"Let's spend all this fucking money on making this sick in-house caliber and then let's completely fucking ruin it with this text!"
Is there any reason to buy from a reputable second hand shop (Crown and Caliber) vs grey market (Jomashop)?
Factory warranty is overrated imo insofar as if you’re buying a brand new high end watch, it really shouldn’t have any defects necessitating repair within the warranty timeframe. If god forbid it does need repair as long as it’s a common movement (ie Rolex 3135) any decent watchmaker should be able to do a more than adequate job. I don’t know if gray market retailers like Joma necessarily use decent watchmakers, but my guess is they generally do. The primary issue I have with the lack of warranty is forfeiting the ability to have the watch serviced by the manufacturer and also the depreciation on resale. The depreciation can be pretty significant, so keep that in mind if you think it won’t be a lifelong piece.
Agreed. Warranties, depending on the brand, are 2-8 years anyways. Majority of higher end watches won’t be giving you any issues within that timeframe and will hold a considerable amount of value
Do they generally transfer with secondary market sales? I didn't realize that was a thing. So you can't even pay to have it serviced?
No, they won't touch the watch if it doesn't have original warranty card that matches the serials on your watch or if it contains any non-factory parts.
Keeping box with papers is always important when purchasing a watch with factory warranty. Some of those boxes are damn nice too.
It's gorgeous. Not even the hipster douches at Hodinkee could ruin it. Btw I fucking love my El Primero. I am "quarantining" at the Jersey shore to gtfo out of Brooklyn and when I left 2.5 weeks ago, I thought I was only going to be here for a week or so. Very happy I brought it with me because it brings me joy looking at it.
Just an opinion but I have a feeling we’re about to see a flood of pre-owned watches on the market soon. Some people are gonna need cash and some collections will be halved.
Incoming old man hot take: If your income is such that you’re receiving government assistance, and if your finances are such that a three to six month loss of income forces you to sell off assets, your money could have been better spent than on luxury watches
But I’m just hopeful that our country learns a lesson from this about being overly leveraged and inadequately capitalized.
Resellers are going to be low-balling the fuck out of people and hanging on to the watches until the market rebounds
I live in Atlanta, home of the $40,000 millionaire. Gonna be a lot of forfeited BMW leases ‘round here.
Tampa fits this bill as well but just like what happened in 08 once things bounce back these people will always exist
Lots of people view things like watches as cash equivalents to be used as quick liquidity. The upcoming few months will be a buyers’ market.
Has anyone had a good experience with pre owned watches? My OCD will inevitably keep me disappointed with any nicks and scratches.
I've been driving a 2005 Infiniti G35 since 2009. We are staying afloat. Pawns are down which means people still have their refund checks.
Post pics of your collections. Mine currently: Panerai Radiomir 1940 IWC Portofino Breitling Superocean Tag Chrono Movado Chrono Bulova Casio Gshock
I'm not digging through cabinets for some of the other Citizens, fashion watches, or beaters that I have, but here's the current rotation and a box I put in storage about a year ago. I also have an Explorer 214270, PAM164, and a second Heuer 01 (titanium) on loan to family.
Second Citizen lower left, I bought a similar one at a pawn shop a couple years ago that's my mostly every day watch now. Perpetual Sapphire WR 200? Only cost me like $125 IIRC and I think it retailed $400+. Any opinions on how I did?
Yeah, I like that, it has almost a gunmetal finish to it. Very slick. I bought the two-tone version, too but like this one much better. It's a great watch. I think you're right on retail, I paid somewhere around $400 back in maybe 2012 or 2013.
Back on the Citizens, the one on the far left, the Nighthawk, I saw in a magazine and really loved on a nato strap. Still one of my favorite watches when on the tan nato. Really a great looking watch. Doesn't wear as busy as it looks.
Mine is a stainless steel version. I feel like it was a pretty awesome find. I know these radio controlled eco drives have an absurd amount of features that I don't care to utilize. It's fun changing the time zones though and watching it reset itself. Hardly ever take it off except in formal settings where I like my leather band Shinolas a bit more. I don't take it easy on this thing, I'll wear it working on the yard or jogging/working out. Just keeps on chugging ...
i assume not many, especially right-handed ones like me. can't explain why, but my first ever watch (as Fossil around 6th grade) immediately went on my right hand. never looked back
Fred Savage is anti douche and no amount of douche could overpower him. Great great video. Would love to chill with Fred Savage.
Love the tank, and that Tudor reminds me a bit of the new Breitling Top Time, which I really like. Classic look. The strap on that Nomos with the minimal face is dreamy.
I’ve gone down a rabbit hole and watched 3-4 hours of watch collection videos on You Tube. I now want to buy ALL THE WATCHES.
