Its appeal is in its simplicity in explaining the misery of human existence. Strong man good, things are black and white, good and bad, right and wrong, friend and enemy. A lot of people really really struggle with uncertainty and shades of gray. It's a lot easier to pretend strong man has answers and if you could just get rid of the enemy things would be fine or go back to a normal that never actually existed.
A lot of the same mental processes that make people susceptible to fascism are the same thought processes in conspiracy thought. It's all related to a feeling of control or a refusal to believe that sometimes shit just happens and it's bad and there's not really one person or group to blame.
