammer the NFL pipeline angle
3/5 of our OL this year will be from the portal. Part of that is because Mario was terrible at developing OL talent.
If I were to guess, Daniels probably starts at RT in 2025, but he has to beat out another guy (Siereveld) who started a couple games on the interior in 2024 when injuries hit. We also could see one of the guards bump out to RT so Siereveld can move back to the interior. I will admit, our OT recruiting has been terrible. We had three OT transfer out this cycle, none of whom had any shot to play.
Since 2021 (start of the Sarkisian Era), the Longhorns have taken 9 DTs, 8 WRs, 6 LBs, 4 CBs, 3 TEs, 2 RBs, 2 DEs, 2 safeties and 2 punters. Even mixed in a QB and K. They have never once taken an offensive lineman in the Portal.
Pretty easy to negatively recruit a 5* OT by pointing out that the school he’s committed to is recruiting two higher ranked 5* OT that they are offering more money to.
Aren’t some of these due to circumstance and recency bias. Caleb never leaves OU if Lincoln Riley stays. Jayden Daniels also lost his coach. Drake Maye stayed all three years at UNC. Bo Nix and Michael Penix were a true transfers that sought a new place although Nix also lost his original coach. If you look at the year before, all of the first round QBs started at their original schools. This year is projected to be the worst QB draft in a while so the fact that each of the QBs were all transfers could be seen as negative with respect to development. I think it’s somewhere in between and some of the QBs this year could be great pros. Also add Lagway unless Napier ruins him which is a high possibility.
