I did it with my first rescue pup in college. She had incredible self control and would only graze a little here and there.
My family does it with their two Boston terriers and it's fine. Of course my mom also lives to give those dogs treats so they're being smart and saving room.
My mom's old dog used to graze. His food would sit out for hours and he'd eat whenever he was hungry. Scheduled eating is appropriate for some, but not all. My labs would definitely eat until they popped.
This is my heeler mix too. I feed him at the same time as the other two, but he eats a little and then will go back and finish it when there is nobody at home for him to watch or interact with. About the only time he will sit down and eat the whole thing is if he's starving because we've been out hiking all day or something. I did use scheduled feeding and making him wait for release to eat when I first got him to help him learn some structure and his pecking order with the other dogs while we were trying to break him of the aggression he came home from the shelter with.
I had a dog client that ate out of a dog food bag that their petsitter had left in the backseat with them
My two get their wet food on a schedule but have a big bowl of dry to graze from during the day. Oddly enough the only time they both sprint to the bowl and chow down like the end of the world is coming is when they're told to get on the stairs so we can harness them up for their walk. They run to that bowl like someone is going to steal it while they're pissing on every blade of grass in the neighborhood. It's weird.
I wonder if we should try mixing in wet food. He was on a schedule, but then he wouldn’t eat it. So we just leave his bowl out for whenever he does feel like eating. I really just don’t like sending him to daycare on an empty stomach, but we can’t force him to eat. Figure if he’s hungry, he’ll eventually eat.
I am team Schedule, wife is team 24/7 access (other than night time when the pup is crated). So we compromised and leave 2 big bowls out all the time. Morning bowls are emptied right after first out morning potty trip, at which time my wife refills both bowls. the the bowl remains full till I get home and they eat it real quick like I'm gonna take it. My wife immediately refills it, and that bowl sits there till the next morning. I swear she thinks they are going to starve to death. She is constantly telling the kids to fill their bowls and the girls eat at the above schedule almost like clockwork.
What are your feelings on blue buffalo? That's what blue was on when we got him and we haven't switched yet.
Tried searching this thread, but couldn't find much on this subject. Anyone try homemade dog food and have a good recipe? Use a supplement at all or alternate options other than kibble? My dogs barely eat their dry dog food and love this homemade dog food. Just really hard to find a good recipe that includes supplements or at least the right nutritional balance dogs need. Only thing I found so far is Azestfor and Dinovite as options that include recipes with them.
Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream is the food Wrigley has been on since he was a couple months old. No issues and his coat looks great. For those of you with older dogs, look into cbd oil to drop onto their food. If you would like a recommendation I know someone here in TN that is making it and has some of the highest standards for purity.
Our living room opens up into the kitchen and it’s pretty big. We played chase the ball for 2 hours She still is in high gear
We are switching from puppy food to this exact food next week. We stayed on puppy food a little longer than usual but this guy just kept growing.
My dog was only on puppy food for about a month after I got him at 6 weeks. We just watered it down to get it soft then gave it to him. I have not been happier with a brand of pet anything than I am with TotW.
Taste of the Wild was one of the higher recommended ones for Huskies, but we can’t find it around us. We use Wellness Core. When we make our own: Sweet potatoe Carrot Peas Rice Ground turkey Eggs
I feed my pups Merick raw infused. It cleared up Flash’s skin issues and their coats are soft as fuck. Thought about going call of the wild but can’t think of a reason to switch except maybe price.
got some "moist and meaty" food toppers for Tosu. he ate his food up this morning. we'll see how long it lasts. i probably just need to be a better dog dad and wake up earlier to get him some exercise in the morning to work up an appetite. after daycare all he does is sleep so i'm sure he's not that hungry in the mornings.
Haven't talked about her since we pulled her, but our foster Bianca has been on cage rest the last four weeks, trying to avoid an FHO. Didn't work, so she had the surgery today. She fell asleep on my lap while we were driving to the vet's office this morning. Doc called me this afternoon and said she did well, the neck below the ball shattered when they tried to remove the head so it required some extra cleanup but nothing that caused her any more trauma. Get to pick her up tomorrow. So those of you whose pups have had FHO's, what can I expect from rehab? She has to be on cage rest for another 6 weeks, do they typically have to do PT?
Dogs eating poop. Vet said its natural. Its just weird that is all of a sudden started. He has food allergies so makes me think he isnt getting the nutrients he needs. Gonna try putting meat tenderizer in his sisters food, supposedly this makes the poop taste bad. Might try adding some pumkin or something to his diet to try to keep it in his gut a bit longer.
I try and do the raised bowl thing with my 9 month old lab by setting her bowl on a step up by the back door She just jumps up and stands on the step next to the bowl
i always thought it would be better for the dog, but my fiance brought up the point that their natural instinct would be to eat their prey off the ground.
Haven't posted in about 5 years since we put our husky down. We've had Juneau 3 years now. She's a relative to our last one. She loves her cage, plays fetch, and barks when she wants something. Huskies don't do any of those things. She has unlimited energy so I try to run with her when I can but it doesn't do much. With the kids they ride their bikes and I let her pull me/ run with me while I'm on roller blades. Great with the kids and really called down after the second year. Kids wanted to name her Oreo because of her nose markings looking like an Oreo. Just out being a husky on the deck table. Heard some noise down stairs while I was getting ready. Came down stairs and found her looking for her breakfast.
We have raised bowls, not sure what it does but they look nice and the wife likes them. I also have a friend who uses the bowl types below to slow her dog's eating down. Again, no idea what any of this really does scientifically.
granted he's only 8 months, but our boy isn't a huge fan of his cage. he doesnt cry or whine much, but lately has been a little bit when we leave him in there. he's terrible at playing and loses interest really fast. he loves day care, and idk if he's going to have any energy left to exercise once spring comes around lol. the only time he barks is when he's outside and sees something, or wants in.
As Jax Teller said, bite the bullet and pay for this one. Get insurance and when the pup’s other ccl goes out have insurance pay for it. That’s what I’m doing. The tplo surgery for my 7 year old lab went great and I made sure I followed the rehab guidance. I’d say the biggest improvement we saw was about week 8-10. We’re 9 months removed and she’s back to 10 miles a week.
Westinn kennels in Wentzville. 3 week board and train there was half the price of a two week program in nashville. And the trainer he will be with has a ton of experience with Belgians.
I grew up in StL, but I live in Chicago, homie. Good luck on the training though. Let us know how it goes.
Going back to the vet for the surgical consult in 2 weeks, they wanted to see him after he had a month on anti-inflammatories and no running to make a complete assessment. The atrophy appears to have stopped and he's walking without a limp, running up the stairs.. but just today I caught him running down them while never letting his left rear leg touch the stairs. I think it's a foregone conclusion. Going with the TPLO option if that's the case.
She only eats meats and cheeses as far as human food.. but she likes to hunt the food she's not going to eat anyway for reasons.
