So I'm going to come up next Saturday around lunch and stay the day/leave late sunday. Staying at the Intercontinental Times Square. I was planning on taking the train from Milford to Grand Central and then a cab I guess but is there a easier way to get to the hotel? What should I do in my limited time there? Planned on doing the memorial and 1 WTC since neither were completed the only other time I was there. Wouldn't object to hitting up that Irish bar Menelaus introduced me to again either. Still need dinner, breakfast/brunch the next day, etc.
A backpack. I'm only there for a night/day so I'm traveling pretty dang light. How hard would it be to walk, as far as navigating and not getting lost.
From my experience as a southerner in NYC, it is very hard to get lost because of the true grid pattern that they have. I usually dont even have to pull out my phone to look where I'm going in NYC anymore. And I spend about a weekend up there per year.
Yea I think I'm going to walk. I'm only going to have a backpack so I'll walk and do the touristy thing taking pictures. What are some places easy to get to for dinner that night? I'm not big on anything spicy/etc. I'm more of a steak and burgers or Italian food guy. Also up for buying some TMBers the first round at a bar.
I love it and wish Atlanta was built similar. I use the Embark NYC app for the subway when I'm there. As the residents have said, walk from Grand Central to Times Square. Times Square is a tourist trap, I'm not a fan at all. Make sure to check out the ceilings at GC, worth stepping off to the side and taking in.
The only thing I did in Times Square last year was stay there and wander into some strip club drunkenly. Went to an awesome Irish Bar in the East Village I think and took my parents to Porter House New York for dinner.
If you haven't already, I would recommend checking out the east and west village. Great bars, no tourists, lot of young people, great food. Definitely hit Katz's deli if you haven't been there before. Get the hot pastrami. PJ Clarkes makes a great burger and has a lot of NY history - been around for 100+ years, Jackie Onassis used to take the boys there, Nat King Cole loved it, and Sinatra declared that they made "the cadallac of burgers." They now have the cadallac burger which is exactly how Sinatra liked it. Extra Virgin is a great brunch spot that's deep in the west village - it feels more like Europe back there than NYC. There are also a million great bagel places where you could just grab a breakfast sando on a bagel.
Only thing I've done in the east village was McSorley's. And I loved that place. I'm not going to have a ton of time but I'm all about grabbing an amazing burger for dinner Saturday before going out for some drinks. That Cadillac burger sounds amazing off their menu.
go get dinner in the west village ad walk around during the daytime if you havent been there. lots of cool history, buildings. then drink all night in the east village. you could go to the comedy cellar for a 1 hour show while walking from the west to the east.
neither. its like on 50 something. corner bistro in the west village has great burgers and is pretty cheap for nyc standards.
Damn just saw that the 1 WTC observation deck doesn't open till May 29. I may try and go back at the end of this job just for that.
One of the best things about NY is that it's super easy to get anywhere - you can walk across the island so quickly. It wouldn't take you that long to walk over there, plus it would be a nice urban hike. You could also take the S (shuttle between times square and GC) and then the 6 up to 51st and be there in two shakes of a lambs tail. Subway would be fastest because there's no traffic on the tracks - even short distances can take a while above ground due to traffic. Similarly, it will be easiest for you to take the 1 train from Time Square down to Christoper Street when you go to the west village. Really quick, straight shot.
Ok so I'm going to take the next couple days to plan it out. Then try and write down the best ways to get from point to point. I'll forget train numbers and shit if I don't. Right now I'm kind of leaning towards heading to PJs for an early dinner, then heading to McSorleys for a couple beers. Then whatever other bars are recommended. Sunday I'll head to the 9/11 memorial for sure, and would like to catch a couple other spots, central park if possible or anything like that. Will probably take a 730 pm train from grand Central back to CT. Of course if any of you guys are up for a couple beers on Sat night I'm down like four flats on a Cadillac.
Also be careful with planning around the L train right now (East/West). Been tons of construction lately so it might be down. But really, you can do all of your horizontal movement by walking.
Hey guys, shower me with your recommendations for dinner in Brooklyn. Assume money is no object. You can leave out St. Anslem.
Yeah, maybe not THAT much an object, plus it's closed when I'd be going. Anyone been to Meadowsweet? Been looking around and it seems good.
Traif *****/***** Minetta Tavern makes a killer burger but it's like $30, but it's basically a ground up steak on a bun. Paul's Da Burger Joint on 2nd and St Mark's is an awesome burger joint. Nothing fancy, just a classic burger joint with great fixins.
We live near Torst so that's a common destination. Delaware and Hudson looks interesting though. We owe you our lives for sending us there, one of the best steaks (if not THE best) I've ever had in my life.
I mean I was referring to Pok Pok. If y'all are talmbout Quality Meats then I will gladly take your praises, deserved or not.
Yeah I knew Fancy meant PokPok, which was on our list, it was Heavy Mental who suggested St. Anslem a while back, which we've been to a few times. We decided on Meadowsweet, will report back.
Ok so I should be checked into my hotel by like 3pm. Want to head to PJ Clarke's on 3rd ave for dinner. Then to the east village I reckon to drink away. What's the easiest way to accomplish that? Probably going to head to McSorley's first and then whatever bars y'all recommend. Sunday will be my sight seeing day. 9/11 memorial and whatever else I can fit in before heading back to Grand Central for a 7:30pm train back to CT.
Robertas is pretty good pizza and it's in BK. but pizza shouldn't be a day trip here But Fancy has shown me two of my favorite spots in the city - pok pok and the jeffrey. So I would defer to him I've been working in Chinatown a lot more bc my office space downtown has moved to Centre St. Try Breakroom on Baxter. So good, and pretty cheap
#bless On that note I'm going to try St. Anslem in the next 2 weeks. Their Yelp photos make me wanna believe in something
Has anyone been to the Modern (it's in MoMA)? My buddy works there. Expensive as shit, wanted a TMB review
My bad, I think this is the third time that I mistook who referred us to St Anselm. I'll just let KJROD20 take over from here as I am a woman and my brain is a third of the size of his (it's science).
