Forgot to post in here that I just ordered the 1zpresso jx pro. I think I jacked up my lido 3 during a deep clean somewhere and was desperate for something that wasn't prone to misalignment

Well I broke my French press this morning. Any suggestions? Should I go pour over?

What other equipment do you own or plan to buy (grinder quality, scale, gooseneck, etc.)?

Plan to get a decent burr grinder for sure. Got a scale. I hear my water up in the microwave so I’m not sure I’ll be getting a kettle

If you don’t want to get a kettle, don’t go pour over. Also, don’t be afraid to get a kettle and go pour over.

There are electric kettles that work fine. If you are getting a kettle for pour over, make it a gooseneck.

It definitely not cheap but the fellow stagg ekg is so damn nice.

The ability to use 198-205F water really helps quality of the brew and the option to hold a temp for an hour is huge help

I got my wife an electric gooseneck on amazon for under $25. That would be a huge quality of life upgrade. From there, my personal preference would be:

    1. Clever dripper (easiest, highest floor, no kettle needed)

    2. Kelitta wave (higher ceiling and floor, needs a kettle. I prefer the bigger 185 over the 155).

    3. V60 (Highest ceiling and lowest floor. I'd only go this route if you're interested in working towards the best cup. Needs a kettle).

    4. Aeropress (doesn't need a kettle. Subpar results in my opinion, but a lot of people like it).

Bonavita is standard if Fellow Stag is out of budget - not sure if the OXO gooseneck is back on the market but my mother in law has it and she likes it.

Imo variable kettles are less important than I used to believe. I still use one but could easily do without now that I can approximate temps off-boil by time.

All that is to say that if there is a budget that is split between a kettle and grinder, I would go cheap on the kettle and spend more on the grinder 100 out of 100 times.

    Portability (fits inside an Aeropress)
    Easy grind adjustments
    Easy to Clean
    Grinds beans quick & efficiently

    * Portability is key - it’s a significant upgrade on the Porlex... I probably would have gotten the Comandante, if I just wanted something for the home

Yup, I think that's the one I have. I'd say it does a pretty solid job grinding evenly. It's definitely better than a Kitchenaid one that I started out with, but not sure how it compares to other expensive ones.

Side topic: Are Chemex filters going to be out of stock until the end of time? I'm getting sick of using these reusable cloths ones I have. Has anyone tried the stainless steel ones?

Feels like size would be the differentiater there. If you make more than 1 cup at a time, I'd go french press (or chemex). If not, I'd go aeropress. I personally think fp makes better cups, but it is awesome to travel with. I have a little kit with a small scale and a grinder that can fit in the aeropress that's pretty handy

Not sure how much coffee you go through but I have a primary, reliable sub and then Trade to supplement so that I have something on hand all the time. Shipping's been a pain because they all rely on USPS and unfortunately, that's the bottleneck.

23.5g per day, so a 12oz bag every 2 weeks is fine.

how much you drinking? Reads like you own a fucking plantation

edit: for some reason I read primary and reliable sub as two different bags. Carry on

Lol. 3 double shots a day (54g) Most days between the missus and I. Sometimes, maybe 4. So a 12oz bag a week.

But I've been buying 2lb bags as the "primary" - picked up Onyx monarch last week as they had a 10% off on bulk bags -and a 12oz bag every 3 weeks from Trade to rotate.

This may have been covered before so apologies for not reading 43 pages. Is there a coffee grinder out there that will grind to espresso level that is not going to break the bank.

Hand grinders are the most cost effective. The cheapest I've seen that is of good quality is the 1zpresso jx pro. It's been a while since I've looked at electric, but maybe you could get away with the virtuoso if you were opposed to manual? I'd do some searching on home barista or r/coffee before going electric, just to avoid any disappointments with a higher priced grinder

Idk. Maybe $100. Could go more if necessary. I have been buying really good quality beans for years now but the roaster’s coffee shop has a grinder that does not quite grind small enough for a true espresso grind (they do their espresso grind at the roasting shop and bring it over in bulk for their machine). So I could see it paying for itself pretty quickly since I always go on Sat & Sun to splurge on the good stuff @ $4 for a double.

With that budget, I would highly recommend the jx pro. I have it for pour over and can attest to its quality. I really think you'd be disappointed with anything cheaper.

Eta: what machine are you using?

I am kind of turned off on manual, I do enough manual work every day as it is.

This is what I have. I know, nothing fancy at all but a huge step up from the Nespresso that I was using. Have had it almost 3 years and have signs that it is almost done so I will upgrade at that position when the time comes.

In the under 100 electric range, two options to look into are the capresso infinity and the encore. Sometimes there are deals on refurbed encores at the baratza site (https://www.baratza.com/shop/refurb).

Not sure how they are for espresso, but the reality is that an average grinder + freshly ground beans may be better than an above average grinder + preground.

I like JX Pro at that budget (well perhaps a little more) but it gives you great range + consistency.

If you're using a pressurized basket on your machine, a baratza encore may suffice (they recently had a restock on refurbished grinders) but know that they're not really meant for Espresso.

You could also look for a used Breville Smart Grinder Pro - it's better option than Baratza if you want espresso. For pourover & french press, baratza is a better bet.

I wouldn't touch Capresso with a 10 foot pole but that's just me.

Ultimately, JX Pro is perhaps the best way to go, if you don't mind the manual part and if you're not pulling multiple shots a day
