Just beat Godrick last night, one of the craziest boss designs ever, love it. I'm probably over-levelled for where I am but being a Souls noob and after sucking at Bloodborne, I'm good with it.
Stormveil is just an amazing castle/dungeon, incredible design.

Just had my first "Souls" moment of rage.
The Sellia Crystal Tunnel... i lost probably 40K runes and at least a few hours trying to get to the boss and then he is a fucking nightmare... really wanted to chuck my controller at the wall

You may have gone from being over-leveled for Stormveil to being under-leveled for Caelid. IIRC Caelid is down the list in like the #8-9th "area" of difficulty. Going northwest past Stormveil to that entire area up until the plateau that's partially gate-kept is more level-appropriate and then you circle back to Caelid IIRC as the last part of the southern half of the map before progressing.

This is the basic guideline. Forgot that you do a decent amount of underground shit also before Caelid.

Thanks for the heads up, plan on doing Liurnia now as you suggested.
Cannot even fathom how big this game is, Limgrave and Stormveil themselves is bigger than a lot of games

I actually went there very early in the game because of a fake treasure chest trap that took me there... ran away screaming at that point of course.
Then I went back after I beat everything at Stormveil... yeah didn't know Caelid was the name of the region.

I just got it for PS so I could play with some friends. Doing Stormveil and god damn what a brilliant place.

Definitely give it another go. It draws heavily from BB (Bioshock, too) but it is anything but light. I might even say it's the best Soulslike I've ever played. The central hub area and level design are both really well done, bosses all feel unique and are difficult but fair, and the soundtrack and audio are great. There will for sure be different things from this game that start getting included in other soulslikes.

The weapons all come in two parts, and you can change the handles of each (minus boss weapons). Each handle has different light/heavy/charged attacks that completely change up how it feels/plays. You also can change your mechanical arm out to do different things. I'm using the electric one, but there's one with a grapple weapon, a flamethrower, one that sets mines and traps, and a bunch more I haven't tried.

The healing system is good, as well. Once you're out of flasks, you can constantly fill the empty one up by dealing damage. Hitting enemies after taking damage also allows you to recover a portion of your health.

Oh I wasn’t saying BB Light as a bad thing. Moreso it felt like BB but not as dark and gorey. I’ve played a few hours now and really like the customization options in the game both the weapons you mentioned and the skill tree. Bio-arm feels like they took straight from sekeiro, which is also a good addition.

Decided to put down Starfield altogether and run thru this game instead

You don't need to restart anything. Leveling is completely up to you regardless of your starting "build" and the lower level ones just give you more freedom to put +1s in the attributes you actually want instead of wasting early levels on ones that you're punting (ie - some builds will put 0 into Arcane/Intelligence/Faith because they're not going to be casting). If you just want to start with something that's doesn't feel as weak in the first 2-3 hours of the game I'd pick one that has high Vigor and Strength/Dex because those three will generally get at least ~10 no matter what build you're doing.

But in the end after you're done with like 2% of the game, you'll be leveled up more than you would with one of those beginner classes and would have the attributes in the categories you actually want them in.

For a first-time souls player though I'd probably say if you were gonna start over to go Samurai solely because it starts you off with the best beginner weapon in the game IMO and doesn't waste many early levels on non-essential attributes.

Vagabond also makes a strong case bc high vig/str/dex and low faith/int/arcane.

One thing to make note of on attributes - if you're not a primary caster character, those three faith/int/arcane are mostly only used to get the lowest # level required in them to use different melee weapons, ie - if a sword requires 20 strength and 10 arcane to use.

And you can respec your character attributes (beginning with your base class #s you picked) about 1/4 of the way through the game if you find a weapon that you really love and need a different attribute combo to use. Or if you get to a point where you want to completely change from melee > caster or vice versa.

TLAU adderall post. I ended up restarting with the confessor. I like the feel already and came with a 100% damage blocking shield. Ended up fighting the main militia guy at the very beginning that was kinda tough. Got some decent armor off him. Just got my horse.

Level up often at the beginning. Roll a hell of a lot more than you are. Take fights one on one don't walk into 5 dudes. Part of these games is learning how enemies will attack you and going for hits only when they aren't going to attack. Can't just run up and start smashing the attack button and assume you'll kill them. Keep your shield up and watch your stamina bar, it'll block incoming damage but take down your stamina to where you can't attack. Once it clicks, it clicks but you need to get a feel for the basics. It's not skyrim or something, it's a challenge but you'll get it if you keep at it. Maybe watch some beginner tips and combat tips videos on YouTube.

oh and if someone says "git gud" or criticizes you for not playing the game in a tougher manner, tell them to die and keep doing it that way. not everyone should put themselves in a tiny box just to beat the game the hardest way possible. use cheeses, use summons, whatever. your enjoyment of the game will only be better unlike the sadists who whip themselves the entire time for their own personal glory that no one will care about or share in.

