Here in Dallas we had a couple bad tornadoes a few years back right after Christmas... Little Rock had the same type of thing happen even further back. December tornadoes kill quite a few each year.
Birmingham checking in. Had SO MUCH FUN a couple Christmases ago at night in our crawlspace with like 8 people due to one of these bastards. Hope we escape tonight...i'd take 3 daytime 'naders over one night time one.
And the storms that produced all the damage are now gonna move through here. Hopefully nightfall will help keep a lid on them
Some of the more prominent tornadoes of the decade: https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/01/02/ten-most-memorable-extraordinary-tornado-events-s/ Just stumbled upon some drone footage of the ef3 I surveyed 28 June 2018. We never found the tractor during the survey:
Interesting, quick article about a plane that crashed after flying into a tornado. Scary as hell to imagine.
I was looking at this timeframe at work last night. Way too far out for much certainty, but the wind field/shear will be extremely favorable. Also, looks like a lot of precip/clouds around that could temper a larger threat. One to watch for sure
Nocturnal supercells in the woods. That is probably a hard nope from even the most seasoned of storm chasers.
yeah, fuck that - I don’t even like driving in east Texss at night when it’s clear, I can’t imagine what kind of fuckery that would be trying to drive around out there with supercells in the area
Well, they always do a forecast through day 8. It's very rare for them to delineate an area with a higher probability than climatology would suggest in Jan (that far out). Even for the deep South, which is the only real region in the us that can see appreciable severe weather in the cold season
Also, for any of you who are so inclined, pivotal weather now has a bunch of 6 hourly Euro model products including soundings (yay!): https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=ecmwf_full. You can animate with the top right button. To get a sounding, just click anywhere on the map or enter an airport code/metar site. Can also change the zoom and select a regional view
Feels like that’s a forgone conclusion at the very least for Saturday. Historically I’m skeptical about an outbreak in the severe risk area on Friday. Saturday has some comps like 2/5/2008 that give it legitimacy (fun fact: 2/5/08 was the first time I saw a tornado).
Tomorrow’s gonna be fun - luckily DFW is on the far western end of that enhanced risk area, so maybe we’ll get spared
