Sounds like you kinda have it figured out.
Good, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something since this will be my first Apple desktop setup.
Skip the studio display and just get the two Dell 4ks at 599/each. Can't remember the model number; Also highly recommend the new Bluetooth keyboard with Touch ID built into it.
It’s definitely a conspiracy by Apple to brick phones in order to make you buy a new one rather than bad luck on your end.
Same thing has happened to me twice in the last week but I was able to eventually get it back on. I ended up upgrading last night, got 700 for my xs max and free upgrade so I pulled the trigger. I was hoping to last until the end of the year but went ahead and upgraded to the green 13 pro max.
Hoping against hope I can get my XS to last through October/November for next update but you guys are giving me anxiety
I’m still rocking an original X just fine. Battery isn’t great but it’s fine.
My 12 pro max has been acting up. It will act like it has no internet. Wifi or cellular. I have to turn off and on before it connects again. Almost daily. 1.5 yrs old and hoping it’s good to fall.
i bit the bullet and bought a refurbished macbook air with the M1 chip. my other laptop, a '17 model macbook pro, was just never going to make it until Q3/Q4 like the latest reports with its screen issues.
first impression: actual keyboard buttons >>> touchpad.
My X shit the bed and picked up the new green 13 pro. I was never a phone color guy (space grey all day) but this green one is really pretty.
I’ve got this except BenQ monitors for photo editing as that’s pretty much all I do in my free time. I’ve got a different dock for my work laptop and just swap inputs back and forth during work hours. Only complaint is after extended sleep sometimes I have to unplug and replug the usb c monitor as it goes to sleep and won’t wake.
I don’t think M1 needs sleep. I’ve run into a similar problem, so I’ve disabled sleep and use Lock Screen instead. No longer have the issue in bold
My M1 Pro can be closed, asleep, in clamshell mode - I can plug it into my 65W USB-C monitor - wait about 15-20 seconds, then double tap the enter button on the bluetooth keyboard and that wakes everything up. May be because my display is pushing power and waking it up, but that's how I start my Monday mornings when my notebook has been with me over the weekend.
I'm talking about waking from sleep with monitors already plugged in and having one monitor not wake while the other does (as opposed to being asleep and then plugging in a single monitor, which is what you seem to have success with).
I have an M1 Pro for work and I connect two monitors via a docking station. One monitor is via HDMI and the other via USB-C. I can't recall which I have issue with, but when I put the laptop to sleep, often one of the monitors will not wake up (it's the same monitor each time). One solution I've found is to open the MBP, connect the docking station, and then close the MBP. The other solution I've found is to not put the laptop to sleep. When I first encountered the issue, some googling told me that it had to do with sleep and the M1 chip and it was a problem others were experiencing.
Can you daisy chain the HDMI monitor instead via USB-C?
Both external monitors are connected via HDMI. One of the HDMI cables has an HDMI to USB-C adapter that is then plugged into the docking station. The issue relating to one monitor's inability to wake from sleep comes from either the M1, the docking station, the cables, or the adapter IIRC. Google pointed the finger at M1.
Work setup. Me and IT are working with what we were given.
at my work we've run into issues with the latest batches of Dell 4k USBc monitors not waking. was solved by manually installing the latest driver from Dell's website and by having the USB-c cables plugged into the PCs.
just installing the USB-C cables didn't work, just installing the driver didn't work. combo did and has been stable for 2 months now (on about 100 PCs ~200 monitors).
Is the adapter 3rd party or Apple brand? If the straight HDMI to HDMI monitor is waking up but the one running from HDMI->USB C adapter->USB C port on the MBP, I'd fault the adapter. Is it possible to drive the USB-C monitor with a USB C cable and eliminate the adapter?
I’m having issues going directly from the the back of my M1 (USB-C) to the USB-C input on my monitor personally. Multiple different cords. The second monitor is HDMI to HDMI and it wakes up 100% of the time. The USB-C is about 90%. It’s a quick but annoying fix to either reboot or unplug/replug the cord. I’m seeing some docks a peripherals having some odd timeouts for storage devices as well.
I just installed a new caldigit TS4 in the mix last night. I’ll see if that entire hub bricks out instead of the monitor this time.
