i don't think anyone cares, but i'm going to explain how weird the olympic climbing scoring was anyways. Spanish guy (Lopez) won. He got 1st in speed, 7th in boulder, 4th in lead and won with 28 points (1 x 7 x 4). But speed was head to head bracket format, so Lopez's fastest time was 6.42 and 4 guys got faster times than him (including silver medalist) but none against him head to head. He faced 2 of the slowest times because of false starts and a guy falling. Because of multiplication of scores, Ondra (the GOAT) went from 1st to 6th because another climber who ended with bronze got two extra moves moving him down 5 spots.
Can we pass China in golds? Figure we have really good shot at 2 in basketball. We are playing for gold in baseball, but I'd say that's 50/50 at best What T&F events are left we have a good shot at?
The color announcer yesterday was talking about a current (?) Chinese diver who uses money she wins to pay for healthcare for her sick mom. Guy from France had a great javelin and passed Moloney up. Warner till won by ~275.
pretty sure there is still some diving and table tennis stuff for China to grab gold in. I think the men blowing T&F like they did ruined any chance of USA catching China
Yeah I saw that. Mayer, he is actually the World Record holder for the whole event. Warner broke the Olympic Record which is fantastic
There’s some 2 diving and table tennis out there for China. We have a good shot at both basketball, women’s golf, and beach volleyball, but it won’t be enough.
Ondra in no way deserved a medal. He got a first round bye is speed and was the worst in bouldering. Would have been silly for him to medal. Great for Coleman, heartbreaking for Duffy. I think Colin believed he had to do the lead route as fast as possible to win the round and completely skipped the rest everyone else used. He looked so good near the top, had he rested he may have finished the route.
totally agreed on Ondra, it would have been just as weird if he won, he looked shaky the entire competition. Moreso just used him as an example to illustrate how weird the scoring was overall.
the scoring was too difficult for even me to understand in real time. They 100% should have had a running math total on the screen with changing places as the climbers moved up the lead wall.
the announcer definitely couldn't either. He kept saying that we won't know final scores until the end, but did a terrible job of building the drama by highlighting what individual climbers needed to do to medal / knock others off the podium. A friend of mine and I were tracking it on Google Sheets with a super quick table that we would update with hypothetical results on a moment's notice, so the Olympics could have had its shit together to share the possible outcomes in real-time. I have to imagine they tweak things for 2024. The head-to-head aspect of speed made no sense to me. the time trial is the most objective you can get in the olympics. Why not rank the fastest times 1-8, best of two or three attempts? Is that how they do comp speed climbing too?
Without a combined medal, does anyone actually care about speed? Maybe non climbers and gumbies think it's cool, but it's really not climbing. I feel the same way about modern bouldering, which thankfully wasn't as prevalent in the Olympics as it has been in recent WCs.
Here’s a crazy idea for climbing. How about they build something and the fastest person up that thing wins.
I wish all olympic sports had an interlude where a novice does the thing the Olympians are trying to do. Like put me, a V7 climber, on an olympic boulder and see how I cannot even pull onto the start of 3 out of 4 of them.
Just watched mens combined climbing final. The scoring was super easy to follow. Duffy kind of fucked Coleman in that 5/6 speed race. I also have no idea if they knew at that point who would be in it at the end.
So with this track cycling, how do they determine the order in which they ride the pace laps? Is it just a fight for position behind the pace bike?
so tomorrow sets up to possibly be the best olympic day in dutch history. Track Cycling Sprint and Womens Hockey should be golds and womens 1500m and the Womens Madison could well be gold. Dont think NL has ever won 4 golds on a single day
Why is that? What are the best cycling events so far iyo? I'd like to go back and watch some of them...
mens sprint is most fun to watch i think, although keirin is also good fun. Coming from the front means you cant see whats happening and you dont have any drag to profit from. As the rider up front you either need to go wall to wall and that will never happen but the wheel of the first guy going over the top of you is also taken so that means you basically need to go back to fourth or something and then get back to the front.
