Been a down year as well in both times going and fish caught for me this year. But came home with a 10 pc boneless meal Saturday morning.
Ditto'd. Feels like it's been 84 years since I last caught a fish. Start day for work just got pushed back another day and tomorrow should looks to be decent. Time to binge all the Fall weather fishing vids I can find and bury some trebles in my hand while rigging poles. I just want 1 more fish, gosh dern it.
Headed to OBX next week. Work this week is predictably shitty. This time next week, toes in sand, rod in hand.
A user on a fly fishing forum I'm on started sending an Epic 580 Fastglass fly rod around for users to use. A "Fellowship of the traveling rod". I've got it this week, so I hiked deep into the SC wilderness for this. Caught a few browns, had a couple missed chances at others and caught a bunch of warpaint shiners. It'll going to someone who's taking to Africa next.
Day one update: getting skunked. Rained all day yesterday on the trip down. Cloudy, 64, 15+ mph winds. Froze my tits off on the beach. Started raining about 330 so I called it. Pops caught a little black drum this morning, fella down the beach caught a small blue. One of those days where I could have taken the conditions a little easier if there was anything biting. Tomorrow looks similar but mostly sunny.
Red drum would be primary target, but fishing in the surf can catch anything, anytime. 12' Wright&McGill , Penn Battle, braid. 3oz pyramid was holding okay yesterday with whole finger mullet for bait. I keep a St. Croix with another Battle for throwing artificials, but got an awful wind knot halfway down the spool yesterday, so that's gotta be fixed.
Attempted to fish this morning. Was supposed to be a low of +0.1 at 11:30. Was already negative by 9 when I got on the water. Wind was howling, drizzled on and off, and sun finally peaked through at 11 on way back to the ramp in this picture Saw one mullet and a fucking otter in a creek which was cool
More tough sledding yesterday. Solid bite at 730am. That was the beginning and the end however. Beautiful weather, just need some cooperation from the fish. A few puppy drum caught just north of us on the outgoing tide yesterday afternoon. Maybe the water is cooling off, which should help.
Get back in those creeks and find some deep holes. I bet there will be reds at lower tides. I really enjoy fishing this time of year. The trout bite is insane at high tide and then can shift to reds at low tide. About to start working 4x10s so I can drop kiddos off at day care and hit the water
Any of the inshore guys here use the the salt strong skinny lipper? I’ve caught a snook on each of my last two trips and had an overslot break me off on some oysters this past Saturday. It seems to be a money lure
Won't bore you with the details of another shit day. On a related note we may need more bourbon to see us through.
Don’t know anything about the salt strong lure, but jerk baits have been big trout killers for a long time. The word is finally getting out because of social media.
Yeah I’m a big fan of inline hooks vs treble. Much more forgiving when I launch it into the mangroves. This lure is cool because it floats so I generally use it as a topwater. Also the rattles in it apparently annoy the hell out of predatory fish. Salt strong has some proprietary stuff that I don’t like, but I use the hell out of the skinny lipper and a few of their soft plastics
Their Slam Shady is one of the best colors for clean water. I’d use Zman more if they didn’t destroy everything else I use.
looks like a knock off yozuri Swap out the trebles for inline circles on all plugs. The only issue is the weight difference could affect how they float/act. Mirrolure makes it really easy and sells them labeled which plugs they replace
I have a few yo-zuris. This one has slightly different action on it and also doesn’t work as deep. Pretty sure the ones I have also sink when you’re not reeling, but could be wrong.
I use Zman almost exclusively as my soft plastics. Pinfish tear up almost everything else. They are a pain to rig weedless, but once you figure it out, it’s not as bad.
Had to go to Missouri for work, so I took the afternoon after my flight to go to a spring creek with wild redbands. I hiked in to the spot I wanted to go to. At first I thought it was going to be a bust as this is what I found when I reached the stream: I hiked up the stream bed for a while and came to water where it started going under ground. Immediately started seeing fish too. Leaves on the water and low water made for tough but fun fishing.
you are hardcore to bring fly fishing stuff and start hiking around right after a flight. good for you!
Leaving today for Shenandoah. Was supposed to be a trip for natives but no fishing in the park due to lack of water and high water temps. Will have to hit some bigger creeks outside the park. Supposed to be 87 degrees on Sat there. WTF!
Thank goodness my wife is amazing and I switched to 4x10 at work. Heading to drop the kayak in right now
How’s the fishing up there been? I’ve had good luck with snook lately. I think we probably have another 4 to 6 weeks or so of that before they’re deep in the creeks.
I've got the same set up. 4x10 and a wife that's OK with me going fishing on Fridays as long as I'm home before the kids get home.
Two reds so far been about 6 weeks since I’ve been. Flounder is closed but trout supposed to be picking up
We a good day. In all they caught 7 Rainbows in the river and then 5 bass in the lake on the property we're staying at. We'll come back for the brookies in the early spring if we get enough precip this winter.
Yeah, I use a 3 wt glass rod on these streams. It's definitely the darkest one I've found. And the red and blue spots just pop on the dark.
Steamboat Springs. First one in the meadow is on private water on a guided day on the edge of the Flat Tops on the Yampa. Second one is on Sarvis Creek. Been making a fall trip there for a long time and my buddy and I have gotten relatively familiar with the area so we kinda know where to hit in certain situations. Plus Steamboat is just a fun town in the fall. Past summer tourists and before skiing, beautiful weather, leaves changing if you catch it right, fun breweries and local bars. You probably shouldn’t go there.
