We need a thread where we can just vent about video games and our online experiences. prerecordedlive and I were discussing how Sniper Elite v2 had one of the coolest mechanics with it's slow motion x-ray kill cam, but instead of focusing on sneaking around to find that perfect place to shot they just give you a shit load of enemies, and turned the game into a turkey shoot, so I went on this rant. I blame the gaming community of next gen systems. Nobody wants to play a game unless there is action 24/7 like COD or Halo. Gamers these days don't want to spend 10-20 minutes sneaking around till they find that perfect set up to shoot from. They want an enemy at every turn, and to be able to kill as many possible enemies as they can. I hate this current gaming generation because they have ruined video games especially online multiplayer. All games now a days cater to the casual gamer that don't want to take time to learn the game, and truly become good at it. They just want to be able to pick up the game, and instantly be good at it and with the addition of perks/ choose your own weapon they can do that. Gone are the games that say here is what you get, and if you don't learn to master this weapon or game you will be crushed without mercy. Another tragedy of this gaming generation is that if the game says single player only it won't sell well unless it was a blockbuster title or a sequel that was on the xbox or ps2, ect. Games like Darksiders, Dark Souls (It had co-op multiplayer but was still basically a single player game), Shadows of the Damned, The Witcher 2, Dragon's Dogma, ect all had decent sales, but all those games got a 8.5 out of 10 or higher by gamespot, game informer, ign ect. It sucks to watch games like COD break sales record.
DAY 1 FUCKING PATCHES, every game now has this huge patch you have to download before you can even play the game, so much is wrong with the video game industry now from all the Season Passes, Paid DLC, and tons and tons of microtransactions.
This piggybacks on BR's point, but I have a huge problem with "MMO's" of today. Was watching a twitch stream of the Division yesterday just to make sure I wasn't going to make an impulse buy just so I didn't feel like I was missing out, but the caster is complaining about 'the grind' and how he has 10 hours in and is "only" level 18 (out of 30). You know, there have been some MMO's that specifically waste your time, Lineage 2 and a good deal of the korean/japanese ones are guilty of this, but even going back to DaoC or vanilla WoW, you had to put in a lot of time learning your class before even attempting PVP or you would get rolled. The last one to really get it right was Mythic with Dark Age of Camelot, if you like the fantasy fiction MMO genre, 3 side based PVP zones. Each realm had 12 classes that were not shared, so had 36 specific character options and had to learn a certain way to fight pretty much all of them. Just having 3-4 inter-changable classes and making a zone where it's frag based PVP just doesn't do it for me. All just feels really shallow and I can't get into it. There was something really awesome about rolling a character, leveling all the way up, finding a class that is kicking your ass and being like "I want to do THAT" and going through the process again rather than just a quick respec and grab some other gear.
I would much rather have all of these things than have flawed/glitchy games be shipped with no way of fixing them.
Just stop shipping flawed glitch games imo. The medium should be beyond that, not progressively getting worse
Madden 16 is a joke and the whole franchise has been in a steady decline since EA was gifted the entire NFL gaming rights.
Those things have been prevalent in gaming since the beginning. Now that coding is far more complex you expect that to go away? Lol, no. It's just not possible to do enough testing to find and fix everything before release. Millions of unpaid testers > dozens of paid testers. Just be glad we're in an era where everything does eventually get fixed.
I get that there are gonna be issues that come up over time that need to be addresed, but reb is talking about DAY 1 patches. That means that the game was shipped with known problems. That's fuckin bullshit
My gamer rant is that there are not nearly enough story-driven games. I want more Bioshocks. I want more The Last of Us. I want to feel invested in games that I play. I don't care if it's a 15-20 hour game. I want to feel emotions when I play.
Probably because it's easier to patch then rewrite millions of discs that were likely shipped well before some of these issues were discovered. I dont like it either but there must be a rationality for doing it that way.
LOL must be. I'm beginning to see that I am the ultimate gaming critic while you are the great apologist. You probably enjoy yourself more tbh
Fuck EA all around. Somehow screwed up Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the entire Bioware line. Sports games have been crap (FIFA getting worse every year), haven't even bothered with Madden or NHL since 14. And somehow managed to fuck up Battlefront, possibly the easiest lay up in the history of gaming considering the timing of release and hype for the series. That's not even getting into the fact you probably would have to drop $200 to get the full Sims 4 experience, Sim City launch was a disaster and no one is playing it anymore. Then Battlefield Hardline moves a million units at release and all is well because FPS kid will buy anything.
I remember reading an article when EA purchased bioware. They interviewed one of the top dogs at EA and he essentially said that he could care less if bioware never had a blockbuster as long as they kept putting up 90 plus on metacritic. Now they get neither from one of the former most automatic studios in gaming. The talent exodus from andromeda is alarming and I really think that we're seeing the end of bio ware as a studio.
Going on the rant theme I have a rant about the current state of gaming and media in general. How the fuck does irrational make a game like bioshock infinite then disband shortly there after? Current gamers are destroying gaming because of what is popular these days (I play cod so I'm part of the problem). This generation has been a horrible dissapointment to me with the exemption of Bloodborne, The Witcher and some excellent times I had playing Destiny. Fallout 4 is a good example as to where games are trading thoughtful and interesting content for time suck mini games. It's like mindless addiction is replacing a quality experience. I waited a while to play the witcher and I regret it. Seeing the level of care put into that game with story/gameplay/atmosphere really makes it feel like a throwback to the 2007 to 2011ish era of gaming when we were hit with flat out great games consistently. It feels like that shit is done. Maybe I'm just old
MGSV was such a huge disappointment last year. It was well done, had great sandbox potential, but holy shit, the repetition of missions was too much to overcome. Pretty much a lack of usual MGS story and not sure what the hell is happening with it, but I am parked around Mission 26 and can't find the will to continue. The first 5-6 Missions are amazing and you're waiting for things to progress and just ... more of the same. Infiltrate random base, steal someone, go back to mother base. Was looking forward to that for years, was taken aback with how unfinished it felt. To the point on the above post, I am trying to buy as many non-mainstream titles as possible. Hell, I almost bought Unravel hoping EA would see support for some interesting projects in the future.
