I feel like they get some good scenes here and there out of it, and I love Banks doing work as much as the next, but I'm with you.

Biggest constraint on both Mike and Gus's story progression is not being able to break a Canon we already know. Superlab can't be ready until X date but so much else has to happen first. Same with loving the gale cameo but knowing it's just gonna be an Easter egg till jimmy transforms.

Which, to be fair, got a big kick forward in time for a show that loves to draw it out.

Side not, bravo Gustavo Fring for that barely concealed glee at seeing Hector ogle the nurse and relishing the sight. All the more exquisite knowing how it turns out I think.

The show is currently near the end of the fourth season.

This is pretty much a no-brainer. If you liked Breaking Bad, then you will like Better Call Saul. It's more or less an iron-clad guarantee. The biggest difference between the two shows is that BB was a bit more story-driven, while BCS is a bit more character-driven. I wondered more about how the plot would develop in BB, but I wonder more about how the characters develop in BCS. Which is a bit odd, I guess, because we already know how the story ends for most in the BB/BCS universe.

Definitely methodical though, and they're some of my favorite parts. It's a joy to watch the visual composition of scenes the same/if not moreso than BB.

Finally caught up on this season. Feel like by the end of this series, BCS will end up being a better show than BB. Feels blasphemous to say that but the depth to each character is just so different compared to BB.

When Walt and Jesse abduct Saul on Breaking Bad he assumed it was Lalo who either took him or ordered him to be taken and killed. Saul says he didn't do whatever Lalo would be upset with him for doing and said it was Ignacio (Nacho).

The rest of it is so good that I don't give much thought to the German stuff but yeah, kind of a played out storyline. Gus letting him go or tracking him down and killing him, don't even care, we already know the work gets done. Was kinda sick of him saying Michael all the time too.

Maybe it's just me, but between five awesome seasons of BB and almost four full seasons of an outstanding BCS, I think I'm going to give Vince Gilligan the benefit of the doubt here and wait for him to resolve the German arc before I make up my mind. Sure, it's not exactly the most exhilarating or enveloping subplot, but I think it's pretty darn integral to Mike's development. Werner is teaching Mike to become hardened and detached, which adds weight and meaning to Mike softening up to Jesse years later. Werner has much to do with Jesse.

In addition to the schaddening above, the lab construction angle is perfect for understanding and appreciating how Mike grows into his role in Fring's operation. And it's an awesome look at the value he brings.

Really thought they were going to have to run the semi into a gas station and have that explosion be the cover up for rock blasting

More than slightly underwhelmed when it was taking a speed bump at a high clip

Wonder if this is where the "no half measures' line comes from. I cant remember if Mike tells the story in BB or not.

My memory is shit but seems like the "no half measures" was from when he robbed the cartel's truck and didn't kill the drivers or something (then cartel killed them anyway)

I couldnt remember it but you may be right. All I know is that I feel like they are about to make mike harder after he showed some compassion towards Werner.

Also Gus flipping the gangster switch is amazing to watch.

No half measures was the story from when he was a cop and the guy was beating on his wife. I don't remember it exactly, but I think he had a chance to kill the guy and didn't and then the guy later killed his wife/gf.

He does. It's part of the whole speech to Walt. He explains exactly where it came from. When he was a cop he was always responding to calls about this guy beating the shit out of his wife and it was getting really bad so Mike took him out to a field or something and made it look like he was going to kill him but ultimately just wanted to scare the shit out of him. A week or so later the guy killed his wife.

Though the semi might have suppressed the sound, I think it is likely that the semi speeding through that bump was done more to mask any seismic activity that would register. A semi with a heavy haul traveling at that speed over a bump would register in nearby buildings, especially with sewer lines underneath the road.

Those hatches also actually lifted up just as the truck hit them (effectively holding them down in place)

Love this show but it doesn't come close to BB for me. BB is right there with Sopranos for GOAT television series and had the kind of nerve wracking tension that few shows can duplicate. The Slipping Jimmy to Saul transformation is cool, but Walter White basically became The Antichrist. Whole different level at least to me.

And again, I love BCS. It just feels much lighter in overall tone to me. Which is cool. I can't wait to see the finale.

I give the nod to BB because the story arc was more compelling, and BCS couldn't stand on its own without BB setting the stage. But I could see someone enjoying BCS more, or at least thinking it was better executed from a "technical" perspective.

I was thinking about this too - I (mostly) binged BB and have been watching BCS live. I think that is the best approach for both series. I stayed up til 3 am watching BB episodes on more than one occasion because I couldn't put it down. I don't think I would have done that with BCS. The "slow burn" of that show works better if you watch it live.
