I like the idea of going out and getting a TE every year from the portal. Seems like TEs are so hit or miss, and some of our best under Saban have been transfers.

I would like the idea of us not portaling that hard unless it’s psycho behavior players like Dickerson and Burton.

I don't think we've even scratched the surface of what the portal will become. I think you will see good players leave pretty good programs for more money and an opportunity to play on the big stage. Free agency and all hell will break loose.

He wasn't. Ideally we should play one of the dozen five stars we seem to have on the roster. But he would be playing over Proctor right now if he was on the roster those sack and rushing numbers would be significantly better. I just like the idea of adding a few guys to raise the floor.

yeah you got to give them a starting spot. there were two up for grabs this year that could have easily gone to a transfer.

That said it ultimately comes down on Proctor being not ready to start day 1 in the SEC. i'm sure we promised him the job to get him to flip. Not sure you can put all that on Wolf though he is the easiest scapegoat.

We should build a team of scouts that go to games at lower programs to evaluate talent so we’re ready to pounce when the portal opens

Steen is on an NFL roster, I mean I'd take that quality for a transfer C and DL right now for next season.

Just checked and said on Dickerson's wikipedia that he was a portal guy Edit: he was also a graduate transfer so I guess both

I also think you could get some small school standouts to come for depth, or at least not with a promise to start. Arguably you may be better off getting noticed for the NFL as a rotation DL than somewhere like Louisiana or UAB. Yeah you won't have the stats but you'll have a better chance to be noticed on tape. I bet Key and Amos fall into this type of player.

I think landing Seaton is very important. Believe he starts at RT next year if we get him. I think he's that good.

Not sure what we have with Talty but if he's not consistent then maybe even look at a kicker because we have been spoiled as shit with Reichard.

That's the thing, I don't think they even have to be as good or contribute as much as those. Even a solid second string type that you get experience and special teams contribution from is probably more valuable than Jones, Reese, Lindsay, or Kirkpatrick junior are ever likely to be (though I'm less bullish about giving Dre's son a scholly).

There are a number of pretty unimpressive looking OL and DL we have as well but evals are so often wrong at those spots that I'm just giving the benefit of the doubt to Saban, Roach and I guess Wolf on them. We need bodies there and we missed on a lot of our top LOS targets so you can't really get away with hoping to fill up on enough of those from the portal or you end up with some fucked up depth on the lines, but I think you can pretty consistently get skill position guys and like linebackers out of the portal going into tampering season blindly that offer more immediate and long-term value than these fringe guys we took to fill up.

Dallas Turner had one last year at about the same spot too on their field. That's also around the area Landon Collins had a pick six against them and Diggs picked up the fumbled for a 100 yard return.

Off the top of my head

2022 - Turner scoop score fumble
2021 - Diggs scoop score fumble 100 yards
2016 - Ronnie Harrison pick 6 off a screen pass (Eddie also ran back a punt?)
    2013 - Landon Collins pick 6
2002 - Gerald Dixon fumble return for TD

Something I was thinking about earlier today: are we pulling for Georgia to win out now?

After the game last Saturday there was discussion about the possibility of us getting left out if we won out, which I think has no shot of happening if we beat them while they're undefeated, but a one or even two loss (unlikely but not impossible for the former) Georgia could potentially muddy things up a bit.

Teams will likely lose and make this irrelevant, and of course we need to get through LSU and voodoo land first, but there is potential for a path with no SEC team in a 4-team scenario this year. The expansion is one year too late.

I don’t think it matters a whole lot. Only way we are left out is if an unprecedented amount of other conference teams finish undefeated.

Remember when tons of folks and the media thought A&M was definitely going to beat us? It's even worse with LSU. They are definitely a better team than us. Their offense is unstoppable. We won't be able to keep up with them. :meh:

How do yall see this game with LSU playing out? Will they have an easy time scoring on us out the gate? Are we going to come out slow on offense once again? Our first half offensive possession and scripted drives have sucked so bad. I don't see Saban allowing us to be so bland and conservative out the gate considering how explosive their offense is. I think we might see a good 1st half offensive performance. I also think LSU has been putting up all these points on crappy defenses. I think they will get theirs but it will be much more difficult. Also our defense is elite in the red zone. We'll do some bending but it will be tough for them in the red zone.

Coming out of the bye we have to show improvement in our early start. Surely it has to be at the top of the list of things we work on with the extra time.

That being said, I hope we win another coin toss and defer again.

It's hard to say. we haven't played very well out of the bye the last few years. We had a very good chance of losing to LSU at home in '21 and last year obviously we all remember what happened. That said, this team does not seem to share the same DNA as the past few teams. This team definitely has the same vibes of the mid 2010 teams and effort and general "give a fuck" has never been the issue for this squad. Also I will say the fact that we had so little penalties last week is very encouraging. I know TFB thought the refs were cheating but in reality we had a disciplined offensive line with pretty good cadence from Milroe that had them in a funk.

So I think we will come out fired up. Especially the defense. I have suspected that Milroe has been nursing a leg injury since Mississippi State so I'm hoping to see a little more explosiveness out of him on the ground. That essentially won us the game in the second half last week. We are a better team than LSU and as long as Milroe doesn't have several turnovers we should win comfortably. I'm sure they will score some points but I think our defense with 2 weeks to prepare should be able to come up with some stops in the second half to seal the game.
