My first half of my marathon was 2:03. I know exactly what is involved and I know how far away I am from a professional athlete.

Yeah I’m thinking about mile 7 or 8 those rib pains and shit are gonna start because they haven’t trained for the distance of it. That last 1/3 of the race they’re gonna be sucking major wind.

Then you’re not properly evaluating how much “burst” is involved in most professional athletes. Other than soccer players, I’d give a 2 hour half to a pretty small percentage of pro athletes without any special training.

my first half was like 2:30 and I was kinda fat and I did a run 4 minutes / walk 1 minute intervals for the entire half. It was awesome, I loved it.

Hey, guys, maybe there is some data out there we can review to answer this? Here's one I found:

    https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a26052496/nfl-players-run-miami-half-marathon/
"Led by Buster Skrine (5'9, 185lbs), a cornerback for the New York Jets, the players ran the half marathon distance to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of America’s New York and Atlanta chapters, according to the Miami Herald.
On Sunday, the players—some who had trained, others who did not—took off and completed the race. Skrine, who prepared for the half, led the group, finishing with a time of 1:59:58."

Sub-2 half marathon is damn hard for someone who doesn't train for it, imo. This isn't going out and running a 5k.

again he trained so it doesn’t apply to the question that was asked. Of course pro athlete with training could do it

It applies. The question was posed about Tebow, who if I recall correctly it not a 185 lb cornerback who trained for a half marathon. I think it provides evidence that NO, Tebow could not run a half marathon under 2 hours (without training for it).

the question was never could a professional athlete with training complete a half marathon in under 2 hours. It was could they without training. It started with Tebow moved on to other athletes in different sports. These guys trained so it doesn’t apply.

My one and only race was a half marathon in late 2018 with decent training at 1:58:07. Did a non-race 13.1 in 2:10:27 this March so with race adrenaline, definitely improved. Testing marathon distance in two weeks or so, I’ll report back.

    my slowest half: 2:28
    my fastest half: 1:34
    anyone else beat dat gap?

I want to one day run a 1:28 to get a 1 hour gap. But, I’d have to train, a lot, not sure if it’s in me.

My slowest half marathon race was the second half of my first full, right at 2 hours. I'm sure some of my training runs had 13.1 mile long sections that were slower.

nice. This probably won’t look like much, but at 37, I finally decided to try my first 5K. I’ve never been in good shape until this year (lost 75 pounds since November)
When I signed up a couple of months ago, my goal was 37:30.

    I did:
    11’51”
    11’54”
    11’50”
    10’21” (for 0.11 final portion)
    for a total of 36:52

again, I’m sure these numbers aren’t great. But this time last year. I couldn’t walk up the porch without getting winded. I hope to do more 5Ks and improve on this.

Great job Jeffrey Lebowski. You should be proud and I’m sure you are.
I had a similar epiphany last April. Started running and haven’t stopped. Last June, I turned 39 and vowed to complete a half marathon before i turned 40. Skip forward and I’ve run 2 half races, but also running about 30-35 miles a week and could crack off 13mi any time (i once thought running for 13mi without stopping was impossible). More so than the physical improvements (I’ve lost about 50lbs) the mental benefits have been life changing.

So I was so proud of myself the other day, finally got my 5k pace under 9:00 mile mark after some really hot days and an unseasonably cold day. I was really excited to get my pace back down after trying for a year and a half (COVID possibly and back issues took my 10k under 9:00 pace to 5k way over 10:00). Woke up Sunday with a head cold and it’s settling into my lungs the last few days, if this sets me back again I’m going to be very disappointed.

    Happy Running Day.

my little epiphany of the day while running this morning is that even your “worst” runs are still personal bests in that you added a new personal record of most miles run in your lifetime. Keep on truckin.

1st marathon distance on Saturday. Consider me excited.

Oh well, I flamed out after 10 miles. Some tightness in my left hamstring that has nagged lately and it’s getting just too fuckin hot here. When the overnight low is 80, I don’t know that I can ever comfortably regulate my temperature for hours. My water backpack thing filled 80% with ice and 20% water is warm water by the 6th mile.

I’m switching to a maintenance schedule and focusing on strength building (which I know nothing about) until late Fall. Fuck you, sun.

The only time I’ve bombed on a run was going out on a long run on a Saturday morning during marathon training. I think I was trying to run somewhere between 15-18 miles and it wasn’t my first time running the distance. I got out on the road about an hour later than I wanted to and absolutely bonked around 2 miles in. It was a rough 2 mile walk home.

Edit: my point is you can be in great shape and got fucked by the heat. Just get out there and try again.

Of the athletes to do it, it would be someone like a Tim Tebow. He's not really known for his speed over short distances. He seems more of an endurance type guy.

    A sub 2:00 half marathon is more than a 9:00 minute/mile pace.

Ran the Peachtree Road Race today, my first in person race since my injury Thanksgiving 2018.

This race is normally a giant party, but the fan support was just a shadow of its former self. Normally people hang out after to drink and have a good time, but this year everyone just went home after.

But hey, since I didn't stop to drink in the course I beat my goal of an hour by 4 minutes!

Fuck covid. Can't wait to run next year when it's back to normal.

Fucked up my back around May last year. Caused severe tenderness in my ankles that didn’t fully heal until recently, so I’ve been running intermittently.

Only started back regularly a couple weeks ago and am building back up some volume. But I’ve felt great this week (5x of 3miles) and the weather has been great. Slow, but I feel good.

    Glad to be back.

Much like people who are unvaccinated aren’t worried, soon those who are vaccinated will stop worrying about those who are unvaccinated. And while the unvaccinated struggle through variants, the vaccinated will go about their lives.

So, in that way, it will be abnormal. But 70-80% will be back IMO.
