Plumbing halp needed old shower handle/valve broke. Wtf do I do here? Can’t just find a handle that fits this stem, I guess, but that would be ideal. I think it is a Kohler but ???? Can someone point me to a replacement part or kit at HD?
Extract the set screw. See what shape of shaft you have. Go to hardware store and pick out handle that has same adapter shape for shaft. Slide handle on. Secure handle with set screw. Profit. Also, may be in need of a new set screw.
I like the way you talk dirty about my shaft. But completely unrelated to any dunlop I am not sure what my shaft looks like/which part that is Nonetheless I am assuming the set screw is the Phillips head thingy sticking out on the end. I’ve indeed already backed that out and I can tell you that it’s just tremendous. Not sure what it does, but intuitively could tell it had just the right amount of rust on it :chefs kiss: in the end I think you’ve given me enough keywords to ensure YouTube and I are gonna have a nice night together. thank you for your service Edit: oh, chief objective for this that maybe you can also help me with. Is it possible to accomplish this job without a fire hydrant type spray emitting horizontally from my wall? I.e., am I inevitably going to have to take something off that requires me to turn off the water?
Help me avoid a domestic incident. Our laundry room is on a 3 way switch. Neither switch has a neutral wire. I need to figure out a way to turn it off automatically. Is there some sort of motion sensor that can be used to turn the damn light off?
There are timed/motion sensor switch controls. Unsure if the will work on 3way circuitry. Accidentally running over your wife might be easier.
I tried to install a smart switch on a switch that turned out to be a former 3-way, the other end of which I don’t know where it terminated. I did not die, but retreated unsuccessfully and fear to this day that I wired something back wrong and we’ll someday burn to the ground as a result.
So two Thursdays ago wife tells me her car is making an awful noise (not home related but hear me out). I drive it, it's the brake pads, no problem I can fix that easy in the driveway. Tell wife she isn't allowed to go anywhere Friday and I'll grab the pads and do em that evening. Friday rolls around and about noon she calls me and says there's water on the floor by around the washing machine. Fuuuucck! It's only 3 years old and like an $800+ machine. Call repair guy, they can't get there till the next Wednesday. She normally does all the laundry on Friday so we are due. Somewhere in there she calls and said she started smelling a burning smell from the washer. So I said fuck it and went home and started taking the machine apart..... found the water valve solenoid had split open and sprayed water all over the main board and fried a wiring connection. Took all that shit to the appliance repair/parts place I had already called. They of course have the valve, just not the board and wiring harness. Said they will be here on Tuesday. $300 later I had my parts on the way. Go to the auto parts store and grab the brake pads. Go home to a wife that is shopping for new washers online and I almost got divorced. Put brakes on car and felt accomplished. Do laundry at a laundry mat on Saturday. Tuesday rolls around and the washer parts arnt here. Wednesday, no parts. Thursday no parts...... I call every parts place between Austin and San Antonio and nobody has them We have my company Christmas party that Saturday, so she is freaking out about having clean clothes. In starting to get worried too. Luckily the parts came in on Friday, I slapped em in and we successfully didn't stink for the Christmas party. Then we get home from the Christmas party yesterday and the toilet in the master bath is leaking all over the floor. It's dripping from the tank connection, so I shut it off and said fuck it we can use the guest bath for a day. So today after work I grabbed a whole new toilet and replaced that motherfucker this evening. Currently taking it for its maden voyage as I type this with a cold beer on the bathroom counter next to me.
Situations like theses are the exact reason why weed should be legal everywhere. My stress level shot up just reading that shit. Fucking hell man, condolences lol
In my case? No. Luckily I did learn the exact location of both the sprinkler shutoff valve and the water main shutoff valve. Unfortunately it was in that order as well.
This is just one humble brag after another with your skills in fixing shit. Terrible luck all around but awesome you have the talents you do.
