Unless they've cleared some space, your shot probably wont be more than 50 yds. Shooting slugs, I assume?
For sure go with slugs. As NoleNBlue mentioned, under 50 yards is do-able, realistically under 35 yards is ideal. Once they are hit, they hemorrhage blood and the trail is extremely easy to pick up - that is if they don't go down almost immediately. Slugs certainly test your metal in regards to being patient and waiting until the buck is close enough.
I'm going to Wisconsin for some work shit to hunt them next week. All I have heard is bitching about how bad it sucks but this also comes from my boss who is a huge bitch
What TomSawyer said. I usually aim right behind the shoulder so some variance will still give you an ethical killshot. My only other pro tip is that slug is heavy and you're gonna have some droppage close to 50yds. Factor that in, especially if you're in a tree stand.
To piggyback further, I grew up hunting with a beadsight slug gun and have only had 1 deer not drop and that one was double-lunged and made it about 25-30 yds in a couple bounds before he went down.
I'm in Minnesota and I've never hunted deer with anything other than my shotgun. I've learned a lot over the last 20 some years. 1. Get a slug barrel and shoot sabot slugs. If you don't have a slug barrel, DO NOT SHOOT SABOT SLUGS. The will just tumble. Rifled slug barrel, use sabot slugs, not rifled slugs. Non rifled slug barrel/bird barrel, use rifled slugs. 2. Different brands shoot very, very different through every barrel, so test out a few brands. I've found that Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs work the best with my 870/rifled slug barrel. I tried the Hornady slugs and at 50 yards, I couldn't even hit the 2' x 2' sheet of plywood that the paper plate was stapled to. That's not saying that Hornady slugs are bad, it's just saying that they don't agree with my particular barrel. 3. Slugs are a kind of like hand grenades. If you can consistently hit a paper plate at 50 yards, you can consider yourself zeroed. 4. A 50-60 yard shot is usually nuts on as far as bullet drop. Anything beyond that, and you've got some serious guessing on your hold-off. 5. Get a Limb Saver or other recoil reducer. Even with the recoil pad, shooting slugs will fuck up your shoulder. Only shoot as much as you have to.
I took the kid out duck hunting on Sunday. When teal are riding a 25 mph tail wind, they're damn near impossible to drop. It took a box of shells worth of trial and error before finally figuring out the proper lead. We ended up with a mixed bad of mallards, woodies, and teal.
I'm pretty sure today was the first day of filming for the new season, I'm really hoping they caught that.
Got a nice doe tonight. Had 3 come out and waited until I almost couldn't see before pulling the trigger. First time I've ever had to track one of my own. Doing that shit by yourself is not fun.
So my younger brother showed a trail cam pic yesterday of a whitetail that would probably go 225 inches. His pic from his cam on a farm near our home place. only he has permission to hunt or. Fucker wont even send me the pic as he doesn't want word to get out and some dumbass would poach it or something. Legit biggest deer I've ever seen not counting shit you see on tv etc.
Tracking a wounded deer in snow is a million times easier than in the grass. Doing it alone, in the dark, with no snow sounds like no fun. How far did she run? That looks like a good shot, so I'm guessing not far.
Imagine the thickest woods you have ever seen and walk through that for three hours. There hadn't been a frost so you couldn't see up in the air for the handful of times you even heard a bird jump.
My 15 year old is going hunting with my dad in the morning, while I’m taking taking my 9 year old on his first hunt. They are all asleep while I get drunk af by the fire. Life is good
Going on my first “hunt” tomorrow. It’s a private hunting club with stocked pheasants and quail. I’m really excited. Plan on getting into hunting on the regular.
Shot my first pheasant today. It got popped twice, so a little torn up. Thinking about deboning it and making some poppers with some teal. Does pheasant need a marinade? Never eaten or cooked it before.
Usually do the duck in teriyaki. Guess pheasant wont need that. Does it cook the same? I usually grill the bacon wrapped teal until the bacon is crispy, probably about 10min total. Will the pheasant need more time? Hoping the bacon will help keep it moist
Well someone else got the buck my brother was after. Thankfully it was someone who actually works hard and puts time in instead of some dick bag that would just shoot from the road. Grossed 234
Damn nice buck Hoss, you've a good food source area wise it appears. Surely will be another good one or three to be had in future hunts.
My family's farm is in Northeast Iowa so yeah, pretty much in the heart of Monster Buck territory. By far the biggest buck we've ever had on camera though.
Uncle took me skeet shooting to get me ready for birds later today. This is where all of my money will now go. So much damn fun.
That's awesome, have heard tell of Iowa's monsters, some coonass friends that would make the trek once a year for a week up near Granger Iowa.
If you don't mind my suggestion, practicing with a 20ga. Is alot "kinder" to the body than a 12ga. If you're blasting alot of clays especially.
Quail hunting with a dog is awesome. Today I decided that the first family dog will be either a pointer or retriever. RIP my wallet.
I wouldn't do the pheasant and duck together. They're two completely different meats. Pheasant is some of the finest wild game there is to eat. The only problem is that it is really easy to dry it out. Cooking it on the grill will almost guarantee that it ends up drier than an overcooked Thanksgiving turkey. For that reason, I usually skin the bird, stuff the chest cavity with half an onion and an orange, and then bake it in chicken stock. As for the teal, I typically pre-cook my bacon for a few minutes in the microwave until it's about half done. Then, I wrap the filets and finish them in the oven. 350 degrees for 15 minutes does the trick. If you want to take it to the next level, dice up some jalapenos, mix them with some cream cheese and a dash of liquid smoke. Butterfly the teal breasts and stuff the cream cheese/jalapeno mixture in the middle before wrapping them with bacon.
Grilled the pheasant breasts and they were perfect. Did the teal bacon wrapped with jalapeno and cream cheese. I use the raw bacon, and just cook the teal until the bacon is done. Doesnt take long over a hot grill and the teal turns out great.
