I live in West Michigan, about 30 miles from Grand Rapids, which I would assume would be the closest city with rescues. Can I ask why rescuing is so preferred? I mean are dogs so overpopulated that there are tons that aren't rescued? It seems like if breeders can charge several hundred dollars, there wouldn't be so many readily available at a fraction of the cost. Forgive me if I missed something obvious or seem ignorant. I literally know nothing except what I have been reading online, but that's more about fit, temperment, size, energy level, etc.
because the number of euthanized dogs/cats could be drastically reduced if more people were willing to adopt a pet instead of running to a breeder to throw a bunch of money to an industry that often does not adhere to the best practices
no need to apologize. I don't know the situation in Michigan, but yes in Florida and Georgia, there are thousands of dogs put down every year because municipal shelters are overfilled and can't take any more. I'll get some stats but yes its a horrible problem.
But sparkle stickers on a dogs nose seems like a douche move to me. Chloey is not a fan of anything on her nose. She can see that shit man.
it was a chick who groomed her, donated her services to the group, we let her do whatever she wanted.
Only 1 out of every 10 dogs born will find a permanent home. The main reasons animals are in shelters: owners give them up, or animal control finds them on the street. Homeless animals outnumber homeless people 5 to 1. Each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed every year because shelters are too full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes. Act as a publicist for your local shelter so pets can find homes. Sign up for Shelter Pet PR. Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.

My wife and I bought both of our dogs. We had no idea much like petere1588 I can't say I regret it because I love both of those rascals more than I could ever express. With that said, after reading up on all things dog after getting mine and joining this thread, my wife and I have already agreed that for our next dog we will go to the most overcrowded shelter in Birmingham and get the dog that has been there the longest and love the fuck out of him/her
That's how my last family dog was. We went to the shelter and got one that nobody wanted. He was an amazing dog, smaller lab mix who was pretty perfect. My two rescues are pretty perfect too. Not sure why, if you are just getting a family pet, you would need to go to a breeder.
My wife specifically wanted a maltipoo and there aren't too many maltipoo shelters around. I wanted a Great Dane and I didn't even think to look in a shelter. Now I realize that unless you want a show dog or a designer breed, you can rescue just about any other type of dog. Our family dog growing up was a rescue and the muttiest of mutts, a real mudblood, but she was amazing and I miss her
We should just let stray dogs run free. Walking around amongst more dogs is a good thing. And if they organize, revolt and take over...well then I for one welcome our new dog overlords.
Understood dude, thanks for letting me know, let me know when you think you are ready and I can help if you'd like.
Millie's bladder and bowels are the fucking enemy right now. She's on 2 prednisone a day and just freely pissing and shitting wherever she can. I think she's making a conscientious effort to do it in low traffic areas of the house but it's still super fucking frustrating. I take her out hourly and if she doesn't go while we're outside, I know that she's just weaseled her way somewhere in the house to do it. The fiancé is working against me, though. She's just like "she needs more water! Let me fill the bowl to the brim!" and she won't believe me when I say she doesn't need as much as she's trying to get. Fuck heartworms.
We always had pure flat coats or berners but by chance found our plott from a rescue. She is a sweetheart and the calmest. Sure she is missing 1/2 a paw but it was a great fit for us and her. I will forever rescue from now on
i dont know about the shitting part but yeah steroids like prednisone will make them extra thirsty and as a result make them piss all of the time
was emailed this today and figured I'd share with the Dog Crew - some good info in here 7 Rattlesnake Tips that could Save Your Dog’s Life
AIP I just saw a new pic of Bella the Plott/Lab mix, I know you can't but I figured you would want to see her. Just noticed the vine making a penis on the fence behind her lol.
Yeah this one will make you rage too, apparently the story is the person that sold the woman the dog in the pictures also sold her that dog's sibling, under the premise that they would be lonely without each other. Apparently this woman has 3 kids and very little yard, the fuck did she think she was going to do with two giant dogs? Fucking people.
Not sure, we might be doing the foster shuffle over the weekend until he gets somehwere he can stay for a bit, so we will know more then. You interested?
somewhat intrigued. Lyla, who I posted about a couple weeks back will be moving our when my oldest moves out in July, and we will be back down to 1. Wife says she does not want another, but a puppy that is out of full on puppy stage might be doable.
Ok, I'll see what I can find out. There's no charge to apply with the group so maybe fill one out. http://www.thepixelfund.org/dog-adoption-application-2017.html Also just found out it is a girl, not a boy, not sure if that matters to you.
Connor Norman I forgot to ask, you said your sister was looking for a puppy, was she interested in Duke?
Ok, at this point we know she has been living in a home with a family, so we can assume she is somewhere along the path to being trained, but we won't know until this weekend at the earliest when she gets to her first foster home.
The struggle is real my man, I want to take one or two home every fucking weekend. I need a damn farm to support my dog habit.
Fafa fofo where do you live? If you are close and want to try to set up a meet and greet with her, I can help make it happen.