We are a mere 3 years removed from, what I believe to be, the greatest video game ever made, Bioshock:Infinite. It combined great gameplay with one of the most thought-provoking stories ever told. Ken Levine is an absolute genius. A simple scene like this should have been how video games evolved, rather than the garbage we have now.
It's fuckin devastating that that studio closed shop. But the fact is, it didn't sell liked they hoped it would. And that's a fuckin shame
Unrealistic expectations studios have that a game needs to sell 5+ million copies to be successful. I remember shaking my head when Square Enix said Tomb Raider "only sold 3.5 million copies" at a specific point
Sooooo. . . Been playing videogames for about 30 years. #teamconsole for majority of all of this. Lately been looking to move to PC. I'm gonna build my own and try to establish a central setup in the basement but then stream up to the big screen in the LR. As far as consoles go. . I think they are hitting their limit. . or at least, I'm tired of investing into new systems every 3-4 years. I'm also a big of a nostalgia buff so I have about 10 systems now dating back to NES. To hook all this shit up would be a problem for me and my game count alone is ridiculous. Lately, If I want to play retro I just bust out the modded xbox or Wii. I kind of prefer retro over modern anyway. But I'm still intrigued by modern games (even if 95% of them are fucking shooters). I want to get down with Steam since it basically kills xbox and ps4 aside for exclusive titles. Plus I'd rather upgrade a piece of hardware rather than buy a whole new system. Doing some research I see that most PC builds can be at or slightly above Consoles but atm $$$ is not an issue. That's my videogame rant.
Reasons i'll always console: 1. Most games are optimized for console. 2. I'd rather update my system every 7 years than once a year. 3. Microsoft is going to ruin PC gaming by turning xbox and PC into the same platform.
Microsoft already held back the first 3 years of this gaming gen with their BS shitbox. Devs dumbing down their product based on the fact xbone couldnt handle. I feel like theyre so out of touch
When will we begin to treat the xbone like the wii? Its nothing but a gimmick laden roku but unlike the wii it doesnt even have good exclusives
I came from 360. I remember Microsoft telling us about what the one was going to do and be capable of. I remember thinking to mysef : "I don't give a fuck about any of this". Ive long been seeing the one in the same light as the wii. I feel like the only people over there are fanboys
I also came from 360, not that i didnt own a ps3 since launch (still have my fat backwards compatible one) but i clearly favored 360 and wouldnt have an issue going back to microsoft next gen if they put out the better console.
Steam is so much better than PS or Xbox online systems IMO. I like my PS4 enough to put off doing a build for the past year, but I'm jumping back into mostly PC, maybe as soon as Dark Souls 3. I'd keep the PS4 though for sure. Also, Sony VR system might be awesome and price point kills everything else on the market.
my favorite part about this is that Xbox went all in on the TV thing...yet Sony was the one that dropped the most convincing cord cutting option to date with Vue.
My rant: Fuck the business model of mobile games. Freemium is so fucking terrible. I would actually love to play good games on my phone and happily pay up to $10 for one ..... but "in app purchases" can go to hell. Not only do I hate them, but its obvious from publishers that mobile games "have to have them" because they make "money" from "12 year olds" Fuck em.
Doesn't xbone have a partnership with sling? Vue is a lot better than i expected it to be but still isnt very good.
Vue > Sling. I'm not a cord cutter yet but Vue is by far the closest to getting my attention since it includes ESPN/NBCSN/FS1 and a lot more channels. Still needs a bit more bit its not far off.
mine too. But they do have it live in 7 cities...just not mine. If they get it in my city I will definitely give it a hard look.
Nah, it's been available everywhere in the US since march. The middle package is quite affordable and had everything i could ever want except a few things vue just doesnt have.
I mean the Live local networks is available in 7 cities. For example you get live CBS in Miami. Yes the on demand stuff is available everywhere.
What next generation console has the best exclusives? My favorite games include Fallout, BioShock, Skyrim, Arkham Asylum/City, etc.
imo uncharted alone decides the exclusives battle. Playstation Uncharted God of War Horizon any potential The Last of Us sequel Ratchet and Clank Killzone The Last Guardian (hopefully) Until Dawn Gran Turismo JRPGs a significant amount of indie games Xbone Halo Gears of War Forza Quantum Break Crackdown Dead Rising maybe Fable at some point?
Sunset Overdrive as well as the new Tomb Raider (for some whatever time is left on the timed exclusive) are xbone exclusives.
i didn't list sunset overdrive for obvious reasons (bad). didn't list tomb raider because it's timed.
Sunset Overdrive isn't bad. I mean it's not a game to influence your console decision but it's kinda fun
and if you havent played Last of Us yet, the decision is even easier (with the remastered edition of course)
Saying it's bad is just plain wrong. It's not a console seller, but it's a very good game. I just thought it was weird to include Until Dawn (which is more of an interactive movie than a game), but not Sunset Overdrive.
