I’d have more privilege most places actually. In Europe there’s many places I could live where I could do anything I’d ever want. I don’t care about privilege other than earned privilege.

by almost all measures americans are materially worse off now than they were 40 years ago, inequality is higher, wealth accumulation among middle class and down has declined (even moreso among minority groups), social mobility has declined dramatically, debt has never been higher while also being required to even grab the bottom rung of social mobility, younger generations have worse outlooks than their parents, on and on. there's been some small material step forwards but they've been countered by dramatic regression on others (small healthcare expansion, but then dramatic social welfare destruction so overall health outcomes aren't better as just one example).

white people are so fucking mad on twitter that fuck the fourth is trending

talking about they’ll buy us plane tickets to other countries. i think it’s lost on them that if a lot of people could get a plane ticket and guaranteed citizenship in another country they WOULD leave

i know i would today tbh i fucking hate living here and everything it stands for

and yes the american dream is a myth, i can predict with near certainty your income based on your parents or the zip code you were born in. obviously there's exceptions that hit the lottery but our social mobility is near bottom among peer countries. you are born into the economic caste you'll likely die in.

Right, I think it’s always been expected that we would just muscle ourselves through a pandemic and just attribute it to “the American work ethic, RIP to the fallen heroes who died”. Meanwhile elected officials will turn the memory of preventable deaths to some form of quasi-martyrdom while we demand people live back to “normal” or starve

like it’s totally asinine that we are trying to continue sports right now

So my Indian buddy Kumar that came over here on a fucking boat packed with immigrants with no money to his name didn’t have endless opportunity? He now owns four hotels and twenty or so gas stations. When he got here he lived on the floor of a gas station he worked at while saving money to open his first store. It takes work not handouts but the opportunity is endless here.

Clemson’s first soccer coach that won two national championships immigrated here with absolutely nothing but what was on his back. Ibrahim was my club coach. When he died he owned the two best Clemson stores, eight apartment complexes, tons of land, and more than a dozen ferraris including 2 F40s. You can look up articles about his wife racing Ferraris. I know quite a few immigrants who came here for the endless opportunity and took great advantage of it

its not all or nothing, there have been many cultural and social gains regarding things like gay rights, but then again we've gone backwards on voting rights, etc.

but theres endless charts showing the economic situation of the average american was much better decades ago

Telling “I have a successful immigrant friend” stories probably doesn’t work that well when you’re supporting a guy building border walls, caging babies, and shutting down visa programs.

Being proud to be an American is like having white pride, of black pride, or anything you have literally no control over. I get the idea of “pride marches”...but I’ve always thought they should use a different word than pride.

gay, black, American...you were born into that. Be proud that you’ve fought for equality if you’re one of the former things...but just being proud to be one of them has always been weird to me. Be proud of surviving growing up black in America, being the firs person in your family to go to college, proud of the people that raised you for fighting through poverty to give you a chance, etc. all of that is something you or the people directly around you had an effect on.

    Strange rant, sorry.

with that attitude sure. It’s why the only time I’ve ever had white pride has been at the blm protests of all places. Seeing all the white people coming out to support and protest for better treatment for their fellow Americans that face oppression daily. Most whites either have money and are dicks or stuck at the bottom trying nothing new and having zero ambition whining and moaning about how the system is why they’re stuck.

    not strange.

so for at least the black/gay ones, I think there’s something beautiful in being proud to live in an era where you can be that minority without risking death or harm. Wasn’t that long ago gay bars were getting broken up by the cops, or laws were passed prohibiting black jazz clubs from allowing dancing

my black buddy led them on a police chase, threw cocaine out the window, thought he lost them and pulled into Wendys to order some food. They blocked him in and arrested him. I hooked him up with my lawyer (he paid) and he didn’t serve any jail time. There’s payment plans for those that say most minorities/poor can’t afford a defense. The defense team is near the overall price of a guilty verdict. Around here as long as you don’t injure someone, have insurance covering the property damage, and hire a lawyer any race/sex/background can get out of any crime.
