Almost never go to the site. Still liking most of the pods though. The guy he brought on the most recent podcast with Joe House was great. Lombardi?
Never listened to Simmons' podcast before he left ESPN. Wasn't a big podcast guy then. Glad to know Lombardi is back though.
Liked how candid he was talking about players. Didnt really try to sugarcoat anything. Especially talking about Josh Norman and Tavon Austin contracts
The problem is Lombardi was already a Belichick guy before. You now add that BB saved him after the Browns disaster along with Simmons' annoying as hell Pats fandom that brings every convo back to them, and I have a bad feeling about where that's going to go moving forward.
Agree. It almost feels like Simmons is playing a game to see how often he can force Boston sports into whatever they're talking about. The discussion that went away from that were great though.
I don't get why a pats fan talking about the pats annoys people so much. I'd say he talks plenty about other teams.
You know what youre getting into with him. If you hate it so much, stop listening. Sometimes Im interested enough in the topics, I'll keep listening, sometimes I get fed up with it and I cut the pod short. But yeah, if it bothers someone that much, just stop listening
I like to read the description of the pod and guess which non-Pats topic he can link to the Pats. It's a fun game.
He normally has the NFL line pod out by now. #firstworldproblems but having everything come out on the same day makes it hard to listen to everything I want before it's no longer topical.
I think they pushed it back to taping this morning because he got so much negative feedback on the audience show from a few weeks ago. It was pretty late in the day Wednesday last week. I liked it better Monday too.
He tried to rationalize that losing Adrian Petersen wont matter because their running game wasnt good anyway.
at you thinking Simmons ever watched a single Jose Fernandez start in his life. If a baseball player isn't on the Red Sox or on his League of Douchebags team, he doesn't know the guy exists.
I mean, the Vikings just beat the Panthers at Panthers while running for less than 60 total yards and less than 3ypc. After 1 week, Lombardi doesn't seem to far off.
I guess Simmons is not the one I think of for takes on the passing of a golfing legend and Fernandez. Yeah Fernandez was in the NL so he doesn't exist.
That show was just awful. Couldn't make it through to the end on that episode when he talked about the levels of Game of Thrones fans.
On the other hand I've been reading more Ringer articles lately than ever before haven't watched an ep since the first few episodes, the segments were always awful and the interviews were good but they'd have been just as good as podcasts Simmons just comes off super weird/awkward on camera and I'm a fan of his in general
He just hasnt recaptured any of the mojo from Grantland. I think Ive read 1 Ringer article. Really just listen to Keepin it 1600 and the baseball pod whenever Lindbergh is on.
Many of his writers are not that good, imo. Especially when it comes to actual sports. ya had to know the show would suck when he had his "writer's pod" and it was god awful. Those dudes were not funny. I didn't mind some of the interviews, but the show was just stupid.
I watched the Al Michaels/Bob Costas episode and the open with the rapper was bad. I enjoyed him talking sports with Al and Bob but it is a podcast and not a TV show. I'm surprised HBO bailed this quickly. Must have been expensive to produce.
I just was thinking yesterday I can't remember the last time I read or watched anything Simmons related. I used to read everything. The Espn platform is huge
Ringer articles are hit or miss with no real rhyme or reason. I used to really enjoy the TV reviews and stuff on Grantland but the Ringer stuff is obvious HBO shill. For example, Jason Concepcion's "Ask the Maester" took a huge turn after moving to The Ringer. The "After the Thrones" shit was awful too. You lose all ability to provide insightful commentary on a show when you're tasked with promoting it rather than analyizing it. They couldn't ever say anything even slightly negative about the show and were instead pumping us full of "IT WILL BE EXCITING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!" I've also found that a lot of Ringer articles are written like essays I would write in Sixth Grade: This year is the Year of the Quarterback. I will tell you why this is the Year of the Quarterback. Tom Brady is playing well and he is a quarterback. Matt Ryan is playing well and he is a quarterback. Other players are not quarterbacks, but they are injured. That is why this is the Year of the Quarterback.
team mostly just read the features/profiles, not having Lowe the only NBA content I read sometimes are the Shootarounds which I always enjoyed on Grantland
My take: Simmons worked as "The Sports Guy" until Boston Sports got good again then became insufferable. He rode the high of the Pats and Sox championships of the early '00s, and turned a corner with the Celtics '08 championship and it was all downhill from there. I think Grantland debuted shortly thereafter.
I liked the content of the show, in particular the ones with Cuban and Chris Bosh, but the format was god awful. A live audience might have made it feel more authentic IMO.
Watched episode 1 - Affleck started bitching about deflategate, I hit stop, delete and remove from season pass. And that was that.
I just don't find anything close to the content from Grantland on the Ringer. to me the Ringer is way too much superficial pop culture bullshit. no substance. nobody took the place of great writers like Lowe, Barnwell, Keri and Phillips.