Also you can improve your damage by upgrading your weapon so at the beginning leveling into damage stats isn’t as important. Level into health and stamina so you can stay alive longer

thats been my strategy so far. Problem with the cave is I didn’t really have a choice. The zombie chimps just rolled up on me.

Is there a trick to parrying? I really really suck at it to the point where it’s basically a detriment.

i've always sucked at parrying and have 100% elden ring, dark souls 1 and 3, and bloodborne. they say its a requirement but i've gotten by without doing it well. trick is just learning when they'll attack and hitting the button to parry right then...tough window. probably some videos that could teach you better...

i would sneak a bit more and look for other angles of attack or perhaps some crowd control type things - toss a throwing knife from a distance to get one of the chimps attention and bring them forward to you so you can attack one at a time. or you can do sorcerer stuff and get the glintstone arc thing that just sends a wave out that can hit multiple targets at once. catacombs just northwest of the church you first go to might be a nice little dungeon to start in to get a better feel than dealing with the chimp folk.

I feel like the one thing Elden Ring did different than the souls games was making parries less important. I honestly don't know if I parried 10 times the entire playthrough. They kinda buffed the Riposte attack to the point where you don't need it. Just block > counter for most of the early game.

I'd follow the paths in the first area to find stuff and then just kind roam the unexplored areas of the map you're bound to find something there. There's very few "wasted spaces" on the entire map... some kind of dungeon or enemies or something to do pretty much anywhere you go. You should have the entire starting land mass explored (there's a boundary to the east that's denoted by the area turning red that's a lot higher level difficulty) before going to the castle. That includes the southern part across the bridge with the smaller castle/fort and the island below it

Also... nobody has said yet and it's the beauty of that game - you can just hop on your horse and ride straight past groups of enemies if you wanna explore somewhere but they're killing you. It was definitely the preferred strategy for that big ogre part that you mentioned

Post a couple pages back I did for our other 1st timer that gives you an idea of what level you should and what level your weapons should be prior to entering each area + the other you should do them in to avoid wasting a lot of time and blood pressure potentially attempting an area that's 2x levels higher than you

yeah on my first playthrough i followed the fextra guide / game progress map.

it'll spoil you a bit on all the locations and what's going on map-wise with the game, so you may want to avoid a bit, but i think following the game progress written guide by fextra is a good call to avoid going somewhere you're not really meant to be that early.

Guns I'm pretty sure this was the video I used to basically "get my guy up to speed" at the very beginning of the game. Guy doesn't spoil anything or give you "tricks" or any kind of late-game OP shit. Just riding around the first starting area picking up some items that make the early game not as impossible, ie - extra healing potions and potions heal more, lamp so you don't carry torches, cookbooks that you need for early game essentials, and a little map exploration.

    Highly recommend.

One word of advice here. Try every boss straight up at least a few times before summoning a spirit of any kind to help you. they're really useful in boss fights where there's more than 1 boss at the same time. But once you start upgrading them different summons get OP really quick to where you can beat a lot of bosses in the early-mid and early into the late game on the first try without taking a hit. most of the end-game bosses yaoface at them but yea - summons are broken for at least 2/3 of the game.

Not the same as summoning an in-game story ally. If you see one of the (I think Blue) summon sparkly lines across the ground in the area just before a boss or in the boss area off to the side - summon them because you did something right to get them there and not OP. 3-4 boss fights they're practically mandatory

ate some edibles and beat the first big carnival boss in Lies of P. Didn't turn the game off for 5 more hours after. Game really takes off about an hour into it once you hit the Kratz hotel. The Venigni factory is goooooood. Think I finally turned it off when I got to him and just have the massive guy to take out.

What weapon combos we rolling with?

Was using the stock balanced sword for a while. Started using the Booster Glaive Blade + Krat Police Baton handle because I like the quick moveset on that handle for it's charged attack. Not a ton of damage but breaks big dudes stance at a good clip. Also baton handle sword art is over the top slash so you don't hit walls instead of people. Ash of War is nice for closing a gap and getting a couple strong hits in
