From what I understand she said that. But I think it was in the context of bringing "punk" and pop together, as opposed to her claiming to have discovered "punk".
I think it's funny that anyone would believe she has anything close to punk in her sound. It's laughable

OK first off, I haven't been on Facebook.
Secondly, read just some of the bullshit she says about "punk" in here and then tell me that isn't something she would say
    https://www.theinterns.net/2017/06/15/00s-rock-chick-according-avril-lavigne/

Edit: I am not having any luck finding the direct quote, but she's a *bonk* poser that isn't "punk" in the slightest

Then stop posting Facebook quality memes. Also, punk fucking sucks, so I don’t care if Avril says she’s the greatest punk artist of all time.

Bad Religion, The Exploited,The Offspring and even Rancid are favorites of mine.
It has always been interesting to me at just how influential punk has been to the metal scene. There are VERY few metal bands who were not influenced by punk. Going as far back as early Motorhead, Slayer, all the way through to Fenriz and Darkthrone (as well as newer-ish bands like 200 stab Wounds and practically ALL Hardcore).

yeah man. many, many good metal bands are punk influenced.

the cookie cutter metalcore bands of the early 2000s left a bad taste people’s mouths and made them forget about what you’re describing.

It’s strange to me that someone who likes metal and heavy music doesn’t appreciate some punk.

I grew up on Fat but lots of that hasn’t stuck with me. Lagwagons entire catalog still bangs. Propagandhi grew way beyond that early sound. Their late catalog goes hard.

Ugh... I hate downloading new black metal releases. You have to skim through 25-30 albums to find a decent sounding band, then you look them up on Metal Archives to find their record label is named "Purity Through Fire". I know nothing about this record label but the name screams sketchy. Why does BM have to attract so many of these types. Why can't you just casually shit on Christianity like a good death metal band would? I am so high right now.

I think that what happens is when you are from a certain region, and you are in a band that makes music that is uh, NOT mainstream there is a finite number of people that will be a part of that same scene and SOME of these people are Nazis. And because of the (justified) scrutiny sometimes bands get unfairly accused of having ties to far right ideologies.
For example, I live in Southern West Virginia. (I know, I know). My brother plays guitar in a band that plays thrash and what can best be described as "caveman death metal" (and I'm being nice). My brother is a progressive Bernie-lover and he LOVES progressive metal. (He's a progressive kind of guy). But the drummer and base player are coal miners and are fully immersed in the cult of Trump. The bass player especially says some questionable shit. Two years ago we all got drunk and started to argue about politics and I tried to fight him. (I was drunk). He wouldn't fight me because he was drunk and because my two German Shepherds were circling around us just HOPING that clown would make a move on me (he was right not to, the dogs would have fucked him up.....but I am 100% positive I would have beat his ass anyway so....).
Anyway, what I mean to say is sometimes when you are in an underground band, you have to take what you can get. Not only with your band but with other bands, producers and record labels in your specific area. Pretty sure that's what happened to Mgla.

Sure, there’s some difficulty finding politically similar people in a small community, but you gotta draw the line somewhere, and that line should never allow nazis.

Oh I agree. And it's also better to play it safe when supporting such bands. If the bass player in my brother's band turns out to be a white supremacist, not only would he get kicked out, but I'm certain my brother would never play another note for that band.
He would do everything in his power to distance himself from that, and I feel like that is the correct move for metal in general.

Also I'm extra careful about bands from Eastern Europe and the Pacific Northwest. I try to do my due diligence in research before the band's get my $ on Bandcamp.

the unfortunate reality of Eastern European (Poland, Ukraine) and to a certain extent Nordic (especially Finnish) black metal is that, as mentioned, the scenes are small and inherently attracts people with extreme viewpoints.

when you couple that with the history of anti-Semitism and extreme politics in the region, you end up getting a whole scene of sketchy bands, some of which will undoubtably make excellent music (see: Drudkh).

even if a band is “clean” you typically don’t have to go far to find a split or tour they did with an NSBM band.

Havukruunu is a good example of a band, who by all accounts, is clean. but, they play black metal in Finland. if they filtered out all the shows they were offered with sketch bands or labels they could release albums, i doubt we would have ever heard of them because they wouldn’t have played live or put out any music

i would not classify Mgla in that category, however much it pains me. those guys knowingly associate with known fascist dickbag, Mikko Aspa. they release albums on his Northern Silence label, and even play as live musicians in his NSBM band Clandestine Blaze.

I honestly didn't know about the whole "Clandestine Blaze" thing. I thought it was all about their releasing on that Nazis label, and I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt thinking that maybe they were just taking what they could get.
Super depressing because I loved Mgla.

Mgla and Drudkh were the hardest pills to swallow.

i had both patches on my vest and owned several shirts and vinyls. patches and shirts went in the trash, can’t be walking around supporting them.

I’ll still stream occasionally, but not without guilt. Won’t ever patronize or buy anything from either band. Fuck em.

Season of Mist was doing a bunch of special releases by Drudkh to support them since they are Ukrainian (and very nationalist to boot). still can’t abide by that shit tho, who knows what your dollars are supporting after they get them.

    i donated to unicef instead.

Catalog is varied. Beyond Hypothermia and Until Your Heart Stops is pioneering metalcore. I love UYHS. They then transition into a spacey post rock/post hardcore thing that turned off many fans at the time, myself included. I returned to it years later and got into it. Jupiter is great. Antenna is OK. Perfect Pitch Black starts their mix of the two eras. This single is very promising.

guitar/singer Stephen Brodsky has been in so many projects. Early Converge, Old Man Gloom, Mutoid Man
