Episode 1 gave me anxiety and I liked it. Ep 2 was pretty weak, but obviously they are setting the table for his relationship falling apart with his old best bud who makes his beats. Can’t remember the guys name though
He has some talent. Has some comedy talent too. Greatest strength is making words rhyme though IMO. This is like watching Jordan play baseball
First episode was really good, really like how this show can really get those 5-7 min opening scenes where the viewer feels a little lost and uncomfortable than brings it together. That episode was definitely influenced by Uncut Gems
Watched Eps 1 and 2 last night on Hulu. Didn't love it, didn’t hate it. Interested to see where the season goes though. I did laugh at two comments I saw on Reddit for episode one. “Is this what caused the Save Dat Money music video?” followed by “Or is this why LD’s been lying about an album coming soon for the last 5 years”
This episode may be the most uncomfortable thing I ever watched. LOL at the ending. I don’t even know what to think. This shit makes Larry David’s behavior seem normal.
Also, can someone explain last week's ending to me? I assumed there would be some clarification/continuation this week. Granted I wasn't super focused, but was that real or not?
The first 3 eps have been some of the weirdest shit I’ve ever watched. Not even sure any of its been good, just bizarre. Most of ep 3 was annoying, gross, or both.
I may have been a bit tuned out, but didn't he jerk off with the ants, but also hook up with the girl? They seemed like alternate endings when I watched it, but I again I may have just been fucked up.
After the 3rd episode I joked to my GF “this dudes going to be forced to put out music when this show gets cancelled”
The ants part was a dream sequence of him thinking about what would happen if he sent her home. So, he ended up hooking up with her.
If I am being honest the season has been over the top cringey and almost intentionally unwatchable. I am sticking with it, but there has to be some happiness and payoff. Also as awkward and wrong as he was last season, this season he is making himself unlikable, which I struggle to see how that is a good thing for his brand. I get that it is a fictional show, but it's fictional about him.
Yeah, not sure what vibe he is going for, but it’s decent enough to stick with. I don’t love it, but I’m willing to watch and it’s enjoyable enough.
I'm only through episode 2 but I'm really enjoying this season so far. I think it's intentionally showing how shitty and deflating the entertainment biz can be in the day-to-day. But I do agree that the show in general has made LD seem more unlikeable. He seems miserable to work with and kind of a dick to all his friends. He seems to fall back on this "desire to be the greatest rapper ever" to explain it away but, dude, you're not Michael Jordan.
I think that it's developing his insecurities and privilege. I would imagine that he ends up having to confront those as the season goes on.
I could definitely see it as him trying to show "This is how I used to be when I was first starting out but I've grown and learned from that." I just hope it doesn't end up like Silicon Valley, which I found frustrating because of how much they spun their wheels and the characters were basically static (even though it was obviously a comedy).
This show sucks. Not sure how it got renewed. Would be amazed if it goes past this season. Like some of the music in it though.
The channel with like 3 original comedy shows in its history? And it still got pretty low ratings. I enjoyed season 1 ok. Probably more so that it came on during a lockdown and i had nothing else to do.
IMO the show has been similar to his music in a way. When someone is super creative but also not afraid to be a little weird/different there’s that fine line between the people who love it and the people who think ‘meh this ones a little too much’. Again just IMO but his music can be really solid, but other songs are just not good to me. Same thing with the show, Ep3 was super bizarre and most of the time I was thinking “ok this sucks” but then randomly I’d lose it at something…then 5-10 more minutes of “why am I watching this?” before I cracked up again.
I'm not watching the show but based on the takes, I'd guess this is accurate. Like "Earth" was a giant project that was kinda cool, but from a music perspective, a complete miss for me. Likewise, the entire Brain album - except the track with Game, which actually has one of LD's best verses ever on it.
Mike's story on that ep was heartbreaking though. Dude just wanted someone to be with him on his birthday.
If I was giving AV Club reviews to the episodes this season I'd go: Episode 1: A Episode 2: B+ Episode 3: C+ First episode was a great bottle episode about privilege and his role in infiltrating K-Pop as an analogy for a while Jewish guy infiltrating rap. This last episode was a little over the top. Three straight episodes (4 going back to the Season Finale) of long-winded confusing opening scenes is just too much and starting to wear on me ("Oh, the viewer is confused for 5-7 mins of what's happening? How artistic!") It didn't change my view on this show being better than my expectations and the Mike storyline was redeeming, but didn't do a lot for me overall.
