He only had one bad season Probably good for 8+ wins most seasons with Mullen. Careful what you wish for kinda thing
The problem is the seasons got worse and worse and the trendline was continuing to go down. Great playcaller, imaginative coach, horrific recruiter, lazy CEO. He needed to go. Sadly (for us), Billy sucks at some of the same things.
I just feel like if you’re going to fire Mullen, you don’t do it for a coach at ULL. Hindsight 20/20 and whatnot. Keep Mullen until a sure thing is interested
I feel like the only thing Billy is better at than Mullen is recruiting but now they have to dump him and make a splash hire to keep the talent he brought in
I mean, Billy was a good hire at the time. He was 40-12 at UL and had already reportedly turned down Auburn and South Carolina. He’s just not the guy we thought he was.
Go back and look at that 2020 season which is probably his most heralded. Just straight up incompetence on defense. Losses to every good team we played save Georgia. Our o-line coach for those years works at Lowe’s now. Like I’m serious, the hardware store. Stumbled into playing Kyle Trask only due to injury when everyone knew he was the better QB. First coach to lose to Kentucky since I’ve been alive. Didn’t want to recruit at all and fluffed his classes with non-qualifiers. Also got the first recruiting violations in school history for a recruit we didn’t even get.
Hindsight is definitely 20/20, but Dan was angling for an NFL gig hard. When he didn’t get it after 2020, he essentially gave up.
Gonna feel bad for you guys when BOB makes BC respectable again and he’s brought up in a coaching search
Rumor is that both Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley expressed interest but our dumbass AD supposedly zeroed in on Billy from the jump. Who knows though.
Nobody realistically. Some liked Lane but was never going to be hired at that time. We were told Brian Kelly had interest and reached out. Don’t think we could’ve beaten LSU out though.
I definitely buy the Kelly interest. Not so much Lincoln because there were always rumors he was vehemently against the OU to SEC move.
it’s true Lincoln didn’t want anything to do with the SEC and that’s the only reason he left OU in the first place. OU would’ve paid him as much as USC did
In hindsight yeah. At the time Kelly’s teams and recruiting did not seem to be championship level. Was a great move for all parties.
From what I remember, Mullen wanted out. He hates recruting and wanted a shot in the NFL. That call never came so he basically trolled UF into firing him. As for hiring Napier, UF hasn't been able to snag the sure thing splash hire in a few cycles. None of their last 3 hires were their #1 choice. I don't see that changing in round 4 with the turmoil at AD and president Spoiler Here comes Boo to tell me that UF turned down Lincoln Riley in favor of Napier. Edit: he beat me too it again.
Seems like your fans want to revert course from hiring up and coming guys like Muschamp and Billy to settle for BOB and Jimbo. Reading UF boards during the coaching search will be fun
Our fans are depressed and reaching for any branch of competence. No matter how dumb and it is dumb it would be.
That's the same of every fanbase though in all sports. Ex. Team has a hard nosed disciplinarian coach that fails, well it's obviously because he was to hard on the team and out of touch so the next coach needs to be player friendly. Player friendly coach fails, well obviously the team had a country club atmosphere with no accountability. Time to get a disciplinarian to whip the players into shape.
That’s my pick. Assuming he’s learned something from Kirby. In hindsight Lanning should have been the pick but the previous Saban rejects scarred the donors.
I think this is still the way to go. Pulling standing P4 coaches is going to get a lot tougher with the expanded CFP. Especially from the SEC/B1G.
I think the thing is there’s no point anymore pulling G5 coaches for jobs like UF. G5 coaches rather be P4 coordinators these days anyways.
