anyone have experience/recomendations for road bike rentals along the California Coast? Preferably around San Fran and Napa as that is where we will have the most idle time.

    Whelp.

Ironman bike course got cut short and that was really the only part I was good at.

Finished under 10 hours so I'll take it.

Now on to cycling focus for next summer.

I snapped the hanger off my MTN bike sending the derailer into the wheel....I snapped the chain on my 1x gravel bike. Then today I found a dent in the top tube of my alloy bike.

knee surgery scheduled for the 23rd, hopefully be back putting in light duty on the trainer in the first couple weeks of January.

very anxious to be back in the saddle, this last 30 days has blown without riding

also, what is everyone's opinion on best indoor trainer? Going to set up my Orbea on it so I don't have to worry about ease of transitioning on and off, more worried about getting one that give the best options for performance and performance tracking and keeps the ride feel real af.

Leaning towards Kickr unless someone can convince me otherwise.

This is what I have. Tough to beat that. Riding around on Zwift feels pretty damn real to the road (Although some may prefer to turn the difficulty up a bit. Default is 50, and they say 100 most closely mimics actually riding on the road).

The Tacx Neo might technically be the "best" trainer, but I can't imagine a reason anybody would have to have that over the KICKR.

I would totally consider racing if my wife worked full time and my work wasn't so physically demanding. I couldn't take that big of a constant risk for injury though being self employed.

What kind of races are you thinking about?

You didn't seem to want to go full road bike and lycra, so crit and road racing might not be your thing. Cyclocross racing is more laid back though (and probably more fun too). You should look into that for sure.

Yeah I don't. I kinda want whatever would be the equivalent of a marathon type. Like a 50-100 mile ride where just finishing would be an accomplishment and I wouldn't have to worry about cars for 4-5 hours.

Sounds more like an organized gran fondo is what you might be thinking of as opposed to racing. And there are more than plenty of those in cali you punk. Sign up and ride one.

This might be the most "famous" Gran Fondo in the US (it starts in Santa Rosa):

    https://www.levisgranfondo.com/info/faq

But I'd just search "Gran Fondo California." Or maybe your city + "Ride Calendar" to find some other organized rides.

There are also unsanctioned races, which are timed and competitive, but you don't have to have a USA Cycling license. Here is an example of a fun unsanctioned dirt road race in Michigan:

Cheers for crit/RR. Most fun I have. Beats the heck out of trialthon/running races.

I need to start posting my trainer rides to strava. I've used Zwift when it was beta but I tend to prefer trainer road. I'be read that zwift has made a lot of improvements so I'll check it out again.

Zwift is addicting as fuck. I've felt like shit all week because I haven't been taking rest days like I should (and because I've been doing my structured workouts and then doing other intense efforts on top of them). I'm on week 9 of an 11 week workout program though, and I think I've ridden like 1200 miles in the ~2 months I've had it, which actually outpaces what I rode outside this year.

I need to get zwift. I'll be changing careers at the end of Jan, which means putting in work for the new job. Zwift may be my best bet for a regular ride for ~3 months

Yeah I'm in the north, so I basically didn't ride at all during the cold months last year. I had a normal "dumb" trainer, and was lucky to get on it for like an hour once or twice a week. Then put in maybe 2500 miles over the summer. With Zwift I'm averaging more miles per week than I did all summer, and with my trainer (Wahoo KICKR) it feels damn realistic.

Plus I never had a power meter before, so getting power from my trainer and having all the built in workouts based on power targets, and then seeing real performance increases, makes me want to just keep going.

for those of you that don't visit the wives/girlfriends thread, I will repost here

set my road bike up on an indoor trainer to get some workouts in seeing as it is pretty much dark when I get hkme from work. that brought about this gem from my wife.

wife - how do you keep the front wheel from moving?

me - i have it on the wheel block

wife - but won't it still want to move?

me - only if I am really trying and violently turn the handlebars, but there is no need to do that as I am not trying to turn a corner while on a trainer

wife - no, why isn't it moving forward?

me - the back wheel is on a roller, providing resistance and making it stationary

wife - I am not talking about the back wheel, won't the front wheel still try to spin

me - did you take physics in high school

wife - what is that, is it a math class? you know I am not good at math.

me - I am going to chalk this one up to the brain injury you recently had, let's go ahead and change subjects so you can stop digging

20 slow miles in the snow with studs and the winter wheels on the cross bike. Skipped the bar crawl group ride my buddy put together because that seemed like a terrible idea.

On another note, stole this image from tarckbike... as someone who rides in the city, I find it somewhat amusing (provided the prius driver was alright)

oh, and might as well get an 11. they'll run 10 speed chain just fine and are (marginally) lighter and stiffer than the older generation. Plus 10 sp is getting harder to find.
