for sure we both share our “good” finds. Fuck looking at it on a shelf for a year. I got a bottle of PVW12 last year for MRSP called 6 of my bourbon bro’s over and we killed it that night.
Picked up a Weller Special Reserve tonight for the first time based on the recs here. Really good but of the last two bottles I’ve bought from page one recs I like the Four Roses Single Barrel much better
OUR. That was a fun collaboration. Next year we do a 0 based budget reset OP. Expanding when I get some more time to add proofs.
Yeah Weller SR is good if you can get it at MRSP but would never spend over 30 for it. Honestly i would take Eagle Rare all day over it but thats just my opinion. Wilderness Trail BIB is really good if you have never had it.
Just for the record, I’m not a huge fan of the WSR nor w12 and absolutely love the OWA and full proof.
It tastes like OWA. But agreed. I’ve had it and don’t own one. Odds are goblue31602 has the best chance of getting it.
Some of my personal favorites that should be somewhat easy to find: New Riff John J Bowman Single Barrel - Blantons mashbill bottled in VA and 100 proof Old Scout 107 Old Forester 1920 Eagle Rare Makers Cask strength
Yep have a bottle of it right now. It’s good but I enjoy 1920 more. If you can find the 1910 for a good price I would for sure get it. It’s one I would always like to have on my shelf.
I like 1910 better (have both). I’m semi convinced I like 1910 more just because it is harder to find. Just poured a glass for reasons.
Haha drinking it right now as well. Both are great from what I heard 1910 should be more available in the future but who knows. Old Forester is doing some great things and is slowly becoming my favorite.
If you still have that Weller SR, get a bottle of Larceny and do a side by side or blind comparison. I think you’ll prefer the Larceny.
My store was waiting on their delivery when I went by today but they were expecting Midwinter Night's Dram so I'm planning on stopping back by tomorrow. Will have to look for this as well Edit: not a reassuring reaction to that rec above
Picked up another OF 1910(amazed how fast the holidays killed my last bottle), Sazerac Rye, Smooth Ambler and a new favorite for the price David Nicholson. Oregon allocations are coming in and my store contact is putting a Mitchers 10 year aside for me and possibly a Stagg or TH Handy for retail.
Looking at the OP and maybe it is the “for the price” designation for look at something else, but not sure I agree with whistle pig or Harper. Whistle pig Rye 10 and 12 in particular are really good IMO.
People would agree with you. Maybe most of us. But their prices don’t come within 50% of being reasonable on most of their bottles. Overpriced is putting it lightly so some of us shun them in general. Their bottles sit. The old thread has a few discussions about it.
Not sure if this has been posted yet. Picked up a bottle of the Dickel for $35 not bad for a 13 year old. http://whiskyadvocate.com/top20/
Not trying to pile on about Whistle Pig, but in general I was thinking of the OP about myself three years ago. What would I have liked to know. IE someone that likes bourbon but doesn’t know much. I’d want to be told not to buy Whistle Pig, Orphan Barrel, Harper 15 etc. because they are over priced and try to use their price and gimmicks to imply great quality and being special. The product doesn’t demand that price. Pretty quickly I learned if you can find it and it is $100+, it isn’t worth it. So make sure you know what you’re buying in that price range. Even now I’m an idiot and bought little book 2 thinking I was buying little book 3 literally this week. (Sorry Anison too). The price should have told me but I didn’t realize they moved the price up $25 from last year.
Those fuckers, same thing happened with the McKenna bib. Used to pick it up all the time for $25-30 wins an award and goes up to $50 i have even seen some cunts try and charge $100-200
This is a fun Instagram account to follow, i have actually scored some nice picks from him reposting the receipts in his stories. https://www.instagram.com/overpricedbourbon/?hl=en Going hunting today during lunch, if you live in the Nashville area shoot me a PM and i will send you some good stores to check out.
Motion to have Wild Turkey 101 added to OP in the <$30 category? I think that’s one of the brands (like Beam and Jack) that still suffers from people relating it to their grandad’s drink or what they mixed with coke in college, but the 101 is a solid product that’s always available with a great price. If you’re just getting into it or still a beginner, it’s definitely one to try before you step into the $50-75+ or boutique bourbon realm
The humor of the McKenna situation is that it was a single barrel that won that award. And now every bottle from barrels that didn’t win awards gets the higher price tag.
Also, I decided on Evan Williams BiB (white label) for my sub $20 showdown tomorrow. Haven’t had Very Old Barton, which was the other one I was considering.
I will admit i love that shit, for some reason i have found it at Costco more than any other place. Got 3 bottles in the bunker right now.
