Just because a jacket weighs more doesn't mean it will be warmer. The filling in those jackets is rated pretty high and is intended to be very warm while also very light
You're on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, right? That jacket will be more than fine for 98% of the cold weather days in Mississippi. For the remaining 2%, just suck it up for the 5 minutes you're going from your car to home/gym/bar/Waffle House. Synthetic down works really well despite its light weight, and your body heat increases the warmth of the jacket as you move around wearing it. That jacket was my primary jacket in and around Denver when I lived there, and since moving to Alabama I don't recall ever needing anything more. Obviously, if you plan to use it for a 5 day hike, yeah you may want something different. But for simply going around town, it should do the trick and also do a good job (not perfect) of stopping wind. Hell, you could probably get away with using it as a ski jacket for spring skiing. On the other hand, people in lower Alabama and lower Mississippi freak out over cold weather, so maybe you should consider something like Canada Goose.
People in the south don't know how to deal with cold weather and can't stand to be uncomfortable for even 2 minutes. It's the damndest thing.
I wear my Patagonia Down Sweater in the winter in NYC. I’ll wear it with only a T-shirt to some pretty low temperatures. I only break out my Canada Goose when it’s below freezing, really windy, and/or precipitating.
I'm from the south and have lived elsewhere... that's debatable. And everyone dressing the same does not equate to "better"
I think in the north it's more like idk man just get a fucking coat and don't overthink it because it's cold as shit out here.
I don't want to be cold at all, even for like a second. Football game Saturday is gonna be high in 50s low in 30s and I'm doing tshirt, sweatshirt, coat and stocking cap
It really depends on the wind. 50 and sunny with no wind? That's God's weather. That's like jeans + sweater or long sleeve shirt and you're good. 20+ mph cold wind and overcast and that's miserable. That's jacket + long sleeves underneath.
Pretty sure 90-95% of North Face and Patagonia’s stock is earmarked for southeastern colleges. They pair perfectly with the ties/button down/shorts ensemble at 80-degree September football games.
Sweet, sweet Uggs. Drop some cedar sachets into those during the day when you're at work and they'll stay puffy and dry. I know I wear my Ascots daily so there isn't much opportunity for rotation days off. I've had mine for 2 years now and only replaced the insoles once. How are those ear buds?
Need to get cedar satchels. I just replaced the insoles in my ascots so I need to maintain both pairs. The buds are unreal so far. What you would expect from higher end Sennheiser stuff.
The south cold weather clothing discussion really hits home. My birthday is a month after Christmas, so lady tegg always buys me winter clothing for gifts. I have enough sweaters and coats to live in Antarctica and never repeat. I bought her a Canada Goose jacket to sell her on us going to the winter classic last year, so I guess I’m as much to blame.
Also in the market for an underwear overhaul. Been giving some serious thought to the plethora of options Duluth Trading provides. If anyone has some insight I'd appreciate it. My Flint & Tinders (which I've had a dozen or so pair of for several years now) are starting to show their age. They are on sale on Huckberry @ 3 for $69 if anyone is interested. If I can't pull the trigger on a new brand I'd be more than OK buying F&Ts again. They are comfortable and built to last... in America.
Basically all I wear now. Can’t imagine there is anything more comfortable, but they don’t last very long. Think you get 20% off your first order and mobile20 should work once for 20% off or wait until Nordstrom has a sale.
Same here. They are great. I rotate like 7 pairs of TJ and 4 UA boxerjock. Helps half life. RU-Omega Potato the Duluth are basically ExOfficios. Good, not great. This all reminds me that I now need to drop coin on TJ and Bombas stuff.
this is my only complaint. I wear only TJ have prob 15 pairs. Just randomly they will get holes in random ass places. most comfortable wear I’ve ever had though. I rock the cool cottons mostly and some second skins.
I’m a fan of the armachillo bullpens I have a half dozen pairs and am gradually replacing my old ex officios with them
Anyone have a kitchen suggestion? My parent's range shit and I have been tasked with redoing the range-fridge-microwave. I always lean Whirlpool but am open if the newer brands are better.
For anyone looking, REI.com's outlet has an extra 25% off casual jackets and baselayers. For reference, a North Face Denali 2 Fleece is on sale for $100. Ends 11/11. https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/s/ou...tion:outlet-handpicked-categories&outlet=true
That's right bitches, 10 times the actual processing power I will use, but as a plus I paid out the ass for it.
i bought all ge when i redid my kitchen and have been pleased. the slate black is a good look depending on the rest of the kitchen whirlpool, kitchenaide, jenn-air, a few others are all the same company and make decent stuff i think all the brands are very similar until you get into the high end stuff. i will say that ge has great customer service though
GE finished second, went KitchenAide. Like you said WP owns all of them from Roper up to Viking. They are different classes though. I worked there one summer in the call center (hq is 20 minutes from me). I like the slate black a lot, but it would look odd, So, out with "biscuit" and in with stainless.
gloves are liners and they are great for 40-50 degrees on their own. shoes are UGG Romeo II slippers.
Look into Hestra. They make a bunch of styles. Really good high quality stuff. They also have sizes, not just S/M/L which is nice. Also..
I already have jackets for moderate temps. The whole point is to get a jacket for when it is cold as fuck outside. Call me whatever , but that thing is not thick or heavy enough to wear when it's 30 degrees and the wind is blowing and you have to be outside for extended periods of time. I sent it back. I've been researching further and this list has some good jackets on it. I'm trying to stay at $300 max. https://www.switchbacktravel.com/best-winter-jackets I'm considering the REI Stormhinge 850 and the Mountain Equipment Lightline
Anyone have a recommendation for a jacket good enough to wear for temps as low as the high teens plus wind? TWC says it got down to 31 last night, which was fine initially in my cheap Columbia fleece. But the wind started blowing, and I thought my fat ass was going to get hypothermia walking from an Uber to my office. I need cheap though because I hope to wear it for only one winter. I’ve gained a bunch of weight, unfortunately, and I plan on losing it plus more before the next winter. TIA.
How incapable are y’all at buying jackets? Go to a sporting goods store and spend $100 on a north face or something
