Can we put to bed the rumor that Grant is an idiot? Only an idiot wouldn’t come back to spend another year on the greatest college campus on earth.
Am I missing anybody? Not including Sears just yet but room for 1 more? Returning Players (4) Nelson Dioubate Wrightsell Stevenson Transfers (4) Youngblood Omoruyi Mallette Holloway Freshman (4) Philon Reid Cunningham Sherrell Maybe 1 left for Sears or Ugonna? We could possibly use an extra 5 even with Cliff.
A few of those don't look like they belong on the same roster as the others. I'm looking at you Dioubate and Wrightsell. I guess they are specialists? One is a physical , hard hat, lunch pail type and the other is a sharp shooter. Do those 2 guys belong on a natty caliber team ?
The depth that potentially have available for next year is going to be incredible. We should be able to mix and match any lineup. Having a true 5 is going to help Nelson so much, as well as not force Sherrell to play a role he’s not ready for.
Wrightsell for sure. If Mo is the last guy on the bench then I think I can live with that. I do wonder what Mallette is thinking right about now.
Wrightsell definitely has a spot. He will possibly be a starter. Do I want a guy that averaged 11 ppg on 44% from 3 and 100% from the FT line in this system in conference play? Hell yes Especially with Holloway being a likely boom or bust player and who knows what to expect from a true freshman in Philon. Wrightsell has proven he can flourish in the system.
Agree, but so are Wrightsell, Youngblood and the young kids. Somebody is going to play 7 minutes a night (it may be 17 one night and 3 the next, but math is math). As long as everyone is good with the setup and doesn't care about how minutes shake out then we're in great shape.
Are you kidding me on Wrightsell? If Wrightsell doesn't have a place on a 13-player roster, then we will have the GOAT team.
It seems pretty clear from all parties that know anything that at the very worst they think it's up in the air, and at the very best they feel pretty sure he'll be back. If he does, it's hard to see where Nas or Mo get minutes. And it will be a battle all year between Holloway/Philon to see who gets more minutes in the Sears backup/starting PG depending on how much Sears plays off ball. The good thing is there really aren't any clear slots. The competition for minutes really could be won by anybody at most of these positions. Sears, Nelson and Cliff (assuming) are all clearly going to be major minutes. After that, it's pretty much up for grabs IMHO. Locked In PG/SG > Sears - 32m PF > Nelson - 32m C > Cliff - 25m Point Guard (16-20m) - Holloway - Philon Shooting Guard (28-32m) - Wrightsell - Mallette - Youngblood Forward (3/4) (48-53m) - Reid - Stevenson - Mo D - Cunningham Center (10-15m) - Sherrell
you know, ive seen info that he could go until 7/1 but ive also seen info that he would have to be out by the middle of june. no clue which one is correct.
stands: ***Grant Nelson - Alabama Crimson Tide - Power Forward (on3.com) was a massive domino that fell just now. Can't stress enough how big this was. Giving Alabama some good options in the frontcourt. He emerged as a leader near the end of the year and would expect that to continue next year. Talent and experience. Win-win. Domino 1: They want to add one big man. Clifford Omoruyi - Rutgers Scarlet Knights - Center (on3.com) is on campus, and he's a priority. Despite all the speculation today, this one is still in the air. I've seen Bama out for Cliff or he's a lock; neither seems to be true. Right now, he's getting the red carpet tour. It's going well. Should know more after the visit. North Carolina, Kansas State and Baylor all seem to think they are involved to some degree. Ugonna Onyenso - Kentucky Wildcats - Center (on3.com) is in play but will likely depend on what happens with Cliff. Ugo is in the draft, and it is possible he could stay in. So that has to be factored in, as well, with the chance a team could lose him late. But we have confirmed communication and interest from the Ugo side. The Bama staff feels confident they will land a rim protector. Domino 2: Mark Sears - Alabama Crimson Tide - Point Guard (on3.com). This one is simple and could take a while. The general feel is he will "likely" be back. However, there is no guarantee as it depends entirely on the NBA feedback. And as Bama fans have seen, that can go either direction. But no matter what, with the addition of Aden Holloway - Auburn Tigers - Combo Guard (on3.com) and Labaron Philon - Link Academy - Point Guard (on3.com), Bama has point guards for next season. As we've noted, Oats and staff were not going to get caught without like last year with the late defections. ***As things stand now (without Sears or a rim protector), the Bama roster is a top five group most likely. Others might try to convince Bama fans otherwise, but it's a strong group filled with talent with experience and young talent. A+ job by the staff with some things still to be decided.
Shit didn't realize asking about Wrightsell was a mortal sin. Apparently didn't watch him enough last year. Fucking touchy up in here. Sheesh!
I think it’d be dumb to not be somewhat concerned about. If Oats and the staff feel he’s in good enough shape to play next year then I’ll trust their judgement. Being deeper he hopefully won’t be relied on as our only good defensive guard.
I can’t even state how big it is that we land a rim protector. Being able to funnel guys to a rim protector and Nelson roaming to swat stuff is going to change the total look for us defensively. can’t wait to get back to having a lot of length and athleticism on defense. Cliff with Sherrill backing is just ridiculous. Nelson starting and Stevenson coming off the bench as a sophomore could be especially deadly. Man what a job Oats has done with this roster. And we STILL haven’t announced the other assistant coach either.
I used to strictly abide by the "trust the coach evaluation" mantra as our coach was one of the great defensive evaluators in the history of the sport. That no longer applies.
