Anybody write in their spare time? Novel, journal, pleasure, pain, anything. I know Jake Barnes does. I've been trying to devote one hour every morning to working on a project. Been my life's goal to pen a novel and finally said fuck it and started. It's sort of an exaggerated story of my travels, each chapter is a different country/city I've visited. Just started Chapter 9 this past weekend, Rio and Buenos Aires. Thesaurus.com is now a bookmarked tab. I struggle telling a story, especially conversations among characters. I'm also still figuring out a theme, right now each chapter is almost its own short story. My thought is to get the "bones" on paper, have all my stories, and then weave them together. Not sure if that's the right approach or not. I've been a lawyer for 10 years and that style is so formulaic and contained, much different from a novel. Thinking about doing some writing courses but still a little apprehensive. No shame here, authors.
I could write for a living if I didn’t have to make money. best advice I can give is to create everything around the plot first. Characters, setting, background timeline, etc. When you have fleshed out those elements, the actual story pretty much writes itself because you don’t have to contrive events to move the plot forward, you can organically create them because your characters will do what they are supposed to do.
We've had threads on this a couple times, here's one: https://www.the-mainboard.com/index.php?threads/writing-group.179553/ There's a Slaw fan that writes novels...@Prospector maybe?
My wife is a literal poet. She’s been getting me to write at least once a month. It’s pretty fun and therapeutic
Being a poet and writing poetry that rhymes would be like being a rapper who starts every song with this structure: "My name is Nug and I'm here to say I love meditation in a major way"
Here’s a custom poem she did for a couple of nerds who love Marvel. The title is taken from the new Doctor Strange movie Spoiler
Absolutely. She does custom work. You just have to do a brief questionnaire. PM if you want more details so you can have sex with your wife
I started as a journalism major before I realized I needed to switch to something else (so glad I did). But I got an internship for a newspaper covering, writing, and sometimes even photographing high school sports. Enjoyed it at first, but it got old real quick. Game articles were too repetitive. And it seemed like they would rather have as many different names in the paper than any interesting articles. I enjoy writing and have two different “books” (stories that one day might be fleshed out enough to earn the name) on my laptop that I’ll build on and add to when I have time and get in the mood. I tend to bounce back-and-forth between my favorite genres when reading/listening to books/audiobooks. Get really into one for awhile and vice versa. So it’s been a slow process. But there’s no deadlines to worry about when it’s just a hobby.
Used to do marketing/pr writing when I worked in college athletics. Occasionally had to write a fluff piece for the school alumni magazine.
Hi, yes, I’ve been a professional writer for nearly 20 years. It’s not nearly as fun as it sounds. Today I got to write 2,500 words about nightmare disorders for a mental health counselor client.
