118 210 Balcony third row somewhere Been staying away from setlists and the like since this tour started. Spoiled a couple of songs accidentally fucking around on Nugs the other day.
I’m doing Winston Salem which should be fun - going to have to pull off a miracle to get Red Rocks tickets again this year
Just want to go to the show with a clear head about what's about to be played. I find it important for me both for artists that play a similar set the whole tour and different songs each night of a run. Don't want to get caught up in if I'm going to get a song or not. Or guess at what song might be next.
Fingers wife just got back from Mardi Gras in NOLA. Fingers crossed she (and Billy) don’t have the ‘vid
Not a bad consolation prize for not being in Nashville tonight. https://pinecone.org/event/2023-down-home-concerts-sierra-hull-justin-moses/
I have watched a lot of Austin City Limits over the years. It’s a go to Saturday night after college football or just killing time at home when the kids are in bed and wife is snoozing on the couch. I’ve been watching it periodically for 20 years, sometimes turn off immediately if the guest doesn’t interest me. Billy Strings doing Away From The Mire 10/21/21 is probably the best performance I’ve seen. No hyperbole, probably have watched 50-75 times since on YouTube.
Fri: This Old World > Know It All Sat: Show Me The Door > Secrets That's what Im talking about. So perfect together.
Sierra Hill and Justin Mosses were incredible. Acoustic single mic, and mixed up some of their originals with some fiddle tune staples. Definitely go if they come around. Justin Moses is really really impressive. Probably the best dobro player around, but he can also get up there and play guitar, fiddle, and mandolin with the best of them. Joseph Decosimo opened and played a bunch of old songs and ballads. Mostly stuff he learned from some characters in the hills of Tennessee, passed down by memory for generations. https://indyweek.com/music/reviews/joseph-decosimo-while-you-were-slumbering-review/
Past 2 nights have been a ton of fun. Wish I was going tonight, but it’s not in the cards. Fortunately able to keep the bluegrass going in Steamboat with Winter Wonder Grass next weekend. Currently only planning to go Sunday but may need to add a day https://winterwondergrass.com/steamboat-2023-lineup/
Hilarious “It’s kinda funny meeting you here, Derek. You guys got to just see me meet Derek Trucks, for the first time ever. Now we’re going to play a little bit and see what happens,” Strings mused to the audience, later playfully comparing the musical summit to “two dogs sniffing each other’s asses.” Videos here https://www.spin.com/2023/02/derek-trucks-billy-strings/
I’ll be pouting about missing that one for a while. Grand Ole Opry style and a great set list for it. It was apparently taped for PBS, which was why there was no nugs stream. Hope we still get the soundboard posted to nugs
It was certainly a special night. As close to a religious experience as I’ve had at a show, and I didn’t even take hallucinogens!
Lot of stuff in Winston this weekend. Red Daisy and DocStock festivals also celebrating Doc Late night shows from Jon Stickly Trio, Fireside Collective, and Into The Fog
Kicking the weekend off with this tonight https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/22793...-garciagrisman-carrboro-cats-cradle-back-room
Lots open at Noon. And apparently no set break tomorrow, only Saturday. It’s been a minute since I hung out in Winston, but it’s fairly small city and social areas are spaced out with little pockets of stuff. There’s a handful of breweries and a couple are downtown. You have 4th street/DT area with bars and restaurants, Burke St area (social club there with table games, really good pizza at Burke St Pizza and they serve late night slices), West End area has Bar Nola I would go to if I were going to the Opera House. Campus/arena is a little ways away from all of the other areas, and not many options really close to it. There’s a little golf themed place close called Putters that’s walkable. I will probably end up checking out Incendiary Brewery for lunch, Red Daisy or Ramkat for a bit, then to the lot late afternoon.
There’s way too much smoke for it not to be true at this point. It was being professionally filmed from all angles by someone, and since Nugs didn’t stream it I think it adds up pretty well.
That’s Doc though. I don’t think I ever saw him play standing up. Billy imitated him in more ways than just his music tonight. Amazing homage and Billy is a damn legend.
What they did at the Ryman and last night, sandwiched between their usual stuff. Unbelievable. I love the effects and pedals and all that as much as anyone, but wouldn’t mind a bit if they dropped them for more stuff like that. Would be great to hear their original stuff done like that. Jarrod is really allowed to come through when they’re acoustic or just plugged in. Last night kind of felt like the handing off of bluegrass/roots guitar goat status.
Great weekend. Doc night was everything I wanted and more. 2nd night Billy was feeling it on Mire and Highway Hypnosis in the 1st set. He threw on a #1 WF Bball Jersey at set break and was running all over the place. Singing from mics all over the stage. Creek > Pyramid > Must Be Seven > Creek in the 2nd set . I think they wanted to squeeze Slew Foot in there but they ran out of time and still wanted to get in Red Daisy. Topped it off with a single mic encore with Tony Rice’s guitar that still had the same set of strings that he last played on it. Now I’ve got the wook flu and need to get better before Charleston next weekend.
When he’s soloing you can obvious hear him on any night. The rest of them are peeling back some to give him space. When Billy and Billy in particular are leaning into their different pedals, it can be hard to hear what Jarrod is doing on rhythm or even some fills. Can still hear the big chops if he’s staying right on the backbeat, but that’s about it. He’s doing some intricate chop chord/rhythm work that can get lost when there’s a lot else going on.
