He’s been in btc since like 2012. And aggressively into it shortly after that. So as long as you’ve disliked him for about 9 years, I suppose this could be accurate.

Or he’s just always been a rich dude who thinks he’s 100% correct on all things nba, and given his history, probably isn’t far off from that.

I’d be surprised if he had final decision making authority over that. Neither of us will ever know nor know whether he was even pushing that trade.

He’s literally worth hundreds of millions of dollars due to his nba opinions though, so cherry-picking a trade is uhhhhh an interesting way to try to discredit that.

I knew that you decided liking crypto was a good replacement for having a personality. Did not know someone else liking crypto would get you ready to mount your steed for them in regards to anything. He's a loooong way off from 100% correct on the NBA. He'd probably be the first to tell you that

  6. user15000

    user15000 Well-Known Member

The crypto has nothing to do with it. He made hundreds of millions gambling. He was betting 6 figures+ on volume of 2000+ bets per season and hitting at 55%+. I know far more about that industry than I’d guess most everyone on this board given my past experience, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know how he made his money. He’s been rich, smart, self-assured and a bit of an ass for as long as I’ve listened to him, which is well before I knew he was doing much of anything in crypto. People acting like he changed post-crypto is hilarious.

He plainly had to stop posting more on his Twitter about nba once he became more involved with the Mavs. And he consulted with them pre-2018. So if you were surprised he wasn’t giving away his nba opinions for free any more and was telling you to buy something that’s up about 100x since he posted to buy it around $600, then it’s probably because you don’t understand his nba history. He’s posted way more about the nba this year; that’s not a coincidence.

I also don’t agree with him on btc, eth, or nfts, soooooo.

the worst part of the Haralabob pods are how often Bill says "we've always thought" or "We've always been fans of..." to try and act like him and Haralabob are equal in hoops knowledge

I listened to the pod Bob did with Pablo Torre, which told the story of his time with Dallas. It was interesting but it seems like he thinks he was fired for not being good at workplace politics when it seems more like he's just a pain in the ass to be around

Also claimed to have made "hundreds of millions" on NBA betting

    Thought this math was interesting.

You say he’s hitting 55% and has made hundreds of millions (and sounds like he claimed it too).

At 55% using -110 odds he makes 500 for every 10,000 he bets. So basically a 5% return on his investment. To have made 100M, the minimum pre tax amount to satisfy that claim, that would require 2B in total gambling volume.

Let’s say he has a system and bets 50% of games based on that, that’s 1,200 games a season (2,000 games a year is 85% of games. Just seems unrealistic especially when no one can actually say what his system was.) That would require 100k bets on every game in the system for 16 years to satisfy that. That’s a million dollars exposure daily. Ok, not totally out of the realm of possibility even if pretty incredible.

But then you get to the part where you have to ask does he have investors which would dilute his ownership of the profits. First off, he didn’t build a bank roll to lay 150M a year in bets, based on the above, by himself. To make any of the above work he had to have investors for at least 5-7 years minimum. No way he had enough capital to withstand any kind of margin call from a book on that kind of volume. Much less a second one after two bad runs in a row. Unless he had backing. So now we’re at maybe he grossed 100M, but didn’t make it for himself, unless all the volumes were even higher.

Second, no book or collection of books is going to let one individual have that much action over the years. 150M+ per year?? Especially if they are winning at 55%. I know syndicates this that and the other, but at that volume I’m not sure you can hide that much money ESPECIALLY if you are betting 50-80% of NBA games. The action would be so obvious on a daily basis.

So all that to get to 100M on the nose basically over a 15-20 year period roughly. Pre tax.

In the last 40 years the S&P 500 has averaged gains of 10.9%. He could’ve taken 15M of his dads money and put it in significantly less risky assets with significantly better tax advantages and come out ahead of the greatest gambling career in history.

But my all means, take him at his word.

he mentioned using "beards" and doing business with shady bookies (i guessed mafia but who knows) because no one would take his action. he also said at one point 1/3 of his bankroll was stolen

i'm not making a judgment on the story one way or the other but that does seem like a lot of fucking money from betting on basketball. his caveat was it's not that much when you do it for 18 years.

iirc there was some old espn story where it was claimed his win rate was closer to 70%

You must’ve missed the 55%+ number. It’s not unusual for pro bettors to hit closer to 60%. Nor is it unusual to get below -110 on foreign books. You also fail to realize that there are tons of bets per game that don’t require him to bet 85% of all games (quarters, halfs, games, totals, sides, etc.). It’s also pretty standard that he would be betting more money and winning at a higher clip for bets that he liked more. So your math is entirely off.

And of course he has a whole system of people betting for him. Lol at thinking he was just lining up all of these bets at Bookmaker or Betonline by himself. If you had any understanding of big time pro gambling, you’d know he is betting most of his money offscreen with as many people as humanly possible to get money down. I know multiple pro bettors with a similar setup. Did I miss the point where he inherited $15m from his dad or that his dad has that kind of money? Or are you just making that up?

He’s said for years that his goal was to be worth $1b and that he’ll basically have that once btc hits $100k. So ya I kinda don’t think the guy who flies private everywhere, sits court side at tons of nba games for thousands of dollars per game, rents expensive ass yachts for weeks at a time, etc. might be worth approximately what he says he’s worth.

I thought his point was that Luka and KP require players with certain defensive attributes that they didn't have. Add Seth Curry and it becomes even more of a problem

On Simmons’ pod he mentioned he couldn’t even convince Dallas that Caruso was an NBA player, let alone someone they should look to sign.

He did say he was a fan of Josh Richardson even though he hasn’t worked out for Dallas.

I liked that he constantly pushed back on Bill being critical of certain moves, saying over and over how hard team building is. I think Bill legitimately thinks it’s an easy job, that he’d have no problem doing, based on how he talks.
