Looks like JFK for me cause the LGA flights have hardly any seats left unless I want to land at like 11 at night, then drive to Peekskill and go to work the next morning.

NY bros. I come to you for advice

I am currently in talks with my company about moving to NYC for work. I'll be moving there with my fiance/wife and our dog (a whippet).

I will be doing work for one of the airports in NYC, but will spend most of my time working out of a new office my company is opening for this project located at approximately 28th & 5th Ave.

My questions for you all are as follows:
    - Moving from KC this will obviously be quite the adjustment. Cost of living is higher and we haven't discussed salary negotiations yet. Are any of you from a more midwestern part of the country, and if so, how big is the different in cost of living (so I have a ball park to use when entering into negotiations)?
    - My fiance and I both have cars. I don't know yet if she will be able to keep her job at her current employer and work remotely (works for an insurance agency). Is there a reason for us to keep both cars, or any at all? Obviously insurance premiums have to be cray compared to KC.
    - Which areas within Manhattan/Brooklyn/Queens/etc. Should we be looking to live? Haven't seriously looked at the Jersey side, but if you have advice there it would be welcome. With the dog I'd ideally like to live near a park/possibly have a yard (more brooklyn). But obviously this isn't a super high priority.
    - I've just set a random monthly rent to $2000 when looking around on Apartments.com/Craigslist/etc. We currently pay approximately $1250/mo for a 2BR/2BA apt. Obviously this will not be available in most areas for $2000. Is this a good number to start with?

Thanks for the time gents. Any advice/tips are greatly appreciated.

Oh, and do I like the Islanders or Rangers? No Hockey in KC so I'm a free agent.

Starting rent should be closer to $2500 and with that you will get a 1br. 2br and you really need to be thinking $3500.

Just something to keep in mind, most places want first and last month rent as well as an agents fee which is typically 12% annual rent. Do the math and you need $7k+ just to move in somewhere.

As far as salary negotiations, obviously depends on what your current salary is but 30% is a good number to start at.

If you have a dog and really want a backyard/park, I'd probably be more focused on Brooklyn/prospect park

That's good to know. I've found some decent places for less than $2500 in Brooklyn. And 2 BR isn't required by any means. We aren't looking for anything immaculate, I think we'd rather have more space with less high end finishes/accents, if that makes sense. And also I've seen listing that say things like no brokers/no brokers fees. Is this similar to the agent fees? Would be tight to not have to pay someone money for essentially finding me a place when I can do it on my own (thanks internet!)

Do you guys know any people who have dogs in Manhattan, and if so what do they do about going on walks/taking them out to go to the bathroom?

If you want to live near your office in Manhattan, I don't even think you could get a studio for $2000 a month. Id be surprised if you could find a decent one bedroom under $3000/mo.

No, you don't need a car.

I just moved into a new apartment. I'd probably expect between 7k and 10k as a cost to move in. Typically Brokers have access to the good apartments, but there are some decent no-fee options.

There are dog parks everywhere. My dog does just fine between Stuyvesant, Tompkins, and Madison Square dog parks (all Manhattan). Occasionally take him off leash in Central Park on the weekends. We have a dog walker come twice a day at about $15 a walk.

Upon doing more searching with an increased budget of $2500/mo, I found a couple apartments that were nice, but they said that they came furnished. Any idea why a number of places I've found say they're furnished?

My husband (KJROD20) and I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. You can get a nice sized 1BR for ~$2500 a month, ours is about 700sqft (I don't know if that's nice sized to you coming from KC, but we came from a tiny, more expensive apartment in the East Village - so to us it was enormous).

We kept his car and sold mine when we moved to the city, but we both have family and friends in the surrounding suburbs so it was important to us to be able to drive out to them. It depends on how often you'd want to use it to determine if you'll need it or not. I wouldn't live in Manhattan with a car again but where we live it's easy, just have to move it three times a week for alternate side parking. Typically we can find a spot across the street or around the corner.

And Rangers. Easily. The Islanders don't even play in a real hockey arena, you can't see part of the ice from like half of the seats.

Manhattan Just Quietly Decriminalized Public Drinking, And That's a Good Thing

It’s summer. You’re hot. You’re thirsty. You surreptitiously crack open a Miller High Life tall boy in Central Park—right in front of a cop. Don’t worry. Thanks to new borough-wide policy, you probably won’t get arrested. Cheers!

Welcome to Gizmodo’s Happy Hour. Substance abuse for nerds.

Today, Manhattan’s district attorney announced that the borough won’t arrest people for public consumption of alcohol unless it poses a threat to safety. New Yorkers who drink in public on the island might get a summons and be ordered to pay a fine, but what this announcement really sounds like is that you’re more likely to get a warning than anything else. (Apparently the city also said the same thing about public urination, which I suppose makes sense—what goes in has to come out.)

Decriminalizing public drinking is a huge step forward in a city like New York. When it comes to enjoying an adult beverage outside the confines of a specially licensed facility, the US is puritanical to a fault. Only a handful of cities allow public drinking, and many of those are in special “entertainment zones” like the Las Vegas Strip, where—to be honest—it’s not that fun to drink in public at all. Great cities around the world allow residents and visitors to freely imbibe at parks and on beaches. And they’re better places for it.

It does seem like many US cities are finding more ways to allow responsibly drinking adults to enjoy a few cocktails outside of the traditional bar and restaurant environment. Just look at the explosion of family-friendly beer gardens modeled after the pubs of Europe, where kids are encouraged to tag along with their parents as they down a pint or two. Chilling out about public drinking might actually allow parents to hang in a park with their kids while enjoying some wine. It seems particularly cruel to not allow consumption of booze in a public space in Manhattan, a place where most people don’t have backyards.

It’s also smarter for cities to employ these kinds of policies that allow police officers to go after the perpetrators of violent crime instead of the regular people who commit these low-level offenses. NYPD seems to be particularly fond of ticketing public drinkers, writing 124,498 summonses in 2011 for drinking in public, more than any other offense. That’s a lot of people who probably just had a beer in their hands, or were possiblysipping it from the skull of a fake baby. Now NYPD can focus those efforts elsewhere.

The next step, of course, is decriminalizing weed. As The Observer notes, Brooklyn’s district attorney made a similar statement about marijuana in 2014; the borough won’t arrest people for smoking or possession. So should you feel the urge to toke some ganj al fresco, just jump on the L.

Hate to be "that guy" but not much changed with this

NYPD just won't throw you in jail anymore but it's still a summons which totally fucking blows. pretty sure it's a 50 dollar fine too. And if you don't go to your summons, you'll get a warrant and then get arrested on that in the future

That being said I have been drinking in Central Park openly since I've moved to NYC

Right. My hope for this is that is shifts the priority for the officers on duty. Most people drink at places like Sheep Meadow but this might remove the random jackass cop from passing out tickets.

Yeah the hardo police officers will cool down thankfully

Hopefully the city starts warming to the idea of wet zones in certain situations that aren't block parties. Open container cases are why most people get arrested on dumb shit, along with mta related stuff, like taking up two seats
