The Brutalist was good, not my favorite of the year, but very very good. Pretty straightforward though
Seeing complete unknown tonight and nickel boys next week, completing my 2024 movie watching. got tickets for companion because it looks sweet. March and April seem pretty loaded. Mickey 17, please be good!
We have a new Mafia movie!! The most dangerous enemy is an old friend. #TheAltoKnights starring Robert De Niro – only in theaters March 21. From Warner Bros. Pictures, “The Alto Knights” stars Academy Award winner Robert De Niro in a dual role, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson. The film follows two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello (De Niro) and Vito Genovese (De Niro), as they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever. “The Alto Knights” was written by Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi (“Goodfellas”) and produced by Oscar winner Irwin Winkler (“Rocky,” “Goodfellas”), Levinson, Jason Sosnoff, Charles Winkler and David Winkler, with Mike Drake executive producing. De Niro stars alongside Debra Messing (“Will & Grace”), Cosmo Jarvis (“Shōgun”), Kathrine Narducci (“The Irishman”), Michael Rispoli (“Billions”), Michael Adler (“Peppermint”), Ed Amatrudo (“Till,” “Nashville”), Joe Bacino (“Kick-Ass”), Anthony J. Gallo (“The Irishman”), Wallace Langham (“Ford v Ferrari”), Louis Mustillo (“Cooper’s Bar,” “Mike & Molly”), Frank Piccirillo, Matt Servitto (“Billions”) and Robert Uricola (“Raging Bull”). Joining Levinson (“Rainman,” “Dopesick”) behind the camera are Oscar-nominated director of photography Dante Spinotti (“The Insider,” “L.A. Confidential”), production designer Neil Spisak (the “Spider-Man” films, “Dopesick”), Oscar-nominated editor Douglas Crise (“Babel,” “Dopesick”), Oscar-nominated costume designer Jeffrey Kurland (“Bullets Over Broadway,” “Tenet”), award-winning casting director Ellen Chenoweth (“Past Lives”) and composer David Fleming (“Hillbilly Elegy,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”). Warner Bros. Pictures Presents an Irwin Winkler Production, a Barry Levinson Film, “The Alto Knights.” The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures worldwide and released in theaters nationwide on March 21, 2025, and internationally beginning 19 March 2025.
brutalist tmrw nickel boys friday sing sing saturday feel like these releases could have been spaced out a bit better idk
the longer I think about Brutalist im leaning toward love it levels but I have an issue Spoiler the movie is very clearly about the relationship between directors and financiers and apparently he had a very bad one with Vox Lux and in that lens I think the movie and its portrayal and critiques are all very good, but I keep going back and forth bc then it's a bit too self indulgent bc it makes Corbet the titular character (and he also does kind of make non-populist art) and the whole rape part feels very very extreme (I think it's still extreme but it at least serves a purpose to have the wife come and blow up the dinner)
Spoiler the thing I liked least is how literal all the subtext became in the second half. We all knew that relationship was going to go south, it felt pretty unnecessary to have Toth raped. Everything in the movie just feels too obvious and on-the-nose to be this grand epic vision of art, capitalism, and American values that Corbet insists it is. Maybe The Brutalist is supposed to be a play on words. I still really liked it and what it was trying to do.
I thought it was fine and timmy’s performance was great. Maybe I subverted my own expectations but I didn’t expect it to be so much of a jukebox movie, where everyone introduces themselves by full name so you know who they are, and everyone stares at the musician in awe for 40 percent of the movie. Plenty of things to like about it, but it sure doesn’t stray far from the formula.
We Live In Time was good but not great. I enjoyed naked Florence Pugh and mostly naked Andrew Garfield.
That pull quote is so funny Edit: I do unapologetically love mystic river, but it doesn’t make the quote any less funny
When Mystic River was on Netflix I’d always hover over it because the preview clip was Sean Penn screaming “is that my daughter in there? Is she in there? Sean?! Sean!!” and it annoyed my wife. Fun bit
Emilia Perez winning would be such a fumble after getting some cultural relevancy back after Oppenheimer last year wicked or a complete unknown would be bad winners too, but at least they could say they have their finger on the pulse of the moviegoing public
this would have been such a slam dunk year for a historically great director with little oscar recognition (little in comparison to the amount of awards they should have won so far) to get a "career achievement" type of run at the Oscars.
Does the 3 hr 35 minute runtime I see for The Brutalist include the intermission? I might go see it Monday but I want to make sure I can get back home in time for the football game. Also, is it worth seeing in IMAX? My IMAX theater kinda stinks and the chairs are pretty uncomfortable.
Intermissions usually aren’t from what I’ve seen but I’m pretty sure the brutalists intermission is included in the 3:35 runtime
Depends on the theater usually. Have Malco theaters around me and they're usually about 15 minutes....but I went to a Regal theater this summer and it was fucking 40 minutes.
My A Complete Unknown screening at AMC was over 30 minutes of previews and commercials. We've started leaving the house at the showtime and usually have time to get snacks before the movie starts.
AMC is usually at least 20-25 and you have to factor in that they'll always start them 3-5 minutes late.
yes, it's 2 100 minute halves (so that's 3hr 20mins) as far as the imax part goes, just make sure you see it on a screen that does well with the 1.66 aspect ratio I saw it on imax for that only reason even though I had the same issue with the chairs, my knees were dying after 4 hours
When I saw Guardians of the Galaxy 3 someone at the theater screwed up and they started the movie on time without showing any previews. I was already in my seat so it didn't bother me, but a lot of people complained because they showed up 20 minutes late so I sat through the first 30 minutes of the movie twice.
AMC let's you know that you can show up 20 minutes after showtime and be fine. I appreciate that, generally. I like trailers for big, new movies. Loved catching the 28 years later trailer at the theater last night.
yesterday was my first time at an AMC in a long time after all the trailers they showed 2 AMC ads back to back (second one was the kidman one) as if im not already in the AMC theater
we come to this place.... to larf.... I love it. also it was cold as shit in Denver and the AMC had heated recliners.