Just noticed the battery on my early 2015 macbook air says replace now. Been looking at batteries on amazon. Mostly good review but do see some rare issues and some bitching about warranty not honored or bad customer service. Looks like those are around $45. For $129 you can take it to an apple authorized provider (apple store is an hour away) and I guess they have whatever batteries apple uses. I'm guessing they are different than the OEM batteries on amazon. Is it worth going to the apple authorized provider or just buy one off amazon and do it yourself?
I have a very dumb question. I have the 32GB iPad and about 10gb of my storage is messages. I would love to free up space on the iPad but don't want to delete any messages if it effects what is stored on my phone. What should I do?
Take a chance.
I'm thinking I probably have to format the iPad then not have it do iMessage. Or just buy a new one with more storage.
Pick one message you don’t care about and delete it, see if it deletes on your phone.
do you have Messages in iCloud enabled?
Mine does not replicate across devices. Not sure why, but I agree, send yourself a test message and delete to check.
Has to be a way to not replicate iMessage.
side note. Common way cheaters are caught. One spouse has iPad and sees neighbor sexting.
FWIW - I get messages on my phone, ipad and macbook. If I delete a message from one, it doesnt erase it from the other two. I have to do that on those devices.
I have an iPad and Mac and an iPhone. I only get texts on my iPhone. I think it’s Handoff that makes it all be shared. Turn off handoff.
that means you dont have iCloud messages on
if you have it on, you'll get a message that says "deleting this conversation will delete it from all devices, are you sure?"
are you asking how to not get iMessage on other devices?
on your ipad/computer, just sign out of iMessage
I think it will delete from the other devices if you sync your messages across iCloud. If you just forward messages from your phone to other devices you have to manually delete those messages on each device (like you were mentioning).
Snagged an Apple TV 4K the other day. I was previously just using the built-in LG smart TV interface on my C1 but I couldn’t get the Masters app, the MLB.tv app, Direct TV Stream, etc. through it. Gotta say, it’s wildly overpriced for what it is (could have accomplished the same thing with a $50 Roku), but I love it. I’ve slowly been turning into an all things Mac guy, and it’s super nice to have the integration on all my devices.
The remote is cool too, but just seems like it’s gonna get lost all the time. Makes me want to buy one of those remote cases with the integrated air tag holder.
I use my phone as the remote for Apple TV. Much easier and you can type things in much faster when searching - Netflix, Hulu, etc.
Yeah good point. I’ve been using my phone as the remote quite a bit.
Being able to quad box with Fubo and ESPN is worth the money alone for me.
I have a Roku in my office and a TCL in the bedroom with it built in. It gets the job done but I really hate the interface.
Congrats on the ecosystem.
Wish YouTube TV would add that
I did it for the culture
Quad boxing is a must for March madness and the masters.
“It’s wildly overpriced for what it is…but I love it.”
That’s the apple life baby!
pretty sure it’s coming soon
for those with Apple TV, cable service/internet tv (YTTV, fubo, etc) and a home server, I’d recommend checking this out https://getchannels.com/live-tv/
I need to research this. Looks like cheap magic. Have you used it.
yes I’ve used it for almost 2 years. It’s fantastic. It uses the tv everywhere associated with your preferred cable provider, and you can use multiple. I split YTTV with 2 other friends and also have my dad’s xfinity login. Dvr is great because it records the file to a hard drive or NAS. For dvr’d shows there is a one button commercial skip which is awesome. There are some other cool options like adding movies etc from your storage device should you choose. Very user friendly and customizable. I believe they have a trial period so you should check it out. Lmk if you have questions etc. The designers are very active on the forum and also very helpful.
the premise is you or someone you know has cable or OTA antenna?
Vs YouTube TV etc.
or is it an add or if you have YouTube tv and want to aggregate all your services plus DVR?
i want an M1 Apple TV or an Nvidia Orin shield. All these current streamers are a bit underpowered.
I’m not sure an M1 Apple TV is going to be a thing. The rumors have been that the next Apple TV will also be a pretty powerful gaming console, so it’ll probably have a more gaming oriented chip. I’m not sure the M1 is the best for that.
I’ve had my 4K AppleTV for 4 years or so. Never had any streaming issues
Have several different streaming apps. Streamed iptv, stuff from plex. AirPlay. Never notice any issue
yeah I know. It’ll prob be a14 or something to save on cost. I just want something more powerful than the nvidia shield, which is like a 7 year old soc at this point
Peak laziness here, but when do new iPads get announced/released? Wife is ready for a new one and I don't want to get her one at the end of the cycle.
edit: took 5 seconds to google
seems like not much of an update.