Got 3 separate plumbing companies coming in to give me estimates on a re-plumbing of the entire house. I have 36 year old copper pipes in the house that have had like 12-14 pinhole leaks in them over the past 6 years that have caused problems for us. It's not going to stop, and I really don't want another big flooding incident costing thousands in remediation and shit. So I'm going to have the whole house redone with PEX. Any thoughts on questions I should be asking or things I should be looking for with these guys? I have some ideas, but I'm no bigred so I'm sure I'll forget something.
I block that now, learned that lesson with truck nuts. My wife will see that in our shared Amazon history though.
For real, all the food UncleJesse makes looks just as good as or better than mine. He just doesn’t shamelessly pimp it on here as much as I do.
I have a smoke detector that will not stop beeping. I changed the battery and did the press and hold reset, started beeping again 12 hours later. I have repeated this process of removing the new battery and putting it back in, resetting, probably 5 times now and it still starts beeping again after some time. Help
pretty simple device. Just make sure it is not a combo smoke and CO2 and you have an unaddressed CO2 issue.
If your water is eating your copper piping, make a note to specify plastic fittings in the new Pex lines. There are likely some places that will be difficult for them to access. Find out who fixes drywall etc if they have to open up a wall or ceiling. Always ask for references, Zero reason a contractor can't get you 3 customers to email the next day. Post up if you have specific questions once you get the quotes. Maybe Google the brand and see if is an error message? They can go bad, I think. Or just take it out back for a little impromptu skeet practice.
This is great advice. Had my basement done like 4-5 years ago and dickhead who did it used all metal fittings. One corroded, in the ceiling above my shower. Pin hole, but it was enough to cut and replace. I’ve since had a few more done here and there and I know have to listen to my wife ask when the rest will get completed. Going to require two drywall cuts. My biggest issue is I am in contractor friend zone. My guys are all busy as shit and generally don’t charge me correctly and would never give me a quote. Sucks, but if I went down there right now and sent some pics out of a leak they would be over quickly. Last but not least, to the guy that built the holder for his pile of wood. I’m not doing it and I won’t even research attempting to do it.
As funshot said, post the quotes here. You can get wildly different quotes for what you think is the same job, depending on how a contractor approaches it, what materials, fittings, etc they are using. Like he said, if they are including drywall repairs, pipe routing, insulation, etc all can make a huge difference. Do you know where your existing plumbing is routed from? (All through the attic or all coming up from the slab or under a pier and beam?) I once had a friend who worked for a public entity and they were looking for a new roof for their say 5000 sf building. They went out on their own and got 3 quotes (like their rules said they had to) then called me asking if I could help them understand why the quotes were so different. I think it was like 1/4 million dollar difference between the high and the low bids. All three were taking completely different approaches, one being just a new cap over the top of the existing roof and one being ripping everything down to structure and starting with new tapered insulation because the existing roof wasn't sloped well to drain. Pex is very good for what it is. But it isn't bullet proof. Luckily it's easy to fix if it does leak.
Are your detectors hardwired? I had one that would beep if another detector had a low battery or if it had recently gone off
Our main line comes in through the garage. From there, it basically runs into 2 section of the house. The powder room and guest bath section runs straight up a wall in the garage. The main bath and kitchen section runs through the basement (acoustic tile ceiling), around the ceiling in the kitchen, and up into the master bath. I don’t think it will be too much work. A neighbor of mine has his done in five hours. I’ll definitely look for the plastic fittings vs metal. I was wondering if a manifold system was worthwhile (I don’t think so but idk). And as far as drywall and paint, I’m going to assume none of them will handle that. I can deal with that portion anyway. I may have them switch out some fixtures while they’re at it but idk.
Yes they are. However I think I solved the mystery. I was pushing in the test button to “reset it” after replacing the battery and apparently after taking the thing down and reading the back of it, I was overriding it into low battery snooze mode and so it would just start beeping after 12 hours
Yea, well, tonight I figured out I hooked the hot and cold hoses up to the washer backwards I mean one of the valves is red, so like a 5 year old could get that part right
1st estimate to re-pipe the house is in. Spoiler $4,600. They will leave the copper behind so I can scrap it. Spoiler better than I expected
That is way better than I expected. We looked at a house that needed new plumbing from cast iron, and the quote from the owners was 30-40k
